19. Drums Beating

Yuxing Tianrui silently took a step back, “Woman, what do you want?” Du Chuxuan looked especially dubious today, even though she didn’t wear strange perfume or makeup or clothes, not in a look poised to seduce a man. Yuxing Tianrui still smelled a rat by intuition.

“Hahaha, don’t be ridiculous, Your Highness! I just want you to go bed early since you’ve been tired these days. Tomorrow, you’ll have to lead the training. Mistakes will be made across the whole army if you couldn’t sleep well.”

Du Chuxuan raised his eyebrows and diligently helped Yuxing Tianrui get changed. Recently, Yuxing Tianrui had finally stopped saying strange things to him. Yet, it was still painful for him to help Yuxing Tianrui change clothes every day.

Du Chuxuan beamed with joy while talking and once again tied the strap of Yuxing Tianrui’s inner clothes into a tight knot. Luckily, he was in a good mood and patiently cut off the mess bit by bit.

Until lying in bed, Yuxing Tianrui still believed there was something fishy going on. However, he finally couldn’t resist the soothing incense prepared by Du Chuxuan and quickly fell into sleep.

After he fell asleep, Du Chuxuan became more excited that he couldn’t sleep. He lay in bed, touching here and there, and should forget to pass the words for General Leng.

Annoyed, waving his hand like driving away a mosquito, Du Chuxuan decided to deal with this troublesome thing tomorrow. It would be all the same. Obviously the reason why general had turned to him was because the general himself wasn’t able to pull it off, so he needn’t to worry about it either.

Du Chuxuan didn’t know that his random guess was right. General Leng hadn’t succeeded in talking Yuxing Tianrui into launching a battle after several attempts.

Du Chuxuan’s suspicious behavior lasted until the next morning when Yuxing Tianrui left the tent. The intimate guard of Yuxing Tianrui finally couldn’t help muttering, “Your Highness. I think it’s unlikely that the Turks don’t have a follow-up plan.

If they managed to contact one general, there can’t be merely one spies. Now that their chess piece of the Dragon General is destroyed, it’s possible that General Leng is another chess piece.”

He meant nothing more than reminding Yuxing Tianrui to pay attention to Du Chuxuan’s action. The guard, as a real intimate guard of Yuxing Tianrui, slept outside the tent at night and was clear of the situation inside.

As the saying went, something must be wrong when things were usual. The Crown Princess had always ignored His Highness before but now changed so dramatically after meeting with General Leng. It was indeed suspicious.

Yuxing Tianrui glanced back at the tent, “She can’t be.” He didn’t know why but he just said so. Although his reason urged him to observe Du Chuxuan, because all businessmen bent over profit, there was a voice in his mind telling him that it could be anyone but Du Chuxuan.

His being trapped in the tangled mood had nothing to do with Du Chuxuan, who had spent a lot of time holding friendly talks with the young guard at the door.

They were now, in his view, at least close if not bosom friends. Anyway, two foodies easily became close without the boost of emotion by words, as long as there was delicious food. Somehow, such a relationship was firmer and more direct than the loyalty to one’s country.

“Your Highness, Your Highness. The training in the field has started. Do you think I should go and fetch it now?” The entire barracks weren’t large, so the sound from the training field could be heard here in the tent.

The noise made the young guard more excited than Du Chuxuan, who struggled to fight back his joy and put on a face of for-the-sake-of-you, “Look at you. It’s just a wild hare. Don’t behave like you don’t have food to eat every day. Alright, alright, fetch it now.”

“Yes, Your Highness. I’m going right now.” The words weren’t finished and the young guard already ran away far. After he left, Du Chuxuan’s lips curled up high, making him look like a fool.

A delicious toasted hare worth a thousand taels of gold. That was really a truth. Having dined and wined, Du Chuxuan satisfactorily lay on the couch, exclaiming what a heavenly life this was and how he wished to keep it on forever.

“Your Highness. There seems to be a situation. All the generals went to the main tent for a meeting.” The guard was called Dongxiang, young but knowing many people.

Du Chuxuan had never liked such things. He was about to say something, when he heard rapid sound of drums from outside and sat up at once.

He hadn’t learned any skills, but after staying in the barracks for so many days, he would be a fool if he didn’t know what the beating drums meant.

Immediately, Dongxiang’s eyes widened and he looked at Du Chuxuan in disbelief, “Your Highness, it’s war drums! It’s war drums!” He nervously looked out, wondering whether it was the enemies fighting all the way here or His Highness launching a battle to the Turks’ barracks.

Of course it was war drums! I know that! Du Chuxuan cursed to himself, totally forgetting that it was two days ago that he had worn a dumbfounded face on hearing the drums and it was Dongxiang who had explained to him.

Just as he was lost in thinking, a soldier hurriedly ran in, kneeling on the ground to greet the two people, no, just Du Chuxuan at the door.

“Your Highness. His Highness orders you as an intimate guard to go with the army. Please be prepared soon and do not make any delay.”

Finishing the words, he presented with both hands a yellow battle flag. Needless to say, this thing was no different from an imperial edict at a glance.

If he dared to refuse to accept it, he would be killed a million times in the name of a war crime.

Damn it. He cursed inwardly. Yuxing Tianrui really wasn’t a good man. Luckily, he was a man too. If it had been her sister, she would have been crying in fear, not to mention whether she was able to take the order.

At this moment, he entirely didn’t remember how courageous he had been to save the damned man, cursing his way back into the tent to put on his armor.

Before setting off, he took out the two cotton pads in his chest while no one noticed. The things were too hot. It was nice not to wear them for at least a while.
