49. I’ll Never Let You Down

Translator: Flying Lines

The next day, the group of five hit the road again after breakfast.

It took them about a month to finally arrive at City Hao, a city at the border of State Yanhui neighboring a small and weak country, State Xi, which, sandwiched between two large countries State Yanhui and State Yanling, had luckily stood in peace for all these years.

The purpose of Xiao ShengNian’s trip was simple, to bring back a person, the Assistant Minister of Revenue, who had committed treason. Xiao ShengNian got the news that he had escaped to State Xi. Therefore, he came upon the emperor’s verbal decree.

Both Su Jie and Zhou ZaiYue were a bit speechless after learning about Xiao’s task upon entering City Hao.

They had been travelling on a rather leisure speed for over a month, during which the assistant minister must have long got the news and escaped again.

Xiao ShengNian cracked a smile as he said in a casual tone, “The emperor of State Xi has captured him at the very beginning and has been waiting for the envoy of our country to get the outlaw.”

“Why would His Majesty assign the task to you?” A prince was clearly of too much importance for such a trivial task.

“Father must have his plan.” Xiao ShengNian said with an unfathomable look, smile in his clear eyes.

Su Jie pursed his lips and didn’t buy his nonsense. Yet after a while, Xiao ShengNian pulled him into his arms and whispered by his ear, “Truth is I find life in the mansion a bit boring and want to travel around. Father gave his consent and let me handle this in passing.” As he spoke in a melodious baritone, the hot breath of his blew into Su Jie’s ear.

All the officials of City Hao who came to greet the Prince Rui happened to see all this as Su Jie’s corner of mouth twitched at his crap.

Zhou ZaiYue, books in his hand, remained calm and composed as if not seeing anything.

Zhui Xing and Yu Che both wore a poker face.

Only Xiao ShengNian was beaming, and flirting with Su Jie in broad daylight, under the eyes of so many.

Su Jie wasn’t a bit affected either. He was even more straightforward, put his arms around Xiao ShengNian’s neck and pressed a hard kiss on the prince’s lips, making a clear sound audible to all. Since Prince Rui himself wanted to make a public display of their “affection”, he’d love to cooperate.

“Your Highness…” His voice wasn’t the enchanting type. Instead, it was quite clear but only a bit deliberately protracted which added a touch of special charm of a young boy. His eyes now looked bright and clear, which Xiao ShengNian found so captivating that he couldn’t even avert his eyes away from the boy.

He had been used to disguise all these years, and today he was trying to leave an impression of a dissolute prince who disregarded his manners and made a public display of his affection for his male concubine.

Yet he didn’t expect Su Jie to respond, which sort of rendered him in a trance.

This was the first time he observed another man’s eyes in such a short distance.

Under the bright sunlight, the boy before him was beaming, his eyes enchantingly clear. And in those intoxicating eyes was his own reflection. Xiao ShengNian felt his heart melting at the moment. Suddenly, he had this idea of sharing a lifetime with the boy before him.

Clearly, he fell for the boy.

Sometimes love comes in the most unexpected manner. It could happen just for anything, either some words or just a simple move.

In this case, Xiao ShengNian probably fell for the bright eyes that shone right through his heart.

“Wen NianXuan,” Xiao ShengNian spoke in a rather low voice, tenderness coloring his tone. Under the eyes of all present, he promised with sincerity, “I’ll never let you down.”
