48. Sharing the Bed

Zhou ZaiYue had planned to take Su Jie out of Prince Rui’s mansion, but Su Jie still had Death Gu Poison in his body. Before the poison was rooted out, Su Jie must pretend that he knew nothing about his past, continued to be loyal to Prince Qin and complete the tasks that Guqin Master had given him, that was to stay in Prince Rui’s Mansion, during which Zhou ZaiYue would also stay.

When Zhou ZaiYue returned to his room, Su Jie was reading a book, sometimes frowning, sometimes giving a nod of understanding, clearly absorbed in the book.

See this scene, Zhou ZaiYue gave a satisfied nod of his head before saying: “If you find anything hard to understand, I’d be more than glad to explain for you.”

The two then had some discussion over the content of the book, but was interrupted by a knock at the door. It was the dinner Xiao ShengNian had ordered.

When the waiter left, Zhou ZaiYue refused to sit at the same table with Su Jie, claiming a servant was not qualified to join his master for a meal.

Su Jie, a bit helpless, put down the book he was holding and looked a bit serious. Staring right into Zhou ZaiYue’s eyes, he said in a sincere and solemn tone of voice, “Elder Zhou, without you, I might die in one of the missions or be tortured to death by the Gu poison someday in the future. I’ve never considered myself a noble person. I’d be the Man of Sacrifice of Prince Qin the whole life if you didn’t come to me and tell me about my origin. Maybe one day I myself could figure out the truth about my parents, but the only thing I can do would be to confront the Guqin Master head on. Yet with the Death Gu Poison, he could kill me any second. So…” He paused all of a sudden, cracking a bright smile before continuing, “So, Elder Zhou, you changed the course of my life. If someday I can be the noble person you claimed, then I think you are the only person I am deeply indebted to.”

His eyes were clear and bright as he said those, which touched Zhou ZaiYue to such extent that he exclaimed with excitement on his face, “Someday, I believe you’ll outperform your father.”

Su Jie smiled, a bit shy for being so highly praised. Then the two continued their dinner in silence, leaving only the slight sound of chewing food.

After dinner, the two took a short rest before Zhou ZaiYue tutored Su Jie for some doubts in the book he was reading. Then it was time to turn in.

“ShengNian said he’ll be waiting you in his room.” Zhou ZaiYue said after closing the book.

Su Jie nodded before saying with a smile, “Then I’ll take my leave, please have an early rest.”

Zhou ZaiYue saw Su Jie to the door and said, “I’ll try my level best to find the herb to root out the Death Gu Poison and make the antidote as soon as possible.”

Su Jie expressed his gratitude then walked to Xiao ShengNian’s door and knocked on the door, walking straight in without waiting for Xiao ShengNian’s permission.

Xiao ShengNian couldn’t help but sigh, “My little slave, you’re getting increasing disrespectful.”

Su Jie said in a casual tone as he closed the door, “Yes, Your Highness, I’ll show my sincere respect to you in the future and will obey every word of yours.”

“If you can really do that, I’d be over the moon.”

Su Jie felt he and Prince Rui were getting along in a quite subtle way. They could make some small jokes with each other, which Zhou ZaiYue may have played a part, but mostly it was because Xiao ShengNian had been kind and tolerant toward him.

“Now get some sleep, we’ll be travelling the whole day tomorrow.” Being a bit obsessively clean, Xiao ShengNian had no plan to make out with Su Jie or it would get messy. And the inn was not a place for the bath and changing after that.

After they were both on bed, Su Jie had thought Xiao ShengNian would do something as this was the very first time Zhou ZhaiYue had consented to let them two sleep together. He waited and waited, and there came Xiao ShengNian’s steady breathing.

He…just fell asleep like that?

Su Jie pursed his lips and glanced at Xiao ShengNian.

The dim light fell on his face, blurring his contour. Su Yan stared at his face for quite a while and finally realized Xiao ShengNian was indeed asleep. He moved closer to him, put his hand around his waist and closed his eyes.

A silent and tranquil night began.
