33 – Winter and Slaves

When Morse revealed himself as a vampire, one question came to mind before anything else.

“Why didn’t you show your true colors when we first met?”

If it were a vampire that could not die even if its heart was stabbed, all it had to do was ignore the skeleton’s attack and subdue us.

I think I could have won even if I didn’t have the Ogre Gauntlet that can fight against the undead like now.

I never thought he was a stupid person who couldn’t judge such a winnable situation.

Because he was a clever person.

“That’s because I wasn’t a vampire back then. If I had had the power back then, this chase wouldn’t have lasted as long.”

“You’re talking as if you recently became a vampire.”

“That’s the correct answer.”

Mors grinned while stroking his pointed fangs with his index finger.

Has Morse recently become a vampire? If so, who turned him into a vampire?

“Are you a clan?”

“Aren’t we supposed to be friendly and exchange questions and answers?”

I picked up a bone rolling on the ground. The bones destroyed by Morse were sharply broken.

The Skeleton Orc Warrior’s weapons were all too heavy for my strength, so I couldn’t use them.

This is the best for now. Because the Morse in front of us will never let us go alive.

“Did you find the things you needed in the cabin?”

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the cabin.”

“Then is this what I currently have?”

“That is likely to be the case.”

“Even if we give you that item, you will never save us, right?”

“As I said, killing you without pain is the only mercy I can give you.”

I coldly observed the situation. Dorothy is bare-handed. There is now only one undead left that I can summon.

It couldn’t have been worse than this.

I looked at Dorothy. She was looking at me, keeping her silence. Her eyes were trembling.

Although she doesn’t show it, she probably knows that the current situation is very unfavorable.

The enemy is strong. It may be the strongest enemy I have faced so far.

Unlike a strong enemy, we are at a disadvantage. The weapon he mainly uses is broken, and there is only one minion he can use. The situation was more unfavorable than any battle we had faced so far.

The word defeat lingered in my head. No matter how much I think about it, I can’t think of a way to win.

I missed the broken bone. The fallen bones rolled on the floor.

For the first time in a long time, a feeling of helplessness and despair began to fill my heart.

And that stopped my thinking.

Is this the end? If I had been a little more careful, the situation wouldn’t have gotten to this point.

Even if we couldn’t see Morse, we should have thought that he would always be watching us.

I couldn’t deny the fact that I was excited after receiving the nickname White Bone Lord and gaining the powerful power to control the undead.

I mistakenly thought I was invincible by becoming a necromancer.

Did you think I was some kind of god?

I was arrogant. It was so arrogant.

Isn’t it no different from the arrogance of the orcs who were just defeated by us?

“This is ruined.”

I smiled self-deprecatingly. But now that things have come to this, I have to fulfill my responsibility.

“Dorothy. I have something to tell you now. Will you listen?”

“Yes.”

I took a deep breath. And I spoke to her with the brightest expression possible.

“Thank you for your hard work so far. I guess our journey ends here.”

Dorothy’s eyes widen. I saw her like that in my eyes.

This is probably the best I can do right now. I decided to let Dorothy run away.

“I told her that I would release her if I paid her full ransom. In fact, if you look at Dorothy’s actions, she has already paid more than that.”

I wasn’t used to saying goodbye. She felt even more so because she was not at all ready to break up with him.

The only responsibility I can bear here is to ensure that Dorothy escapes safely.

The two of us couldn’t think of a way to escape Morse. In that case, the one remaining person has no choice but to desperately get his attention.

I had to play that role. His target was me, and Dorothy was just the one caught up in this.

I spoke with a trembling voice.

“Starting today, you are now free.”

More than anything, she wanted to live. I didn’t want her smile to be erased from this world.

Isn’t it such a waste that this girl, who will become a beautiful young lady in the future, die?

I cherished Dorothy. She is a precious person who has filled the old woman’s vacancy for the past half year.

If she hadn’t been there, her journey alone would have been very lonely. Dorothy listened to me better than anyone else and smiled.

Without her, I would not have understood the nature of her soul. Because Dorothy blocked Morse’s path, I understood the sublimity of the soul.

“···.”

Without her, I wouldn’t have been able to come this far. Dorothy was my benefactor.

I said goodbye to save my benefactor. She became lonely because she thought she couldn’t see her face.

I slowly turned my gaze away from her. I said my goodbyes clearly. Now all that’s left is to desperately stop Mors.

However, a warm feeling grabbed my hand. My gaze naturally moved towards the direction where I felt warmth.

Then Dorothy’s refreshing, clear blue eyes came into her field of vision.

“Thank you.”

Dorothy’s clear voice embraced my ears.

The voice was as tingly as a bird chirping in the morning sunlight.

In the cold winter, her small hands were wrapped around mine.

Dorothy pulled my hand, folded over hers, towards her own chest as if it were very precious. She was smiling with an expression of great joy.

When she showed no signs of leaving, I once again said goodbye to her.

“I am free.”

“Thank you.”

I looked at her as she used awkward polite words to tickle her during the day.

I’m sure you understand what I’m saying… But Dorothy didn’t let go of my hand.

I looked at her lustfully at her not leaving her.

Dorothy’s eyes, which had been trembling just a moment ago, were looking straight at me.

She spoke to me with a smile like the sun. The sound that came out of her mouth was truly unexpected.

From noble mtl dot com

“Please make me a slave again.”

“Yes…?”

I looked at Dorothy with her dumbfounded expression. Then this time Dorothy tilted her head in an obscene manner.

“Why?”

“That’s why I told you to run away, Dorothy. I’ll take care of this place somehow…”

“I don’t like it. Is there a slave in this world who abandons his master?”

I don’t know why Dorothy is like this. If things continue like this, Dorothy and I will all die from Morse.

I thought it would be easy to say something about sacrificing oneself… I looked at Dorothy with a frustrated expression.

“If this continues, we’ll both die.”

“Even if that’s the case, this is where I belong.”

“Dorothy please…”

Then Dorothy’s smile disappeared. And for the first time, she frowned at me and frowned.

She began to protest, returning to her usual tone.

“I know how dangerous we are right now. And I also know how the master felt when he spoke.”

Dorothy slowly released my hand from her grasp.

“But the master told me to think and act for myself.”

Her voice grew louder. Her words continued incessantly, like a person complaining of injustice.

“I’m scared too. I don’t know how to defeat an enemy who won’t die even if I stab him in the neck…”

“···.”

“I’m scared and hate dying. But I hate dying with my master even more. What my master is telling me right now is that he’s going to die!”

For the first time, Dorothy was angry with me. She was so angry that she didn’t know why she was saying such things to herself.

“I want to be with my master. I want to help people within reach when I stretch out my hand… And see more.”

“Dorothy…”

“I don’t want to break up like this.”

Dorothy wiped her red eyes with the back of her hand, probably because her emotions were getting stronger.

“Please stay with me…”

Dorothy lowered her head and said no more.

Dorothy’s story is purely emotional. She has no solution or breakthrough and just says something like a foolish idiot that has nothing to do with solving the case.

But I don’t know why I feel so relieved.

Something hot in her chest rises up her neck, as if she had been wanting to hear this answer from the beginning.

“Yes, I will.”

I spoke out in a trembling voice. The sense of helplessness and despair that had struck me began to fade. The thought that had stopped started spinning once again.

He stroked the head of Dorothy, who was sobbing and lowering her head.

It is a very happy fact that there are people in this world who value me.

“I don’t know how the necromancer ended up using slaves instead of undead…”

Yes. Actually, I didn’t want to die. Is there anyone in the world who wants to die?

Most everything in this world may be a problem that can be solved unless the possibility is 0%.

More than anything, Dorothy says she wants to do it, so there’s no reason not to do it.

What I am trying to do here now is to choose for the best, not the best.

“Let’s win together.”

I decided to take down the pursuer who was chasing us.
