Chapter 38 - The smell of death

Lila must have been holding it back a lot because the next time he entered the room after taking a shower. She was tossing on his bed uncomfortably, her hand on her stomach. He saw this scene before when she was pregnant, but she already gave birth - but there is still pain.

He proceeded to turn the light off but paused. The light should stay on. There is no way he can get any sleep tonight when Lila looks so sick and pale.

When he approached the bed, he smelt something he didn't before. The smell of something rotting, the smell of a dead person on Lila. Kiryu bit his lip. It has to be a lie. Wasn't the child the problem? Why is she like this now?

It's not like he never knew of her illness. When her mother came back after so long, she sat him down and told her that she would help Lila. Since then, he pretended not to know what was wrong either. But Sumire-san kept repeating that she will do everything to help her.

The darkness will kill Lila.

The darkness that was inside Sumire-san, but she passed some of it onto Lila. The Queen of darkness is not supposed to have her power split in half, so they kill offsprings.

His mother told him this tale before to warn him, but he did not think it was possible back then. Sure Lila got sick a lot, and sure she was fragile at times. But she was perfectly healthy on other days.

"Kiryu?" Lila whispered.

He walked over to the bed and laid down beside her. Before he knew she was sick, Kiryu intended to sleep on the couch. As he said to her, he was trying to be a gentleman here. But forget that. Lila looked cold; she was shivering so badly.

Haruka will kill him if he finds out that he hugged Lila to sleep and slept on the same bed. But what could he do?

Looking at Lila right now made him feel sick. Is this how she gets when night falls? How come nobody else has noticed?

"I will be fine in the morning."

Kiryu shook his head. "This isn't normal, this—" Kiryu stopped talking when she laid her head on his ċhėst.

"Sorry, Kiryu, but I am freezing. Don't do anything weird or misunderstand, okay?"

"I already have a guilty conscience." This wasn't a lie; he felt guilty for kissing her. He felt terrible for having such crazy thoughts. No matter how much he loves Lila, she is married now. She is another man's wife. She does not belong to him.

That stuff did not matter now. She stank of death.

"Lila, what's wrong with you? Tell me."

Maybe he can do something to help her. He is no medical expert, but people did say he was smarter than most; some called him a genius. Maybe he can figure this out. Kiryu knew he was only trying to convince himself there. He is only slightly smarter than the average person. But he knew somebody that could help her.

Lila shook her head.

"Haruka. I will bring him here."

Haruka will know what to do. Kiryu knew this for sure because Haruka was with Lila this past year. This past year he saw Lila appear on so many programs and performed so many concerts. He kept whatever it was that was harming her at bay. But now that the two are apart?

"No," Lila said weakly. "Don't tell him, don't tell him."

"Hey wif-"

"It's me," Kiryu mumbled.

For a moment, he did not say a word. Kiryu knew he was thinking of the time and questioning why they were together alone at night.

"Lila, there is something wrong with-" Kiryu sentence fell short when the girl suddenly coughed. At first, he thought it was due to the cold draft in the room due, but then he saw it, small tricks of blood.

He switched the camera on.

He did not know how to explain this.

Haruka looked pale and frantic, but he nodded. "Alright, Kiryu, first calm down. She needs you to be calm."

"She--have you seen this before?" Kiryu wanted to make sure.

"I have, it happened a lot when we were in London."

Haruka seemed calm. Kiryu didn't know how he could stand this. How could he watch Lila like this?

"It isn't easy for me either, just so you know. Look, Kiryu, listen to my instructions, okay?"

Kiryu weakly nodded, and he listens to Haruka. Haruka didn't say anything specific; he simply gave methods to make Lila more comfortable. Roll her to this side several times, massage her stomach. Then finally, Kiryu said.

"Is this even working?"

"No, it's not a cure. I can't give her medicine since I'm not there. I will have to make some here and send it. But I need to find the right ingredients."

"Then what was the point of this?"

Why did he waste the last few minutes doing something that won't help?

"To get her relaxed. Alright, this is where your up."

Right as Haruka said that Lila coughs again, this time a larger pile of blood.

"She keeps losing blood." This isn't good for her. If she loses this much, she will die right away.

"That's where you come along sherlock. Knock yourself out and tell me when things finish."

Kiryu immediately understood what he meant. "Give her my blood?"

"Yeah, I used to do that. I would get large samples of your blood, don't ask me where and give it to her." Haruka trailed off. "Don't give me that weird look; obviously, I couldn't give her mine. Zane conducted strange experiments on all his subjects to make sure they are loyal. I don't know what he did to me, but I didn't want to risk it."

"My blood, I gave her some."

"That's not enough, make her drink from you directly."

"But Haruka-"

Haruka sighed. "Quit acting so modest right now. I know you're concerned for my feelings or whatever. But I don't want my wife to die."

Kiryu understood from the man's tone. He would rather let Lila drink from him than have something bad happen. Indeed it was the correct decision. But it still left him feeling weird.

"I'll call you after this." He turned to the girl who was limp in his arms and shook his head.. 'Forget it, save her first.'
