55. The Winner Takes All

If Du Chuxuan saw this scene, he would definitely applaud sarcastically because Yuxing Tianrui’s expression was so well designed as if those injured soldiers were his real brothers.

However, it could be seen that this helped gain more popularity for Yuxing Tianrui. After all, those who were enrolled in army mostly intended to achieve military merits and get rid of their hard life. However, they were different from the scholars who just sat in the room memorizing and writing and their life changed.

The soldiers suffered real wounds which, if the position shifted a little bit, would stop them from seeing the sun the next day. Therefore, given their humble origin, they were all very grateful to hear the commander say thank you at this time.

Yuxing Tianrui didn’t stay here for long. Although for this battle, Shenglan and the Turks drew a tie, the two sides were faced with different situations. The Turks’ casualty was lesser, and very likely they would make a comeback at any time. By then, the difficulty of defeating the enemy would be exponentially higher.

Shan Zhongli met the Mister in prison. Long before Shan Zhongli was thrown here, the Mister had been locked here for two days. Knowing that the solution they provided was a false one which led the death of so many fellow soldiers, the prison guards hated them.

Certainly, the guards didn’t beat them, but wouldn’t take more care of them. When he saw the soup like pig food, Shan Zhongli’s expression became hideous.

In his viewpoint, Yuxing Tianrui had stolen his solution, stood out and taken all the credit. Otherwise, he would have long returned to the barracks. Why did he choose to show up at this time?

The Mister was a weak scholar after all. He wasn’t as well-treated as Shan Zhongli. He didn’t even have anything to eat. All he got everyday was a bowl of water which barely kept him alive.

Seeing Shan Zhongli refused to touch the food, the Mister rushed over, stuffed all of it into his mouth at once and chewed greedily. This disgusted Shan Zhongli. However, he still managed to control his expression, “Mister, you’re still in the mood of eating.”

The rule that the winner takes all never changed. He didn’t believe that Yuxing Tianrui could be so kind to keep him alive after putting him in prison. Didn’t everyone understand why he had come here in the first place? He was afraid there was no place for him anymore if he was sent back to the capital with the disgrace.

As the idea occurred to him, a flash of malice crossed his eyes, “Now I have an idea. If it succeeds, Mister can also take the vent out.”

Du Chuxuan heard every word of their conversation outside the tent. For a time, he didn’t know whether he should cry or laugh. He just passed by here because he circumvented to avoid Yuxing Tianrui, and suddenly knew this was the tent where Shan Zhongli was imprisoned. Therefore, with interest, he walked over, getting this shocking information unexpectedly.

Dongxiang’s mouth dropped open, and eyes full of disbelief. He had never expected this son of Duke Ningyuan could be so vicious. In Dongxiang’s view, His Highness was already very kind and lenient not to sentence them to death immediately. How could a person be so unappreciative?

“Your Highness,” On the way back, Dongxiang glanced at Du Chuxuan from time to time and became a little indignant when he saw Du Chuxuan looked quite casual, “His Highness should have killed them right away.”

Du Chuxuan gave him a sideway glance, too lazy to say anything. Then, Dongxiang, frustrated, didn’t dare to say more.

Yuxing Tianrui, returning to the tent and not seeing Du Chuxuan, felt strange.

“Your Highness, shall we escort Shan Zhongli back to the capital in advance?” Ada bowed and asked. If they sent Shan Zhongli back now, the man wouldn’t face any accusation. At most, his ambition would come to an end, which, Ada understood, wasn’t His Highness’s intention.

Sitting in a chair, Yuxing Tianrui unconsciously took Du Chuxuan’s languid gesture, “Isn’t he just in prison for two days? I don’t think he is in a hurry to go back.”

Certainly Yuxing Tianrui could foretell the possible scheme as Ada did. When the news that Yuxing Tianrui was alive was sent to the capital and the Emperor didn’t force Shan Zhongli back, he could tell that at least in this matter, the Emperor’s intention was obvious.

He fiddled with the quilt and gave a small chuckle, “I heard that the Mister also arranged people around Ashina Yi? That could be a breakthrough.”

Ada understood the idea immediately and was about to ask for more details, when he heard familiar footsteps coming near. He at once stopped talking and retreated to the side.

“Your Highness comes back so early today.” Du Chuxuan knew he was back seeing so many guards standing at the tent and pushed open the curtain with a grin.

There wasn’t much expression on Yuxing Tianrui’s face, but his eyes were shouting that he wasn’t very happy now.

Du Chuxuan touched his head in embarrassment and smiled ingratiatingly, “In the past few days, Your Highness has been at the battlefield. I think you must be tired. I’ve already had your tent cleaned up, and if you want to take a rest—”

Before he finished the words, Yuxing Tianrui’s face turned sullen already. He squinted at Du Chuxuan to see whether he meant it or was merely playing hard-to-get. However, met with Du Chuxuan’s flawless expression, Yuxing Tianrui could only look away, frustrated.

Du Chuxuan shuddered momentarily, knowing his words must have annoyed his tsundere boy. But remembering what Shan Zhongli had said, Du Chuxuan had to be careful. To this end, he had to do this even if it made Yuxing Tianrui unhappy.

As expected, Yuxing Tianrui snorted at his suggestion and stood up from his seat. He wanted to say something to figure out why Du Chuxuan’s attitude changed all of a sudden, but thinking of his annoying words before he was pissed off, he threw his sleeve and left.

Ada was confused and followed in Yuxing Tianrui’s wake. Yet, he didn’t take it seriously, because in his view, this was the way how His and Her Highness get along. Soon or later, they would be good again.
