23. Saving Fox Larry

Translator: Ann Yi

“I said let’s go to the staff dormitory. I didn’t say anything wrong. Don’t look at me like that.”

Although he did not know Mirrocle very well, Frost believed that Mirrocle would not joke at such a critical moment.

Seeing Frost and Murk staring at him curiously, Mirrocle explained, “The staff in this mountain are not humans.”

Hearing that, Frost suddenly felt that the fresh air in the mountain was a little cold. He looked at the staff in the distance who looked like they were dedicated to their work, and the staff who had just reminded them of taking care of their pet; they were gentle as always.

“Then… what are they?” Frost could not see anything wrong and asked hesitantly.

Mirrocle patted Frost’s shoulder in comfort, “It’s nothing. They’re just fox fairies. You can treat them as ordinary staff.”

Weren’t they brave? To find a little fox in the lair of the fox fairies, that was easier said than done.

The little fox was now brought to a room full of torture instruments by the Man in Black. The thick smell of blood in the room scared Larry so much that his heart skipped a beat.

“Bu…buddy, aren’t we gonna get my soul out of this body? What are we doing here?” In his mind, Larry was cursing all the ancestors of the Astraea Foxclan. ‘All you talked about was purity, but your actions are so dirty!’

‘What you said was way too different from what you actually did! You even set up an execution ground privately!’

“When you’re dead, your soul will get out of the body automatically.” This time, the Man in Black finally answered him, but Larry was certain that though he sounded indifferent, he actually took pleasure in Larry’s misfortune!

After saying that, a silver light flashed in the Man in Black’s hand. Blood came out from Larry’s slashed wrist, and the pain caused Larry to twitch violently. His right hand drooped weakly. At the same time, the piercing pain stimulated Larry’s entire body.

The Man in Black was very quick, and he didn’t give Larry time to lick his wound. He raised his knife and Larry’s limbs were all broken.

“Ah! Ah! Ah!!! ! Damn you old fox! F*ck! You’ll go to hell!!” The sharp pain from his hands and feet made Larry want to die. He just wanted to get out of his body so the torture would be stopped.

Larry was the type of person who was brainless when everything was on track, but once something went wrong, he would be calmer than anyone else.

Even though he was in severe pain right now and he couldn’t control his trembling, his thoughts became clearer. Why did the Man in Black break his limbs instead of killing him?

The Patriarch had planned to kill him from the beginning. Since he wanted Larry dead, why didn’t he just kill Larry?

Thinking back to what had happened ever since he was taken to this illusionary valley, where everything peaceful on the surface seemed so hypocritical now, the only thing that could make the old fox change his mind was the jade slips and the strange magnetic forces between him and the jade slips.

Rather than calling it magnetic force, it was better to say that Larry and the jade slips were mutually attracted to each other. The jade slips were attracting Larry’s soul, and Larry’s soul was also summoning the jade slips.

Clenching his teeth, Larry curled up on the ground. Like dogs, foxes were also canine and they didn’t have sweat glands. Larry felt cold all over his body, and he didn’t even have the strength to move his fingers.

The Man in Black didn’t do anything to Larry after he broke Larry’s limbs. He just carried Larry with him and took him to a rugged place. Compared to the beautiful and fake scenic spot, this was what real mountains and forests looked like.

After throwing Larry there, the Man in Black disappeared. Larry thought that he would either die in the mountain due to bleeding too much, or due to starvation.

He didn’t expect that though he managed to survive with so much difficulty, he was still dying. He didn’t know if he would see Blacky and Whitey when he died this time. If he saw them again, he would certainly complain!

While Larry let his train of thoughts wander freely as he lay on the cold and hard ground, Frost, Mirrocle and Murk were getting closer and closer to the backland of Stardust Mountain.

“We’ve been here just now, right?”

“This is where we came from.”

“This is the mark I made. I have seen it three times.”

The two people and one cat who had been lost in the same place for half a day were both tired and hungry, and they didn’t care about how dirty the ground was. “We can’t go on like this. We didn’t bring any food with us. We’ll be doomed if we’re trapped here.”

Mirrocle drew a cross coordinate on the ground, marking the directions. “If it is just an ordinary means of camouflaging, it’ll be undisguised if we can tell the directions.”

But…

If it was a trick used by fox fairies, he might need to think of other ways.

Frost carefully looked at the the cross drawn by Mirrocle and thought that some methods in the magic world were actually quite scientific.

When one got lost and trapped in one place, scientifically speaking, there was a magnetic field disorder, which made people lose their sense of direction, so they kept coming back to the same spot in one place.

Frost wondered if it was useful to use a scientific method that involved longitude and latitude to deal with such an unscientific Stardust Mountain.

Obviously, it was useless.

When they walked back to the cross that Mirrocle drew on the ground again, Frost knew that this simple method was useless.

“Patriarch, there are mortals trying to enter our territory. Please give me instructions on how to deal with it.”

What Frost, Mirrocle and Murk didn’t notice was that in the deep mountains and forests, there were cameras everywhere on the branches.

The light from the screen shone brightly on the Patriarch’s solemn face, “Find out how they came here. If they were here by accident, send them out.”

“I followed them all the way. The one carrying a backpack looked like a magician. They came here by following a paper crane.”

“Get FVA Unit 01 here.”

When hearing that these people followed a paper crane, the Patriarch knew why they could come so near to his base and why they took a black cat with them.

He had never thought that Larry, the so-called “the wandering ghost” was so capable that he could occupy his apprentice’s body. And it didn’t take Larry a long time to charm those mortals who raised him to make them come and save Larry.

FVA Units, short for “Foxghost Vanguard of Astraea Units”, were currently the most advanced soldiers of the Astraea Foxclan under the Patriarch’s control. FVA Unit 01 was the Man in Black who fought in Frost’s house and kidnapped Larry here. He had been observing Larry outside Frost’s house for a long time. He came quickly and saw the image on the screen, then immediately reported, “The man wearing glasses is the one who has been feeding Larry recently. As for the man with the backpack, I’ve never seen him before. The black cat is also a pet kept by the man with glasses. The last time I saw him, I realized that he had been inspired and is only one step away from becoming a cat fairy.”

In the CCTV footage, Mirrocle took out all kinds of magic weapons from his bag, such as copper coins and wood swords. Those magic weapons were neither precious nor rare.

However, with these simple magic weapons, Mirrocle got closer and closer to the hidden barrier in the Stardust Mountain.

This barrier was used to isolate the Astraea Foxclan from the secular world. The previous leader of the Astraea Foxclan installed the barrier with the power of the set of jade slips. At first, the barrier was very powerful, so powerful that the Astraea Foxclan managed to escape a deadly calamity.

But now, the barrier got weaker and weaker. It was originally formidable enough to resist a world-scale calamity. Now it was so weak that occasionally people who went hiking at Stardust Mountain might get through it.
