20. Memories of His Hometown

Su Jie turned back and cracked a big smile, “I’m used to taking care of myself.”

Xiao ShengNian didn’t dwell on this matter. After washing up, they had breakfast together, the atmosphere between them somewhat subtle with traces of warmth and even sweetness but they just didn’t talk to each other! Not a word was uttered throughout the meal.

After breakfast, Xiao ShengNian ordered his guard Zhui Xing to prepare a horse for him. Probably worrying that Su Jie might provoke his brother again, he said to Zhui Zing before he left, “Zhui Xing, stay by Nianxuan’s side when I’m away. Don’t let him offend my brother again.”

Xiaonu was only used when they two were in private. When others were around, he preferred to call Su Jie ‘Nianxuan’.

Though surprised by the order, Zhui Xing didn’t raise any objection. He was a man of few words who would take whatever order or task given to him with respect and obedience, “Yes, Your Highness.”

Weirdly, Su Jie immediately understood what this was for. Though it looked like Prince Rui wanted Zhui Xing to keep an eye on him to prevent him from doing anything inappropriate, while in fact he aimed to protect him from his brother’s harm. Leaving Zhui Xing by his side meant his favor for him, a warning to others that he cared.

Su Jie was self-aware enough to know that by no means would Prince Rui be captivated by his charm and beauty in such a short time and changed his attitude completely. The only reason for this would be his jade pendant, which was probably why Xiao ShengNian had to leave for a few days.

Confusion began to accumulate in his heart as he tried to guess what was so special about that pendant. Before Prince Rin saved him and raised him to be his Men of Sacrifice, he lived in a remote village with picturesque scenery and kind folks. After all these years, the beautiful scene of his father teaching while his mother weaving under the morning sunlight was still vivid in his mind. He could even hear the clear sounds of kids reading by his ear. These beautiful memories had been inscribed in his heart.

However, he was too young a boy when disaster came that many of the details of the memories blurred over the years. He could remember and even feel the warmth of the memories but he couldn’t see his parents’ face clearly. All he could recall and feel was the warmth of that moment.

Su Jie had never expected the jade pendant to be anything special, which was why he was stunned the moment the saw the same pattern on Xiao ShengNian’s medicine case.

What was behind the jade pendant?

But then Su Jie mocked himself for that stupid thought. It was just a normal pendant. What made it special was his attachment to his parents and his hometown.

He had a vague memory that later on the village suffered a serious drought that dried the river and killed the crops. Then followed the famine that starved all villagers to death, including his parents. Only he alone was taken back by Prince Qin. Ever since then, he had buried everything about his hometown deep in his heart, which would only be stirred when he occasionally stared blankly at the jade pendant when he would think of the long-lost sunny days, his playmates and childhood.

Therefore, it perplexed him as to what story this jade pendant could have. His hometown was a remote and less-known village without any complicated story behind it.

Failing to figure out a clue, he decided to put it aside. Perhaps the pattern was just a coincidence.
