18. Being Touched

Translator: Flying Lines

The next day, Su Jie woke up early before daybreak, only to be stunned by the person lying by his side. It took him a while to come back from the shock and realize that it was Prince Rui.

Xiao ShengNian was in his sound sleep, his breathing steady, his eyelashes dark as ink and soft as feathers. His face now looked peaceful, only his eyebrows slightly knitted, seemingly to be bothered by something in his dream. Su Jie was moved when he saw him lying beside him in his outwear.

Su Jie had never expected Prince Rui to stay on watch. Why was Xiao ShengNian being so kind to him?

So this Prince Rui was kind-hearted and amicable just as rumored. He was thoughtful, noble and tolerant to all, no wonder he enjoyed such a good reputation, respected by many.

Suddenly, Prince Rui opened his eyes as Su Jie was staring fixedly at his face.

That pair of eyes, awoken just from sleep, were unfathomable like the boundless sea with extreme coldness and sharpness that would chill one to the bone. Even Su Jie who had been used to a life of swords and blood was frightened.

But that sharpness disappeared the next second, replaced by his usual gentleness. In his graceful and gentle manner, he arched his lips and cracked a smile, “Morning, Nianxuan.”

This was the first time that tenderness on his face looked real, probably because of his weakened guard from sleep. His usual smile and tenderness somehow always gave Su Jie a sense of aloofness and indifference.

“Morning.” Su Jie smiled heartily, his eyes narrowed into slit. Though Prince Qin was the first one he truly wanted to see upon waking up, he still liked Prince Rui’s smile, so refreshing and tender like the fresh air and soft breeze after rain. Even the atmosphere in the room turned warm.

He had been telling himself to stay strong for so long and there were times he truly wished for a shoulder to cry on and a pair of strong arms where he could have a short rest after facing all the storms and woe alone for being Prince Qin’s sword. He was after all a mortal man who couldn’t help but feel touched when being treated so gently by Prince Rui. His heart opened up a bit for Prince Rui when he dressed his wound with great caution and tenderness.

Pity that these stirs of his heart were so faint that even Su Jie himself didn’t notice.

“You feeling better?” Xiao ShengNian asked as he got up and put on his shoes.

“Much better.” Su Jie nodded. He didn’t ask who had poisoned him. Xiao ShengNian had found him the antidote just in time which meant he must know the poison very well. Plus that Xiao ShengNian didn’t even mention what had happened the night before, Su Jie knew he must know who was behind this and he had no plan to do him any justice.

After giving it some deeper thought, he speculated that Prince Xian was probably the culprit for all his suffering. As Prince Rui’s brother, Prince Xian had free access to every corner of the mansion, so poisoning the food was just a piece of cake for him. Plus that punch in his face and Xiao ShengNian’s attitude in this matter, the answer was almost manifest.

Still that was his speculation. He needed hard evidence to prove his suspicion.
