Chapter 67: Only One Wife

The moment Su Jiu entered the laundry wing, a woman who worked under Mrs. Qin knew trouble would come. Hidden by the dark of the night, the woman slipped out the laundry wing and ran to Lotus Pavilion to call for help.

Xie Ying came with a group of servant girls and nurses. She walked in haughtily, did not stop to pay her respects to Su Jiu, and looked around the laundry wing.

“What happened here?” she asked coldly.

Mrs. Qin immediately rushed over and knelt down by Xie Ying’s feet. “Second Young Mistress, you must defend me!” she sobbed loudly. “A new servant girl stole my food. I only beat her a few times, and Young Mistress punished me severely for it. She spilled an entire pot of hot porridge on me, and kicked out some of my teeth!”

She shrieked as she cried, looking quite innocent, almost as if she really were an unjustly bullied woman.

Xie Ying’s beautiful face looked quite stony. She lifted her head and looked towards Su Jiu. “Young Mistress, I understand that you are new in Ji Manor and wish to make a mighty reputation for yourself, but you shouldn’t put blame on innocent servants. Their statuses are low, and nobody would speak up for them even if you beat them to death. If you really are angry, then target me. Slap me a few times, and the entire Ji Manor will know that Young Mistress is not to be messed with!”

Su Jiu slowly turned around, and calmly looked at Xie Ying. “Slap you?”

Xie Ying leaned forward and moved her face closer.

“Young Mistress, don’t you want everybody to see how mighty you are?” she said with a smile. “Target me! Slap me, won’t you?”

Seeing that Su Jiu didn’t move, Xie Ying moved forward another step, looking quite confident that Su Jiu wouldn’t dare hit her.

“You don’t dare do it? Hit me!”

Bam!

The thunderous sound seemed to echo into the sky. The entire laundry wing shook.

Xie Ying flew out, turned over mid-air, and landed on the ground, kicking up a cloud of dirt and dust. The entire laundry wing gasped.

Su Jiu stepped forward a step and stood with her hands behind her back. She looked coldly at Xie Ying, who had been slapped silly.

“I’ve never hit a woman before. To fulfill your wish today, I broke that record!”

Xie Ying’s eyes rolled up, and she fainted.

The servants and nurses who came with her finally came to their senses and rushed over to her side.

They screamed and they cried, “Second Young Mistress, are you alright?”

“Second Young Mistress, wake up!”

Mrs. Qin, terrified, screamed, “Somebody come help! Young Mistress beat Second Young Mistress to death!”

The servants in the laundry wing, fearing that they would become involved, began fleeing every which way.

“Young Mistress beat Second Young Mistress to death!”

The entire laundry wing descended into chaos, except for the little servant girl who was beaten by Mrs. Qin. She shakily stood behind Su Jiu, afraid, but with no intention of running away to hide.

Mrs. Fan was worried as well and hurried away to find the manor physician.

Su Jiu and Chang Huan stood calmly. Chang Huan crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Chief, don’t tell me you really beat her to death!”

“Of course not,” Su Jiu replied calmly.

“That’s good!” Nanny exhaled a sigh of relief.

“I just slapped her unconscious!”

Nanny was speechless.

“My Heavens! Why would you do such a thing?” Nanny asked anxiously.

Su Jiu innocently shrugged. “How was I supposed to know that she’s so delicate, and would faint after only one slap?”

“What are we to do?” Nanny felt a twinge of regret. A few articles of clothing caused so much trouble! At the time, she should’ve stopped Su Jiu from coming to the laundry wing.

“What do you mean? You don’t suppose Ji Yuxian will kick me out of Ji Manor, do you?” Su Jiu asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I’m not certain. I heard Eldest Young Master really dotes on Second Young Mistress. Miss, before Eldest Young Master hears it from anyone else, rush over to apologize to him. No matter what, you are his newly-wed wife. I don’t think he’ll be too harsh,” Nanny said.

Su Jiu wrinkled her brow. She looked at the lanterns in the corridor and sunk into deep thought. After quite some time, she finally nodded her head.

“Alright, I’ll go look for Ji Yuxian!”

“Chief, I’ll go with you! If he becomes angry, I’ll just say that I was the one who slapped Xie Ying,” Chang Huan said.

“No need. You and Nanny go back. Protect Nanny. I’ll go by myself.” And with that, Su Jiu quickly walked towards Ji Yuxian’s courtyard.

Ji Manor was quite large, so the news of what had happened in the laundry wing had not yet spread to the main courtyard. Cloud Pavilion was as quiet as ever.

Even if Su Jiu, the Young Mistress of Ji Manor, wished to enter Cloud Pavilion, she had to announce her arrival first.

Su Jiu waited at the door of Cloud Pavilion. After a few minutes, Chief Housekeeper Yu walked out and respectfully said, “Young Mistress, Eldest Young Master has invited you inside.”

Su Jiu nodded her head and followed Chief Housekeeper Yu.

At the moment, Ji Yuxian was dining in the dining room. Twenty dishes were arranged on the large rosewood dining table, along with four soups, and six plates of pastries.

Ji Yuxian was wearing a silvery-white robe with faint branch-patterns embroidered on the sleeves. The material of the robe reflected the warm candlelight. Ju Yuxian looked quite dashing and noble in this attire.

He ate slowly, with six servant girls standing behind him and two standing beside him. One servant girl served soup, while the other was busy picking bones off fish and serving Ji Yuxian the cleaned fish pieces.

These servant girls were all varying degrees of beautiful. Some were adorable and innocent-looking, some looked proper and dignified, and some possessed a charming, devilish beauty. All had pretty, well-proportioned figures, and moved about elegantly.

“My wife, you’re here!” Ji Yuxian’s lips curved into a smile when he saw that Su Jiu had saught him out without him summoning her.

Su Jiu’s face remained expressionless. She stepped forward a step and said, “I slapped your wife.”

She spoke with a hint of guilt, but also with confidence, as if she had done nothing wrong.

The piece of sea cucumber Ji Yuxian picked up with his chopsticks suddenly dropped onto his plate. The entire dining room plunged into silence.

The elegant servant girls looked up at Su Jiu in unison, all shocked.

Ji Yuxian slowly looked up and gazed at her silently.

Su Jiu coughed lightly. She explained, “She told me to slap her. If you don’t believe me, everybody in the laundry wing can be my witness.”

“Chief Housekeeper Yu!” Ji Yuxian spoke mildly.

“Your humble servant is here!” Chief Housekeeper Yu entered the dining room and replied with a bow.

“Go out there and take a look at what happened.”

“Yes!”

Su Jiu stood with her back straight and her head held high.

Chief Housekeeper Yu returned very soon. He walked towards Ji Yuxian to explain what had happened.

He included details like how Mrs. Qin refused to let the laundry wing wash clothes from Perched Phoenix Pavilion; how the servants of Perched Phoenix Pavilion humiliated Su Jiu’s Nanny and provoked Su Jiu into going to the laundry wing; how Chang Huan kicked out two of Mrs. Qin’s teeth; and how Xie Ying arrived, and was then slapped unconscious by Su Jiu.

His explanation was very detailed.

Su Jiu listened at the side with shock. Some of these events happened in her Perched Phoenix Pavilion, and others happened in the laundry wing. Chief Housekeeper Yu was gone for but a moment, yet he already knew exactly what had happened.

In that moment, Su Jiu finally understood that in the entire Ji Manor, only Ji Yuxian was truly a master.

“Do as Young Mistress wishes. Demote Mrs. Qin to the lowliest rank of servants, and promote the beaten servant girl to head of the laundry wing. Starting from tomorrow, give all the servants in the laundry wing a meat entree during their meals!” Ji Yuxian level headedly gave these orders.

“Yes!” Chief Housekeeper Yu replied respectfully.

“As for the four servant girls in Perched Phoenix Pavilion, withhold their salaries for three months. If this happens again, then let them leave Ji Manor!”

“Yes!”

“Xie Ying spoke back to Young Mistress, her superior. When she recovers from her injuries, she is to go to Perched Phoenix Pavilion and personally apologize.”

“Yes, I’ll immediately give these orders!”

Su Jiu looked at Ji Yuxian in surprise. She asked, “I hit your wife. Why aren’t you punishing me?”

She thought he would divorce her, or at least yell at her. Or, perhaps he would withhold her monthly allowance for half a year. She was prepared for whatever may come and was ready to accept whatever punishment he thought was necessary.

“Come here!”

Ji Yuxian smiled brightly at Su Jiu.

Su Jiu slowly walked over and stopped so that there was a chair between her and Ji Yuxian. “What?”

“My wife, remember that I only have one wife, and that is you!”

Su Jiu felt her heart skip a beat. She looked up in surprise.
