42 – Episode 42: Chicks

Rosalia tried to remove the hand that was wrapped around her ankle, but it wouldn’t come off easily.

In the meantime, the reanimated corpses had come dangerously close.

“Phew… Let’s stay calm. First, release the grip on the hand…”

Rosalia composed her breath, reached out towards the nearest corpse, and concentrated her mind.

Still at the apprentice level, she aimed to use the magic she had learned from the palace wizards.

“Don’t get distracted. Focus as much as possible.”

Closing her eyes, she cast the spell just as the wizards had taught her.

After a while, the area around her wrist became tense, and a warm heat was felt from her hand.

“Just a bit more… Just a bit more…”

As her hand reached out towards the approaching corpse, small sparks scattered around her hand.

The heat became more intense, and the sensation felt at her wrist became more solid.

At this rate, the living corpse that was supposed to be sacrificed in the queen’s first magic leaped towards her with eerie bone sounds.

The queen, facing the grotesque skeleton about to engulf her, tightly shut both eyes.

‘Is this how I’m going to die?’

Even in the moment when death was imminent, the queen’s curiosity about whether regression would manifest this time was greater than fear and dread.

Perhaps that’s why, even in the face of impending death due to magic failure, she thought it might be somewhat okay.

In a moment that felt like resignation, flames ignited around the queen’s wrist, and a huge stream of fire spewed out from her palm.

The creature rushing towards the queen, as well as the other corpses rushing in behind it, were all engulfed in flames.

“Is it… done?”

While still reaching out towards the creatures with flames still emanating from her palm, the queen looked bewilderedly at the burning corpses.

Although they had already died once and wouldn’t feel pain, they writhed in the burning flames and fell to the ground.

All the corpses approaching the queen were quickly incinerated, returning to where they originally belonged.

“Ha… I survived. But why won’t this stop?”

After a relieved sigh, Rosaria attempted to end the magic that had been cast, but it was not easily done.

In one way or another, the flames weakened and soon went out completely.

A small black smoke rose from her palm.

“Is it over?”

As she cautiously withdrew her outstretched arm, she suddenly felt a solid sensation from her shoulder to her wrist.

Feeling something strange, the queen extended her arm again.

Then, a huge fireball shot out from her palm like a cannon, creating a tremendous noise and recoil.

Caught off guard by the impact, the queen fell backwards.

“Wha-what…?”

Unexpectedly, sand was scattered and swept away by the shock wave at the location where the queen had been standing.

The appearance of the buried corpse within was fully revealed.

“…Handro.”

The owner of the hand that had been holding onto the queen’s ankle was none other than Handro.

Rosaria caressed Handro’s cold face and shed tears.

He, a warrior who had survived the savage war with the barbarian Rattvi, had lost his life trying to protect her in such a futile place. Her tears flowed with her own incompetence and regret.

For a long time, the queen mourned like that, then she looked at the body of the soldier in Terosa’s armor next to Handro’s corpse.

She raised her body and looked around, feeling another wave of frustration.

It wasn’t only Handro that was found by the shockwave of the fireball.

A large number of soldiers, enough to be considered the entire expeditionary force, were buried in the sand.

“What on earth… what is the reason…”

Sitting down on the floor with a desolate feeling, the queen poured out tears incessantly.

The queen, who had shown how cruel and powerful she was by beheading the leader Kanse and even executing his family in front of the whole world, was now in such a pitiful state that it was hard to recognize her.

A weak and inexperienced young girl who had ascended to the throne at a tender age due to the sudden death of the previous king.

Rosaria was neither more nor less than that at the moment.

As she was being overwhelmed by helplessness and self-blame on the parched sandy ground, someone was whistling and passing through the desert in the distance.

At first, the queen thought it was just the sound of the wind passing by, but as the sound got closer, she raised her trembling body and became alert to the direction where the sound was coming from.

A tall man with a wide-brimmed hat pressed down was still whistling and walking towards Rosaria’s direction.

Upon seeing the unfamiliar person, Rosaria extended her arm like before and shouted.

“Don’t come any closer!”

When she warned him, the man who had stopped in his tracks looked around and, with interest, observed the buried bodies of soldiers in the sand, scratching his chin and speaking.

“Oh… Impressive, isn’t it? To single-handedly wipe out these guys.”

“Stop fooling around and reveal your identity.”

“Scary… Just as rumored, a cruel and cold-hearted ruler.”

The man laughed with a mocking smile as he looked at Rosalia, who was reaching out her arm as if she could cast a spell at any moment.

“What’s the relationship between you and that well-dressed guy who fights so well? He was hugging you tightly and shedding tears pitifully.”

“What’s it to you? Stop nonsense and tell me who he is.”

“Tsk. Your Majesty~ I’ve come to help you, not to harm you.”

“What?”

The man slowly got up and reached into his pocket.

Rosalia tightened her grip on her outstretched arm, warning him once again.

The man raised his hands playfully.

In his hand, which came out of the pocket, there was a transparent bottle containing liquid.

The man raised the corner of his mouth slightly, looking at the queen, who was wearing a slightly puzzled expression.

“I came to help you?”

He emphasized that he was a harmless person and slowly lowered his body towards the corpse of a soldier lying on the ground.

The queen kept a watchful eye on his actions without letting her guard down.

The man opened the transparent bottle he had taken out of his pocket and poured the contents into the soldier’s mouth.

“Your Majesty, watch closely.”

After a while, the soldier, whose identity was indiscernible, stood up suddenly after ingesting the mysterious potion.

“Ugh! Ugh!”

The soldier gasped for breath as if he had just awakened from a deep sleep, looking around restlessly.

“What is… this…”

“How on earth…”

“Your Highness?”

Upon hearing the queen’s voice, the soldier quickly stood up and saluted her.

“See? I have such a talent.”

The man shrugged his shoulders.

The queen, who couldn’t believe what she was witnessing, stared at the revived soldier for a while.

Untainted skin, a lively complexion, and most importantly, the soldier was breathing like an ordinary person.

There was no doubt that he was completely different from the terrifying corpses that had come back to life just a moment ago.

“Is this, is this a command spell? Who exactly are you…”

“Let’s talk about that later. I’ll give you this potion. There’s only one left, you know?”

The man took out a bottle identical to the one before from his pocket and shook it.

“Don’t lie. You have more, right? Whatever you want, I’ll fulfill all conditions, just give them to me.”

“It’s a really nice and grateful offer. There’s really only one left. I’ll give you this, but just one! Grant me only one thing I desperately desire.”

“Fine. Tell me.”

“I hope no one comes here. It was a space where I could fully enjoy contemplation. I had a bit of a headache with your subordinates coming and disturbing me.”

The man continued speaking, exaggeratingly shaking his body as if he had a splitting headache.

“So, please make sure no one comes here. You, if you’re the Queen of Terosa, you can do that much, right? Right?”

The queen nodded, finding the request surprisingly not difficult.

“Got it. I’ll do that. I promise as the Queen of Terosa.”

“Good. Go ahead.”

The man smiled satisfactorily and threw the potion-containing bottle towards the queen in an easy-to-catch trajectory.

As soon as the queen received the potion, she immediately knelt beside Handro’s body and poured the potion into his mouth.

Shortly after, Handro’s eyes blinked open.

“Cough – cough.”

Handro showed a reaction similar to the resurrected soldier just moments ago.

“Handro! Are you okay?”

The queen looked at the revived Handro and sighed in relief.

Tears were about to fall from her eyes due to the overwhelming emotion.

While Handro was calming his body to regain consciousness, the queen expressed gratitude to the man of unknown identity.

“I won’t forget this favor. Thank you so much. As you requested, no one will be able to come here. Really.”

The man wore a content smile.

“Yeah~ Because you guys keep crossing the line, I end up using unnecessary power.”

The queen felt something odd in the man’s words.

“Unnecessary power?”

“Yeah. Like a sandstorm, for example…”

To cast a spell towards the man, the queen quickly extended her arm.

However, someone grabbed her neck from behind and restrained her, preventing her from using magic.

Lying on the ground, the queen, thrown off balance, could finally see the face of the person who attacked her.

“Y… you… sunflower-like wench!!”
