Chapter 23.3: Assassination

“That right. I must not give up. It’s not yet time to give up. She must not be allowed to return to the palace alive this time.”

“This is what my good daughter should be like.”

Duanmu Shuang said with a comforted look on her face.

The slanting sun rays shone down from the western sky, and upon a little road leading towards the Vermilion Bird Imperial Capital, an unremarkable looking horse carriage trundled along, with Phoenix Fifth driving the coach.

“Your Highness, the sky will turn dark soon and there doesn’t seem to be any place around here we can ask to spend the night in. Why not the young master and Your Highness make do and sleep in the carriage for the night?”

Phoenix Fifth looked up into the sky and slowed the carriage to a stop before she proposed outside the curtain of the carriage’s window.

“Mm.”

The curtain was lifted and Duanmu Xi came walking out together with Xuanyuan Mo.

“Your Highness, please take a rest here with the young master while your subordinate go look for so food.”

Very soon, Phoenix Fifth came back with two wild chickens.

After the three people ate a simple dinner, they then went off to rest on their own.

Duanmu Xi and Xuanyuan Mo went into the carriage and Phoenix Fifth stood guard outside.

Night fell. Duanmu Xi and Xuanyuan Mo opened their eyes at the same time, their gazes meeting, and they both saw an alert wariness in each other’s eyes.

Someone’s here and it seems there was quite a number of them. These newcomers had come with unfriendly intentions!

Duanmu Xi had just lifted the curtain when an arrow immediately whizzed towards her.

“Look out.”

Xuanyuan Mo waved his hand to swipe the arrow away and wrapped an arm around Duanmu Xi before leaping up through the top of the carriage.

“Assassins! Protect Her Highness.”

Phoenix Fifth raised her sword and stood in front of Duanmu Xi and Xuanyuan Mo. The other Phoenix Guards appeared very quickly after that to engage the black robed assassins.

Duanmu Xi stared at the group of masked women in black robes, somehow feeling that she has met all these people somewhere before.

That’s right. In her dreams. It’s the group of black robed women who were after her life.

Icy cold murder glinted in Duanmu Xi’s eyes. She had not gone to seek them out and here they are delivering themselves to their own doom. Today, she will make sure none of them will leave from here.

“Do not leave a single one alive.”

The icy voice was chilly like winter’s breeze, which caused the bunch of assassins to shiver involuntarily.

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Every one of the Phoenix Guards summoned up all the mystical energies in their bodies and used their greatest techniques, every single one of them charging straight at the group of assassins like their lives did not matter.

Seeing the stern look of murder on Duanmu Xi’s face, Phoenix Fifth’s eyes flashed.

She could not help but feel that Her Highness seemed different from before. Compared to the past, Her Highness seemed to be colder and restrained, her body unconsciously exuding a dominating kingly aura, more like an Emperor than Her Majesty herself.

[In the past two years, what has Her Highness gone through?]
