The Love of a Lycan

Chapter 689: This too shall pass

"Torak is with Serefina to find Kace in the northern coven," Lyrus answered. No matter how much it all finally made sense to him, still he needed to confirm about this surprising revelation. But, the Beta was sharp as ever. He could tell easily just by looking at the expression in Jedrek's face, that the Alpha king was never going to give him the peace for his restless mind.

However, it might have sounded beyond bizarre to anyone about how Jedrek's silence somehow formed a strong confirmation to what Lyrus just found out. All this time, the thing that he thought was absolutely impossible, had now turned out to have an unexpected twist of fate.

Meanwhile, Jedrek was not interested in anything when he heard her name...

Serefina…

The witch…

How long ago had it been since the last time Jedrek heard someone speak of her name? Has it been years? Centuries?—he thought.

At once, all the memories of her were flooding his mind. It needed more than a strong will to hold them back, keeping them in place at the back of his mind. A forgotten place that was dark, where he swore to never touch it ever again.

He was struggling, but then there Jedrek was, enduring the overflowing emotions. All while trying his best to hold onto his last façade, to appear nonchalant upon the mention of her name.

Serefina…

Her name echoed in his head again just like how it ever did. Meanwhile, Lyrus was still there in front of him, trying to tell him things that he needed to say. But without him knowing, the Alpha king was now half-heartedly listening. In fact, his entire being was now stunned upon the fact that he would meet her again.

"...for now, Alpha Torak and his people are in the Northern Coven. But based on the last information that I got from a trusted source, Alpha Torak and his people were crossing the sea to the sacred place. And that place is located on a different island." said Lyrus, ending his long report. He waited while watching Jedrek's expression. As if it would help him decoding what was inside the Alpha king's mind.

To his surprise, this was the first time Jedrek appeared this way. For many years he had been his Beta, never had he imagined to witness his king looking like this…

"Your Majesty, are you okay, Sir?" asked Lyrus. His voice showed a genuine concern for his king. "Do you need something?" The Beta walked over, approaching Jedrek. But then, with just one look that was thrown by the Alpha king to him, Lyrus stopped in his tracks.

"Yes," Jedrek answered curtly.

"Please, what is it, Your Majesty?" Lyrus knitted his brows, he was at loss when he watched the apparent look crossing Jedrek's expression for a brief moment. Pain. Something caused him pain.

"I want you to leave,"Jedrek said through his gritted teeth.

Once Jedrek let out his demand, unfortunately Lyrus didn't seem to immediately carry on. He missed the urgency behind Jedrek's words.

"LEAVE!" Jedrek roared. This time, it snapped Lyrus back to his senses. The Beta nodded his head, and then walked out of the room right away, leaving the furious King alone.

Jedrek grabbed his crystal glass, then crushed it into pieces. The pain from the sharp shards that pierced through the skin on his palm didn't seem to hurt him. In fact it was comforting him to stay sane.

He knew Serefina would come along with his two brothers, and their guardian angel mates. He could read what the witch was up to. After going missing for centuries, she chose to return now. And it all just to rally them up for another war with the same old enemy, the devils.

"What are you doing…Serefina?" Her name slipped away from his lips. With the image of her appeared in his head, now he craved for her presence even more.

This could not happen. The Alpha king was not that strong enough to fight this pain. He felt the need of consuming the drink that Maximus had been giving him. He remembered that it had been quite a while since the last time he drank that potion. No matter how much he tried, the pain was consuming him. He had to have it now to numb the dull ache that seemed so hard to get rid.

But then, Jedrek heard someone opened the door right when he was struggling with his own feelings.

"SCRAM!" He roared even more vicious than before.

However, she didn't slow down her step, nor did she flinch when she was yelled at.

Jedrek realized who it was. He didn't need to raise his head to see her figure. Although he hated to admit, her strong scent slightly calmed his nerves whenever she was around.

"What do you want?" Jedrek asked through his gritted teeth.

"You are hurt," Lilac said softly. She stopped her steps right in front of Jedrek. So now, the only thing that separated them was the table. Hearing what she had to say only made Jedrek scoffed. He raised his wounded hand, but now the deep cut was healed already, leaving only some blood on his palm.

Lilac looked at him sadly. "Not there." And she pointed her finger towards Jedrek's chest. "There."

Jedrek gripped the edge of his wooden table tightly that it cracked under his strong hold. It didn't scare Lilac a bit. "Scram, while I'm still being nice to you."

The guardian angel didn't heed his warning. She looked bitter and heartbroken.

"Do you want to hear my advice?" Lilac asked in her toneless voice. She didn't wait for Jedrek to continue what she had to say. "Don't get too deep into this pain, because there is going to be more pain that you will feel in the future. So be careful."

"I need you to leave," Jedrek said in the same toneless tone that Lilac used. He straightened his back and glared at his mate with his dark eyes.

"You may not like me just as much as I do not like you, but we are bound in this bond of soulmate. And Selene won't listen to our complaints. So, why don't we get along, and stay focus on trying to win this stupid war instead, by fulfilling our respective roles?" Lilac could feel her heart was thumping so fast against her chest. She tried to appear strong, but she was not sure how she looked like right now.

"I said, leave." Jedrek clenched his jaw tightly.

However, just like before, or the days before this, or ever. The guardian angel didn't listen to what he said. "Mate, or not. We are not going to spend our life together."

There was a brief moment of silence that fell between the two of them. And now Jedrek became impatient, because Lilac didn't explain the thing that she just said. He needed to listen to the reason for her words further. "What do you mean?"

"You already know for sure that in order to win this battle, you must sacrifice guardian angels." When Lilac saw how Jedrek was about to say something, she beat him to that. "The entire race of guardian angels went extinct in the first war.So, in the second war, which is this time, the same thing would happen."

"No. They died because they were sapped off their energy before going to war." Jedrek rejected the idea.

"The story is going to repeat itself. After all, the three of us are supposed to be dead by now, if it weren't for the second chance that was given to us by the moon goddess." Lilac bit her lips, when she looked at Jedrek sadly. "Let's carry out our role."

==============

Serefina looked up at the starry sky, staring at the moon with her lips shut tightly. But her heart howled to the goddess somewhere up above the sky.

If this had to end tragically, she hoped that all the pain would one day go away.

This too shall pass, right?
