The Legendary Junkmaster

Chapter 47: Let There Be Light (2)

Jason quickly removed the more than half empty magazine and replaced it with a fresh one. If he was forced to reload in the middle of another fight, it could potentially cost him his life! A sense of security washed over him when he heard the new magazine click in place. His eyes had a steady look about them as he pushed on, deeper into the town.

After some time had passed, Jason became confident that they had guessed correctly. Most of the gang members had to be stationed on rooftops, waiting to ambush him since he did not meet any more groups in the alleyways. Soon, he found himself glancing around the edge of a building that was quite close to his store.

Sure enough, there were fewer people in the camp outside of Star Gear than there was the previous night. Jason felt greatly reassured about this plan after he saw that. He did not have to wipe out everyone who was there. He just had to make them feel insecure. Like they could be attacked from anywhere!

There was no boisterous atmosphere amongst those seated around the fire that night. They sat pretty rigidly, and their heads would turn at every little sound. Jason felt a bead of sweat roll down his temple as his fingers twitched. With a deep breath, he crouched down and kept to the shadows as he crept closer to the group.

A few pairs of eyes swept past him from time to time. However, due to the poor light and dark clothes, they failed to notice him. The tension in the air was palpable as Jason drew the Viper up into a firing position. A few moments of silence passed as Jason picked out the order of who he would fire at.

The string of the Viper thrummed as the first bolt was released! Followed by the sound of the weapon being cocked without waiting to see if he hit anyone. As a result, the next bolt was fired when a horrifying cry of pain rang out in the camp!

Jason did not pause to take stock of the damage he had already caused. Instead, he quickly turned tail and ran for the nearest corner! Loud shouts that carried orders rang out, which snowballed into alerting all the gang members that had been stationed in nearby buildings!

Soon, the whole area seemed to come alive due to the noise they made! As Jason cocked the Viper again, he tilted his head as he tried to figure out where all of his enemies were. 'I'm utterly surrounded! I have to get out before they can close the net!'

Heavy thuds came from the alleyway he had just escaped from. With a savage grin on his face, Jason popped out from the corner and fired the Viper blindly! A man wheezed as he hit the ground hard. Blood began leaking through his shirt in his stomach area. The man's eye appeared frantic as he clutched the bolt that stuck out of his abdomen. When he glanced towards the corner again, Jason was already gone!

A dark shadow fled through the alleyways at a fast pace. It would glance over its shoulder before every turn it made. Whenever the gang members started to catch up to it, the shadow would always hit them with a sudden attack that made them hesitate to pursue.

Jason grinned as he slowly brought down more of the thugs using this method. 'I can't believe they're stupid enough to just follow me.' Jason laughed behind his mask as he thought about it. He had prepared himself for them to flood the different alleyways to try and cut him off. Instead, they were so angry and confused they stupidly just followed the same path that he took!

Of course, Jason would not complain if they wanted to make his job easier on him. It was at that point that he felt the temperature quickly plummet behind him. 'Shit!' Jason quickly dove behind an old dumpster without even looking back. A wave of cold air passed by, leaving a trail of frost in its wake.

'Thank god,' Jason sighed heavily as he poked the Viper out for a blind potshot. 'It's not ice, but it would still slow me down. It might even throw me into shock due to the sudden temperature change.'

Jason had no plans to be turned into an artistic statue, so he was pretty glad that this person had not developed their ability at that point. Since another wave did not follow after his potshot, he quickly set off at a run again.

The sounds of those who had been chasing him gradually faded away as he took a few more turns. 'Hm, they've given up already?' Jason paused to listen more closely to his surroundings. Only his breathing made any noise in the darkness of that alley.

A shiver ran down his spine as he slowly took a few steps backwards. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end as his eyes continued to sweep where he had passed by during his escape.

"What's wrong? Why aren't you running?" Syssie whispered frantically.

"Something isn't right. Don't you feel it?" Jason whispered back, momentarily forgetting that he could have just thought his answer.

"Don't be stupid! It's just like every other alley! Now hurry! Before they catch up!" Syssie's voice grew louder as she urged him to continue onwards.

Jason shook his head and took a knee. His eyes narrowed as he stared straight into the darkness that he had left behind. His mind kept saying that something was wrong, but he could not see what it was.

"Who's there?" Jason called his voice bouncing off the nearby walls.

Jason felt his hands begin to tremble as more sweat broke out down his back. A sense of danger suddenly came from his right side that made Jason let his body fall to the ground! He twisted his body to land on his side and let the readied bolt in Viper fly before he even confirmed a target!

A machete flashed where his neck had been as his bolt passed through the figure who stood there silently. Jason's eyes went wide when he saw that his weapon had no effect on this newcomer!
