The Legendary Junkmaster

Chapter 152: The Right Turn (2)

"Keep moving!" Jason roared as the bridge came into view.

It was an enormous mass of concrete that was crumbling. Vines, moss, and other miracles of nature were growing in sporadic points all over it. The bridge itself rose in a steep arc to curve over the roads below before winding its way between buildings and over smaller ones. Jason cursed as he wondered if this was the right course of action.

He could already see ruined vehicles on the bridge, but apart from that, they would be fairly easy to spot as they crossed it. Jason was attempting to gauge whether the structure was even still safe to use. So many years of neglect and its current condition suggested that it could collapse at any moment. Never mind if a battle was to take place on top of it.

Jason chewed on his lower lip as the beasts pulled the waggons with all of their might under the strong whipping of their drivers. Jason glanced back to the street they had just left behind, but so far it seemed like the Alliance had not caught up to them. They were nowhere to be seen! 'Maybe... Just maybe we'll make it through this!' Jason allowed a spark of hope to ignite in his heart and mind as he pushed the ANT-V to keep up with the waggons.

When he glanced down at its gauges, he noticed that its fuel was running low, and the liquid he created to help keep the engine cool and running smooth was also reaching dangerous levels. It was clear that his prototype had some performance issues, especially when he exerted it, that he would have to fix in the future.

Jason frowned as he thought about when he would have time to top them up. Naturally, he had not come unprepared for this journey, and he had a few canisters of each fluid in the waggon with his materials. The question was whether they could find a safe spot for him to deal with the issue before they ran out!

They raced around the abandoned vehicles as they attempted to put more distance between themselves and the Alliance soldiers. But, before they had gone too far, they came across a problem!

"Shit!" Zach eyed the blockade of rusted metal and loose wheels ahead of them.

The bridge had been blocked across all lanes by the abandoned traffic, and their group definitely did not have enough time to move it. Jason cast his eyes around before coming up with a plan. 'If we can't reach a safe area, then we'll just create one!'

"Zach! Have the guards push some of these things to create a wall that will stop us from being seen from below! We'll hide behind it for a while and let the beasts and the rest of us catch our breath!" Jason shouted as he turned to glance at the stunned merchant.

Zach grinned before bellowing out his orders. Except he took it a step further and told them to try to make a perimeter that would cover the entire caravan from all angles. He had to admit that using the waste that had been left behind by the Old World as a sort of camouflage was a sharp decision at a time like this!

-Antihero]

Jason felt the sweat running down his forehead as he kept his eyes on the streets below as the guards began their task. The whole thing would be ruined if they were spotted moving the junk around to give themselves cover! Jason felt his nerves reach a breaking point as he expected the Alliance soldiers to come into view at any moment!

Minutes passed slowly as he listened to the grunting behind him. He cursed the low fluid levels of the ANT-V as he was certain he could help speed up the process if he used it to help move the vehicles around. But, of course, there was the risk that his ANT-V would stop working part way through.

"Jason! Come on! We're ready!" Zach called out, startling Jason and making his heart skip a beat.

Jason sighed as he hurried inside the encirclement of ruined vehicles. There was a decent amount of space and the trucks on the right side hid the waggons well. As long as they did not do anything stupid, then the enemy should pass them by. After all, who would think that they chose to stay still when being chased? It would only be natural to assume that they were doing their best to flee the area!

Zach ordered for the waggons to be pushed up against the ruined vehicles as an extra line of defence in case of the worst-case scenario coming true. Once they were fully set up, the guards heaved sighs of relief and a nervous chatter began amongst themselves. Zach gave them a reassuring smile, but Jason shook his head.

'Let's hope they don't see through this disguise. It didn't seem like they had anyone specialised in tracking, but you never know.' Jason sighed as he wondered if he had made the right call with this ruse. There was just too much that could go wrong. 'I should prepare the ANT-V in case we need to make a run for it again...'

Meanwhile, back in the city...

"Jones! Hold the line! Don't let these beasts break through!" Captain Lowes of this alliance expeditionary force shouted as he cursed their luck.

'How'd they get so lucky? These beasts appeared just as we were about to get our hands on them!' He cursed as he looked at the trail of dead bodies being trampled by the mole creatures. 'We've already lost twelve soldiers! We have to lure them to a chokepoint!'

His orders carried over the din of battle as they retreated towards a relatively intact building. Luck just was not on their side. The group that had split off to find a way around the moles had run into more of them! It was as if the moles had been attempting to surround them at the same time! 'Do they have someone that's capable of directing these beasts?' Naturally, he would assume so with how the situation was playing out.

However, the moles did not act like they were truly organised. It was more like they were operating on their own natural instincts. Otherwise, his unit should have been wiped out already. 'What the hell is going on?' His unit continued to retreat in an organised manner as the bodies of the moles continued to pile up. Gunfire and the sound of Powers being used became the soundtrack to their attempt at survival.

As the unit started to file through the doorway to the building, the moles became more frantic. It was as if they were aware that it would cost them many more casualties to take out these humans if they made it inside! Their assault intensified as they slowly chipped away at the Alliance's numbers.

"Captain Lowes!" The woman who had been watching Jason in Murk Point suddenly heaved breathlessly as they made it inside. "Somebody's watching us from the building across the street!"

Captain Lowes frowned as he edged towards the broken window by the door to take a look. However, his frown deepened as took in the sight of the three figures watching from a cavity in the building. 'I don't recognise them from the caravan's group... Are they responsible for this mess?' Captain Lowes hissed as his face turned red and he clenched his fists. 'Who are you to mess with the Alliance! I'll definitely remember this!'

On the other side of the street, Archive turned to the two men beside her. "You guys did an excellent job."

"No, if it were not for your direction on where to use our Powers then this would never have happened. As always... You are the amazing one Lay Archive." One of the men put on his best boot licking face as he complimented her.

"What do we do now? It won't be too much longer until they break free of the frenzy I caused in their minds." The other man frowned as he watched the situation continue to unfold.

"There's not much more we can do. We've given them the chance they need while bloodying the Alliance's nose. Even if they want to continue pursuing Mr Wright, they won't be able to keep it up for long with this blow to their state of mind. They'll be concerned about another ambush happening." Archive heaved a sigh as she stood up from her crouched position to walk away from the scene. 'I'm afraid it's up to Mr Wright if he can avoid the other problems along the road...'
