The Legendary Junkmaster

Chapter 125: Breakthrough (5)

For the next few days, Jason's life consisted of reading boring reports. Roughly 20% of the boxes had something that interested him about specific beasts. These were all saved to Syssie's memory banks for possible use in the future.

Sentinel had pretty much left him alone to get on with it. He seemed to be caught up in his own research stored in the Nest's computer network. Jason would have been lying if he said he was not interested in what Sentinel had discovered. But his mentor never shared any of his findings.

Just as Jason reached his tenth box of the day, his curiosity was finally piqued by the title of the next report. 'Jarkovski's Serum...' Jason hummed as he wondered if he had finally found what they had been looking for!

Needless to say, he was disappointed to discover that he could not understand the initial theory. Although he could tell that this Serum was most likely the first stable product for a permanent change in a human's DNA.

'Looks like we finally got something...' Jason heaved a loud sigh as he glanced over the paperwork. 'But it's still useless to us for now.'

"What do you think? Will you try gaining more PP to unlock the knowledge to understand this?" Syssie hummed as she absentmindedly stroked her cheek.

"Who knows?" Jason shrugged his shoulders as his blue eyes stared at her. "We can't be sure how bad it will affect me to even buy one type of knowledge. We probably need several to understand this."

Jason tapped on the stack of papers in front of him as he frowned. 'There's just too much risk involved just now. I need to find a permanent solution to Syssie's implant first.'

Jason's mind felt tired as he considered the feasibility of the project that all of the reports were part of. As far as he could tell, it should be possible. It was certainly worthwhile looking into.

'It would go a long way to helping me survive on my own if I leave the Empire.' Jason's eyes went blank as he fantasized about what was waiting for him out in the big wide world.

-Antihero]

He was sure that there was plenty for him to see. Inventions to marvel over and I interesting people. 'Come to think of it... Why have I been so fired up for training? When I opened Star Gear I could only think of creating things. But when the Red Steel Gang came along every solution I came up with required harming them.'

'It's the same with cadet training. As soon as the fighting starts it gets harder to hold myself back...' Jason eyed Syssie suspiciously. He had been swept up in one thing after another. This was the first real chance he had to stop and think for a moment.

"Syssie..." Jason called out, feeling the need to use his voice for his question.

"Yeah?" Syssie had a faraway look in her eyes as she responded.

"How bad is the degradation of your components? Is it severe enough that it can be affecting my decisions?" Jason squinted at the AI. Although he did want to suspect her of meddling he still had to ask.

"It's not intentional if that's what your asking!" Syssie snapped back before realising what she had said. Her eyes went wide as she stared at Jason who's jaw had dropped open.

An awkward silence descended between them as Jason digested her answer. 'Hell, I was just guessing because I didn't want to consider that it was just who I really am!' Jason coughed lightly as he gave Syssie a solemn look.

"Don't worry about it..." For some reason, Jason felt like he could tell that Syssie had told him the truth when she said it was not intentional. This made his mind wander to some other possibilities.

'Will it get worse if I don't fix her up? Will there even be a me left?' Jason shook his head as the doubts began to pile up. 'What about Sentinel? Sometimes he seems more like a machine. Does his Power have some kind of side effect?'

Jason was left wondering if it had ever been him in control whenever he got into fights or danger. Or had something else been slipping into his mind? 'So far it's mostly brought positive results. But other things, well, maybe they could have been handled better.'

Jason sighed as he wondered if it would play a part in everyday decisions as well. He had started off building tho gs useful for making the world a better place to live or make jobs easier. Somehow, he had easily fallen into the trap of creating items for killing.

'It would be fine if it was for self-defence. But can I really say that's what it started as? I made the Primal for myself but ended up selling it. Then it became about the money. But I wonder, how many people have been hurt by my creations now?'

Jason's eyes narrowed. It was an unpleasant thought, to say the least. However, he recognised that this unknown influence could pose a problem down the line. It was something that he would have to address when he had the necessary knowledge to deal with it.

Syssie sat staring at him quietly. To be honest, she had expected for Jason to fly into a fit of outrage. But he had been surprisingly calm about the whole thing. She had her own thoughts on what was going on but was always reluctant to voice them.

'My circuits can't regulate everything anymore. The thought process that a computer would go through has been infecting his mind for a while now. I'm surprised he noticed it on his own.'

Syssie sighed as she brushed her hair behind her ear with a delicate hand. 'But if it goes on for too long, will he even be human anymore?' Syssie sighed as Jason grabbed another box and opened it. She could not help but raise an eyebrow when she saw the look of excitement on his face.

"Syssie! This is the breakthrough we've been looking for!" Jason wore a broad smile as he turned to look at her with a glint in his eyes...
