The Legendary Junkmaster

Chapter 123: Breakthrough (3)

With Syssie's help, they could brute force their way through the research. Syssie devoured the entire first box in roughly half an hour. Jason guessed that it would have taken himself around five hours or more to go through it. Unfortunately, the entire report was only Dr Brown's rambling about how amazing that species of fish were.

He believed they could store vast amounts of information in their brains. As if every member of the species had a photographic memory. 'At the very least, if we can work out the procedure to merge DNA, I might use that fish to increase my own memory.' Jason sighed as he dropped the last few pages back into the box.

'There has to be something useful in here.' Jason frowned as he glanced at the rest of the boxes.

"Why don't we filter through them?" Syssie asked with a frown of her own. "You know, we can just look at the cover pages and decide if it's worth reading. We'll get through it faster that way."

"Its worth a shot…" Jason shrugged his shoulders as he moved the box to the side and grabbed a new one. "Nope… No… Definitely not…"

Jason grumbled as he checked inside several boxes, only to be disappointed by the titles of their contents. A small pile was gathering up off to the side as he eliminated them. 'Hm? This might be good…'

The box he had just looked inside contained a report about isolating specific DNA chains. A brief glint appeared in Jason's eyes as he chose this one as their next victim. As he placed it on the desk and pulled out the first few sheets from within, he could not help but frown.

'I don't understand it.' Jason's mood deflated as he read a few pages while Syssie scanned the entire document at a rapid pace.

"It's not good news…" Syssie sighed once she completed her task. "I used your unlocked knowledge to search for important information. However, most of the science behind this experiment is beyond your understanding."

"What's the good news?" Jason cocked an eyebrow at her while she sighed. He had already suspected that they would gain a lot of information that would be useless to them right now.

"Ninety-three of a hundred test subjects that the resulting serum was injected into died within minutes… The remaining seven only lasted an hour…" Syssie wore a sad smile on her pretty face as she glanced at Jason.

"Let me guess… It wasn't a pleasant death?" Jason closed his eyes as he thought about their sacrifice. "Considering the experiments continued even after this loss. They must have believed the result would be worth it."

Jason shook his head as he wondered how many people they had sacrificed just to fill half of the reports in the room. 'What if they all ended in failures?' Jason's expression turned grim when he considered that potential outcome.

It was possible that despite all the research, they might have never had succeeded. But that would mean that humanity's Powers came from elsewhere. Jason felt another headache brewing as he considered all the secrets that had been buried with the Old World.

'Come to think of it… How many years ago did all of this happen? Some stories I heard in Highrise said the Old World existed a couple of hundred years ago. But, Sentinel's story made it seem like it could have been longer?' Jason mulled over the potential reason for this for several minutes.

'People either did not mention how many years had passed when they told the stories through the generations. Or someone has purposely removed anyone who knew to suppress the information.' It seemed like a far-fetched conspiracy theory. But in this world with Powers, anything was possible.

"What were they even thinking back then?" Syssie pondered aloud as her eyes flashed. She was scanning over the stored documents once again for any information that might point them in the right direction.

"Who knows? Maybe it was scientific curiosity? Maybe it was for survival? Hell, it might even have been related to trying to expand their military might." Jason shrugged his shoulders while he daydreamed about the past. "But somehow, I feel like we need to understand the origin of today's beasts to get a better picture of humanity back then."

Some of the most recent things that they had heard and read in the reports suggested that the beasts in them were relatively new to humans. But, if that was the case, where did they come from? Had they always been on Earth? Was it some kind of evolutionary process?

There were just too many questions that Jason wanted answers to. It would be ideal if one report housed in this NEST held some actual data on it. 'Even if it doesn't… The way things are going, there's probably one out there that has the answers.'

Jason sighed as he tossed the box to the side and grabbed a new one. When he opened the lid and took a glance at the title, his eyes flashed and his hands trembled.

"Nest: Testing Site 22, Success!" Jason's voice was so low that it was barely audible.

His mouth went dry as he read the title a second time. Then a third. 'Testing site 22… That's the one by Highrise!' Jason attempted to restrain his excitement as he raced to the desk and pulled everything out of the box!

"Hey! Watch what you're doing! If you mess it up now I'll have to sort it out before it makes sense!" Syssie whined as she watched on. But Jason did not care.

'If they connected the one by Highrise to this one, then we're already ahead of the Empire!' Jason spread the pages around as he looked over through them for any important information. 'Sentinel may have just handed us the key to understanding what we saw in there.'

Jason was ecstatic when he wondered how long it would have taken Syssie and himself to uncover this Nest. That was, if they could even gain access to it. Jason figured that somebody must keep a regular eye on the place. Probably Friday. One line on a page caught Jason's attention at that moment.

'Success! We have combined the DNA of a man and one of the new Alligator type beasts…'
