The Legendary Junkmaster

Chapter 118: The Old World (3)

It took Sentinel a few minutes to reach Jason's room, where Syssie was waiting for him. He must have been close by anyway, since he disabled her sleep cycle. Sentinel slipped inside and smiled at Syssie with an awkward expression.

"I know this is unusual. I hope I didn't alarm you when I forcefully kept you from shutting down."

"It's fine… I think. But why would you need to speak with me without Jason?" Syssie narrowed her eyes as she studied Sentinel's expression.

"Straight to the point?" Sentinel sighed while meeting Syssie's gaze. "I trust machines more than I do humans. My Power allows me to understand them better. You don't really need to worry about those details. I want to ask you. Can I trust Jason?"

Syssie frowned upon hearing Sentinel's question. "Why would you ask that?"

"I don't know Jason. Not personally, anyway." Sentinel took a deep breath as he paused. "But I need to know if he's someone that I can rely on."

The air between them became heavy as Syssie considered how she should answer. She would say yes. However, that was subjective to her own relationship with Jason.

"Your honest opinion will be fine." Sentinel showed a warm smile as he waited for Syssie.

"Then I have to say yes." Syssie studied Sentinel's face for his reaction.

However, she got a surprise when she saw Sentinel appear relieved. In all honesty, she had expected for him to question her on why Jason was reliable. But he just accepted it.

"Thank you." Sentinel had a glint in his eye as he glanced at Jason sleeping in his bed. "That makes me feel much better about having him accompany me tomorrow."

Syssie squinted at him as he casually got up to leave. 'What are you up to?' She thought as she stared at Sentinel's departing figure. However, as soon as Sentinel had left the room, her sleep cycle kicked in.

Jason woke up feeling rather refreshed. He stretched across the bed before climbing out and putting his new clothes on. He felt strange as he stood there. Though it felt good at the same time. Jason raced into the workshop. His eyes darted around as he planned out his day.

Syssie chose this moment to appear. "Jason. Don't get excited."

Jason raised an eyebrow at her in a questioning manner. However, before she could respond with more details, Sentinel's room door burst open. His cybernetic eye landed on Jason first. Right before he flashed a smile at Syssie.

"Good. You're dressed already. Let's go." Sentinel walked straight past Jason, who was in a daze. "Hurry now."

Jason looked at Syssie with a frown before chasing after his mentor. He did not dare to refuse. As the pair followed Sentinel, Syssie filled Jason in on last night's events.

'What do you think is going on?' Jason squinted at Sentinel's back as he wiped his sweaty palms on his new work outfit.

"Who knows?" Syssie shrugged her shoulders. "It has to be important, though. Otherwise there was no point to last night."

Jason silently agreed with her thoughts. It took some time for them to leave the compound. However, Sentinel led them towards an area that connected to docks below the bridge. Jason stared wide-eyed at the platform that Sentinel boarded.

The platform was hanging over the edge of the bridge on what looked to be cable wire. Jason did not feel confident that it could hold their joint weight. But Sentinel stared at him while tapping his foot. Jason sighed as he edged onto the platform. It was basically a primitive form of an elevator.

"Take us down." Sentinel nodded to the worker, who eased the cable that he gripped through his hands.

Jason's stomach churned as the platform swayed in mid-air during their descent. There was no helping it. It just felt entirely unsafe to him. 'Why don't they put some barriers around the edges or something?' Jason thought as his face turned green.

"Does it really matter? It seems fine to me." Syssie smiled.

Jason felt like throttling the AI who was apparently fine with their current situation.

Luckily, he did not have to suffer for too long, as they soon reached the docks below. Jason jumped into the air slightly as he set foot on a solid surface with a broad grin on his face.

"This way." Sentinel cut off Jason's celebration with a solemn tone as he walked towards a dock behind a gate.

Jason's eyes went wide as he took everything in. There were a few small boats tied up, but they were nothing impressive. However, when Sentinel opened the gate and led them beyond. Jason did not know what to think.

The vessel that had hid in this area looked sleek and clean. The ship's hull was made of a dull, shiny metal that barely reflected any light. Sentinel wasted no time and casually leapt onboard.

"What are you waiting for? Come on." Sentinel sounded like he was growling at Jason, but he did not take it personally.

The latter pursued his mentor's lead and boarded the strange vessel with eager eyes. "Where are we going?"

Jason looked at Sentinel expectantly, but he was met with silence. 'What the hell? Come on! You've already dragged me out here! Just tell me what's going on!'

Syssie chuckled at Jason's frustration. But there was nothing they could do. It was up to Sentinel if he wanted to share the details with them before they got to their destination. So there was no point in worrying about it.

-Antihero]

Sentinel started up the ship's engine and slowly brought them away from the docks. They weaved between the other parked vehicles for a few minutes before they reached an area of clear open water. Sentinel immediately opened up the throttle, and the vessel shot forward!

Jason was caught by surprise as the wind slapped at his face. The vessel bound on the water's surface and sprayed a white cloud behind them wherever they went. It was kind of exciting once he got used to it. Jason crept to the edge and looked down at the water.

Some aquatic animals swam past, but Jason did not recognise them. 'There's still so much to discover.' Jason sighed before he realised a problem.

'Wait! I don't have the Infinity! What if we're going somewhere dangerous?' He felt a bead of sweat appear on his forehead as he considered the consequences of such an oversight.

"What's there to worry about? Even if it is dangerous, do you really think Sentinel can't protect you?" Syssie raised a concerned eyebrow as she glanced at Jason.

'I guess you're right. But still, that doesn't make me feel any better.' Jason rolled his eyes before settling down to watch the scenery roll past.

The vague shapes of buildings that had been overrun by nature was quickly replaced with forests and rolling plains. Jason saw many things that he never knew existed as the hours began to pass and Bridgend disappeared behind them.

Sentinel began to hum a tune while he focused on directing them towards their destination. Jason cast a critical eye over his mentor as he wondered what game he was playing.

"We'll be there in a few minutes. Keep your eyes on the coast." Sentinel suddenly said rather sharply.

That comment made Jason curious as his eyes moved to the coast as he tried to guess where they were headed. However, he became confused when he noticed that the coastline was becoming obscured by a strange fog.

"What the hell is that?" Jason shouted to Sentinel, who just chuckled in response.

Jason turned his worried gaze back to the fog. There were slight breaks in it here and there, which allowed him to spot some rusted structures. 'I guess this is where we are going.' Jason raised an eyebrow as Sentinel steered the vessel towards the fog.

Before long, Jason could not make out anything as they were wrapped up in the fog. His eyes constantly scanned around him, but to no avail. Suddenly, there was the sound of something scraping along the hull of the ship.

Jason felt goosebumps rise on his arms at that sound, but Sentinel appeared unnerved. The latter slowly eased up on the throttle until the boat came to a halt. It silently boobed on the water with its gentle waves. Jason felt uneasy as Sentinel suddenly jumped overboard!

There was a slight splashing noise, and Jason panicked! He stumbled as he reached the area where Sentinel had disappeared, only to find him standing waiting for them in the knee-deep water.

"We haven't got all day. Let's go." Sentinel snorted.

"Where are we?" Jason called down as he noticed the vague shadows of large buildings all around them.

"This place? It's the Aquarium." Sentinel chuckled. "But I think you'll be more interested in what's hiding in its depths…"

'Oh, God! Don't tell me! He's actually brought us to the NEST that he found!' Jason's eyes sparkled as he glanced around…
