6. The Night Watchman (6)

Afterwards, we gradually shifted our topic from the ferocious ghost to how Chairman Mao (the first Chairman after the founding of new China) had taught the Chinese to believe in science and cast out superstition. I didn’t pay much attention to the ferocious ghost, but Zhang was freaked out.

“There are no ghosts in the world… Well, I’ll walk you out…” When I saw his strange expression, I couldn’t bear to see him leave alone, so I picked up the torch again. “Let’s go!”

“That man hasn’t been sent out yet. I have a bad hunch…” Zhang muttered to himself while walking out of the watchroom with me.

“I’ll check the 6th floor first. You go downstairs. I’ll meet you downstairs later. Come on! There are no ghosts at all!” I comforted Zhang again.

Zhang nodded and strode downstairs quickly. From afar, I could see his worried look in the dim light of the torch. He looked back at me and then turned to go down.

I checked the 6th floor one more time. Walking alone in the darkness, I felt a little creepy.

I had actually heard of ferocious ghosts before. As the tales didn’t sound that scary, I didn’t take them seriously. Even if people did become ghosts after their death, they were not of the same kind. It was said that only those who still remembered the grudges that their original hosts held before their death, would become ferocious ghosts. People rarely had a chance to meet a ferocious ghost, but if they did, they were unlikely to survive.

However, these were just folk tales. In this era, no one would buy such things anymore.

After checking the 6th floor, I hurriedly went downstairs. I tried to keep up with Zhang and make him calm down.

I had just reached the landing on the 4th floor when I saw Zhang walking over in sweat. When he saw me, he let out a long sigh of relief.

“Mao, looks like it’s alright. Nothing happened!” he said, panting.

“Good!” I felt relieved as well. I turned and was about to return to the 5th floor with him.

Zhang strode forward and got ahead of me. He walked very fast as if there was something chasing him.

“I told you there was nothing to be afraid of,” I added.

“Ye…s…” he stammered.

I laughed, but suddenly, I noticed that it was very dark around us. Only then did I find that the torch in Zhang’s hand was out of power and we were walking in the dim light from my torch.

“What’s up? Is your torch out of battery?” I asked.

“Nothing. When I arrived at the 1st floor just now, it was dark everywhere, and I didn’t feel that scared. Anyway, there was no light,” he answered slowly.

“Oh!” I responded. As he walked at an incredible speed, we returned to the watchroom soon.

After resting for a while, when it was about 2:30 in the morning, I got into bed.

“Pah!” I turned off the light and we were enveloped in darkness again. The hospital was dead silent.

“Mao, you were too careless. The elevator wasn’t locked. I just reached the 3rd floor when I heard a ‘ding’ coming downstairs. I was startled!” Zhang complained in bed.

I turned over, feeling my heart suddenly skip a beat.

The elevator wasn’t locked? Impossible! I was certain that I had locked it! But how come Zhang heard a ‘ding’?

He just said that it was dark everywhere on the… 1st floor?

How could this be? There were still people in the nurse station and the emergency room. What’s more, the lights in the lobby were still on…

“Zhang,” I called out.

There was no response.

‘Forget it! I’ll ask him tomorrow.’ I turned over and fell asleep.
