14. The Fire (2)

Lu Xia’s finger stopped on the last line.

Sun Zheng turned to him and asked, “Is the woman who was burned to death, Chen Juan?”

“Definitely not! If it were Chen Juan, it should be easy to find out.” Lu Xia shook his head with certainty.

“Then who could it be? How come someone was burned to death in the Internal Medicine Department at midnight?” Sun Zheng asked.

Lu Xia was confused as well. He looked at Sun Zheng blankly and continued, “I don’t know either. I wonder how come there was a baby laughing in the restroom and the Internal Medicine Department was suddenly on fire at midnight. Moreover, it’s odd  that nobody knows the identity of the woman who was burned to death…”

Seeing that he couldn’t draw a conclusion, Sun Zheng reached out and closed the notebook. He picked up the floor plan while suggesting, “We’d better leave this room and go downstairs first.”

Lu Xia laughed out loud.

What was so funny? Sun Zheng looked at him with a puzzled look. Pointing at his own sweaty face and soaked shirt, Lu Xia continued, “I think we might not be able to leave.”

Hearing that, Sun Zheng immediately put down the floor plan and hurried to the door.

He pulled the door hard but failed to open it.

He looked at Lu Xia with a shrug, as if to blame his joke for being true. He reached out and tried again but still could not pull the door open.

Lu Xia also frowned.

“What’s wrong?” Sun Zheng asked while lowering his head and fiddling with the door lock. “Is it locked outside? Or we should push it open?”

With that, he banged the door with his body but failed to open it once again.

“What are you still sitting there for? Come to give me a hand!” Sun Zheng shouted at Lu Xia angrily.

Lu Xia put down his notebook and walked over with a thoughtful look.

“Wasn’t that woman trapped in this room back then? She inhaled too much smoke and died, then was burnt beyond recognition…”

“What do you mean?” Sun Zheng stopped banging the door and stared at him, gasping.

With a bitter smile on his face, Lu Xia scratched his head and responded, “I just don’t know what to do.”

“Do you think we will be trapped here and burned to death?” Sun Zheng thought it was ridiculous.

Lu Xia didn’t answer. He just wiped his sweat off his forehead with a frown.

“What caused the fire that night?” After a long pause, he suddenly asked Sun Zheng again.

“The cir… the circuit was aging.” Sun Zheng was a little confused.

“Then who was using electrical appliances in the room at that time?” Lu Xia’s expression became serious.

“Was that woman?” Sun Zheng asked tentatively.

“I don’t know.” Lu Xia looked around and paused for a moment before he continued, “I have a clue, but now, I want to confirm it.”

“What?” Sun Zheng widened his eyes. “What’s the use of confirming it?” We can’t even get out of this room now!”

After wiping his forehead again, Lu Xia strode to the wall and ripped the poster off the wall. He then turned to Sun Zheng and said, “If we can’t figure this out, we will not be able to find a way to get out. Come on, let’s rip them off!”

Sun Zheng still wanted to say something, but when he saw the serious look on Lu Xia’s face, he walked to the wall on the other side hesitantly and then ripped off all the posters.

Taking a deep breath, Lu Xia looked back and asked, “Are you ready to see the marks on these walls?”

Sun Zheng rolled his eyes at him and flashed the torch at the wall.

Fingerprints!

The wall was full of black fingerprints!

These were not from an adult.

They were very small.

Obviously, they were left by a baby.

Some of them were black and clear, while the others had blurred edges.

Looking at the fingerprints on the walls around them, Sun Zheng felt terribly shocking.

It was like the marks made on the walls as a baby on fire crawled about in the room.

The baby was crying bitterly.

Mo… mmy?
