Chapter 48: Night Wing in Their Eyes

Qin Yi had just been attacked when Li Qinglin laid siege to the Eternal Temple. Technically speaking, the two of them weren’t that far apart, because the temple was quite close to the palace. But the actual distance between them was almost as far as the span of a small town. Therefore, they had no idea what the other person was doing.

Qin Yi was running from the prince’s residence to Li Qinglin’s place when the Ascending Terrace burst into flames.

He paused when he saw the conflagration in the distance and immediately understood everything.

“My brother-in-law is such a reliable teammate!” He was much relieved and smiled at Liusu.

Liusu replied indifferently. Li Qinglin was so repliable as a partner that it was boring, because there was a lot less fun.

An idea even struck Qin Yi at that moment… Mang Zhan was bound to flee the city when he saw the fire… The crown prince’s residence shouldn’t be in a lot of danger right now, so should he try to stall Mang Zhan instead? Maybe kill him while he was still in Nanli’s territory?

But that idea only occupied his mind for a fleeting moment. In the end, his concern for Li Qingjun prevailed, and he ran at full speed again.

Night Wing was yet to recover from her injuries, and if an advanced demon showed up, she and Li Qingjun could still be in danger.

The wooden sword wasn’t mobile. If the two girls stayed safely at the core area of the formation, no harm would come to them. However, they might not be the enemies’ target. If they started roaming the residence and started snatching the female members of Li Qinglin’s family, Li Qingjun was definitely going to leave the formation to help those people.

She wouldn’t be Li Qingjun if she didn’t do that.

Two transformed demons had arrived at the crown prince’s residence. They just happened to be out of the range when Minghe activated the seven-star formation and were lucky enough to have escaped the annihilation. Right now, they were Donghuazi’s final resort.

They were a demon eagle and a demon wolf. Both had reached the Transformation Stage, and both looked like adult men. However, one had a very prominent aquiline nose that was an actual hook, while the other one still had fangs and a lot of grey hair on his face.

Hm… Putting on a human disguise was actually quite a challenging task for them, because no human beings could be that ugly…

It was easy to tell that both had only just made it to the Transformation Stage, but that was already quite impressive. If they were two junior cultivators of the Foundation Establishment Stage, with some cooperation, they would be able to turn Nanli upside down, not to mention the crown prince’s residence.

Luckily, like Night Wing, these two demons had not had any proper education. They wouldn’t be of much use if they were to confront an entire army or an Innate Stage warrior like Li Qinglin, but they would be more than enough to kidnap Li Qinglin’s family members from his house.

If Li Qinglin could be forced to withdraw his army, things might be turned around again.

There was some strategy to Donghuazi’s decision.

The two demons flew over the wall, but before they reached the inner courtyard, hundreds of hidden crossbows shot arrows at them.

The demon eagle smiled grimly. With a wave of his right hand, a gust of wind blew all the arrows away.

“I might’ve been in some trouble if there were 10,000 of them, but now, you might as well have just tickled me!”

He spread out his arms, revealing the shadows of a pair of giant wings. He then dove down into the residence.

The demon wolf suddenly picked up his speed, and the next second, he was outside the inner courtyard.

Both demons were known for their speed, but they didn’t expect to find someone even faster there.

Something dark flashed in the air, and two black feathers shot at their throats so fast that they made a tearing sound in the air.

The two demons stopped abruptly and were just in time to dodge the attack. Turning around, they saw Night Wing running toward them at lightning speed. Further behind, Li Qingjun was also running at top speed with her spear in one hand.

Qin Yi was right. Almost as soon as Li Qingjun saw the demons heading for the inner courtyard, Li Qingjun grabbed her spear and dashed off. Night Wing had no choice but to follow her. With her great speed, she ended up outrunning Li Qingjun.

“Princess Zhaoyang…” The demon wolf guffawed when he saw Li Qingjun behind Night Wing. “Would it help us more if we caught her?”

The demon eagle agreed. “Someone like Li Qinglin can always get a new wife, so what’s the point in catching his women? With Princess Zhaoyang, at least we can threaten that Qin Yi…”

Since they had reached an agreement, they forgot about the inner courtyard and turned toward Night Wing in unison.

Li Qingjun was easy to catch, but this girl was the real problem.

“She’s the snake that escaped the demon-refining formation…” Both demons looked rather serious now.

They knew what the demon-refining formation was like.

Donghuazi had left loopholes in the demon-transforming miasma, and all creatures that had been transformed into demons by that miasma would hear a calling in their heads when they reached perfection in the Intelligence Stage and were ready to create their own demon cores. They would then enter the demon-refining formation unknowingly and go through living hell there. The pain of having their demon cores ripped out of their bodies was indescribable.

Both of these two demons hadn’t been able to endure the pain and begged Donghuazi to spare their lives. They then made a demonic blood oath and surrendered to him. After that, they found opportunities and made breakthroughs into the Transformation Stage.

A lot of demons that had reached perfection in the Intelligence Stage didn’t even have any strength left to beg for their lives and had ended up dead in the formation. They had seen more cases than they could remember.

But there was one exception.

A little snake with wings had managed to reach the Transformation Stage despite the agony brought by the demon-refining formation. It then broke out of the formation, and before the astonished onlookers realized, it ran out of the temple and disappeared.

The late crown prince’s guards mentioned a fleeting dark shadow on the night he was assassinated, and everyone in the Eternal Temple knew who the killer was.

It was an advanced demon who had more tenacity than any of its peers and had made a breakthrough despite the excruciating pain.

They didn’t have time to dwell on their past. The next second, Night Wing was standing in front of them with her hands on her waist. She yelled “you ugly monsters!” before sticking out her tongue at them.

“Huh??” The two demons were baffled.

Wasn’t she supposed to be a terrifying, advanced demon?

Something was very out of place here.

Li Qingjun had also reached them by then and made a sarcastic comment. “You’ve all transformed into human shapes, but why is Night Wing so pretty while the two of you are so ugly? I suggest you go back to that demon-refining formation and work on your appearances again. This is quite humiliating.”

The two demons were infuriated.

Night Wing chimed in. “They’re no strangers to humiliation. Your Royal Highness, you have no idea how humble they were when they knelt down in front of Donghuazi and made their blood oaths. He could be their grandpa, tsk…”

The demon wolf couldn’t help but retort. “Haven’t you made a blood oath to Li Qinglin? Otherwise, why would he trust you?”

“It’s expired.” Night Wing grinned. “His Royal Highness was going to make Qin Yi my new master, so he ended our contract. Qin Yi never asked me to make any oath, so I’m a free demon now. Do you envy me?”

To be honest, they envied her a lot. No demon wanted to live under a blood oath. Not only did they have to work as slaves, but if the master died, they would die with them as well. Who would want that?!

Right now, there was a way out for them. Donghuazi was knee-deep in trouble now, so if they could bring Li Qingjun back, there was a great chance that Donghuazi would agree to terminate their contracts.

Both demons turned to Li Qingjun with ferocious looks on their faces.

Li Qingjun remained unperturbed. She flipped her wrist and pointed her spear at the demons.

She knew that she couldn’t outrun these demons, and it was impossible to lure them back into the formation now. Qin Yi’s efforts had turned out to be futile.

But she didn’t regret it.

If she hid selfishly in the formation while her sister-in-laws were in danger, she wouldn’t be Li Qingjun.

Night Wing heaved a sigh and gave up trying to buy time by talking nonsense.

The Eternal Temple had burst into flames out there, and no matter how foolish these two demons were, they wouldn’t let her stall them.

A battle was inevitable.

The look in Night Wing’s eyes suddenly turned ferocious. She flipped her hand around, and an eerie black flame burst into life.

Winged snakes were in charge of fire. They brought fear and terror and were ominous creatures.
