Chapter 23 – The Bento of Love in the Middle of the Night Part 2

“All right, thank you.”

After hanging up the phone, Xia Tong, who was standing next to her, asked in a low voice, “Jin Jie, isn’t this Editor-in-Chief Zhang of the Metropolitan Financial Daily your friend? Why do you want to give him 500,000?”

Zu Jin replied, “A friend of a friend. He did this favor for me and will bear the pressure from the top. Now that the board of directors have realized everything, they may have contacted people in the media industry to put some pressure on his superiors. If he doesn’t get this money, then how can he survive?”

“But I thought he would refuse the money.”

Zu Jin turned around and looked at her secretary. Xia Tong had been following her since she graduated from college. Five years had passed.

Many projects, including those that dealt with relationships, inevitably involved the use of money to handle any bribery.

She had explained to Xia Tong how these things worked.

She thought Xia Tong was already aware of the hidden rules in society, but she did not expect that she was still so naive up to now.

Today was a small battle, but tomorrow was an uphill war.

In order to prepare for tomorrow, it looked like she would have to work late today.

Zu Jin called Yan Lin and then went back to being busy.

It was early evening when the street lamps were beginning to turn on. From the tall windows, the bright lights lit up the city outside.

From Zu Jin’s office, the tallest business building in the city could be seen.

There was a big LED billboard on that building. She didn’t know which couple was about to enter the marriage hall, but the billboard suddenly flashed a giant heart with the name of the couple below.

Zu Jin was working through a busy period when she looked up and inadvertently saw it.

She was in a trance for a moment. Then, she shook her head and smiled before she continued with her busy work.

But after a while, there was suddenly a knocking in the office.

Xia Tong looked in and had a strange expression as she said “Jin Jie, there is someone here!”

“Who is it?”

Xia Tong smiled excitedly and made a gesture of invitation to the person behind her.

Zu Jin saw Yan Lin suddenly appear at the door of her office with a bento box in his left hand and a coat in the other hand.

He gave her a weak smile and waved to her. “Am I bothering you?”

Zu Jin was shocked for a moment. She stood up at once and asked, “What are you doing here?”

Xia Tong joked, “Of course my brother-in-law is here to give you a bento of love, but the rest of us don’t seem to have a share.”

Yan Lin turned to look at Xia Tong and he looked a little embarrassed. “Oh, I have ordered a midnight meal for everyone,” he explained with a soft voice. “It should be delivered soon.”

Xia Tong lost her mind. She clapped her hands excitedly. Afterwards, she thanked her brother-in-law and happily left the office. She seemed to report the good news to the employees who were working overtime outside.

As soon as Xia Tong left, the office became quiet.

Yan Lin put the bento down and handed her the coat.

“I didn’t mean to bother you, but the temperatures are low tonight, so I just… Here is the sweet potato porridge I cooked for you, and a piece of steamed fish.”

Zu Jin couldn’t help herself any longer. She went up to him with her arms out, and on her tippie toes, she went into his arms.

“Thank you, husband!”

They quietly hugged for a while before they separated. Then, Zu Jin sat down on the sofa and ate the midnight meal.

After that, she went back to her desk and was busy working again. In order to prevent Xia Tong and her other employees from noticing him when they came in to report things, Yan Lin packed up the bento and went to sit in the car first.

By the time Zu Jin finished her work, it was almost one o’clock in the morning.

After she went into the car and saw Yan Lin, she suddenly felt very apologetic.

“Don’t do that again. I’ll just ask the driver to take me back, and you have to get up early for meetings every morning.”

Yan Lin started the car. He gave a low chuckle and said, “You know I go to bed late and I stay up at home. There is nothing to do, so I came to pick you up. We can talk on the way back. You don’t have to feel apologetic towards me.”

“Who feels sorry for you…” Zu Jin’s lips curled and couldn’t control the smile she had on the inside.

In fact, Zu Jin understood that Yan Lin was worried about how she was working late when she was pregnant, so he came to see her.

But it didn’t seem like a pleasant thing to hear him say that he came to pick her up from work because she was pregnant.

That’s why he said what he said.

Zu Jin watched the dim street lights flickering outside the window. She finally felt warm and relaxed after all the extreme tension and hard work from this afternoon.
