༺ My House Has Become a Filming Set! – 1 ༻

Ever since I was a kid, I loved fishing. I enjoyed sashimi, sushi, and despite being in my vigorous years, I preferred dishes with fish over those with meat.

“You’re going to work on a deep-sea fishing boat?”

  “Yep.”

“…You do sometimes rush into things.”

Despite all my friends trying to dissuade me, I brushed them aside. After graduating from the Marine Science High School and acquiring the necessary certification, I went straight to board a deep-sea fishing vessel.

Fish, fishing, sashimi! That was my dream! My ideal!

  “Hey! Move quickly!”

…Damn it, I just remembered what my grandmother said. Dreams shouldn’t be recklessly pursued.

The sun was scorching hot, and every time a wave hit, I was automatically showered. I wasn’t the type whose skin turned dark under the sun, but rather the type that gets sunburned, which made it doubly hard for me compared to others.

Moreover, the work was so hard, if there hadn’t been sashimi for three meals a day, I would have quit long ago. No, I was even sick of sashimi now. I hated the sight of it.

But I had already boarded the ship. Sigh… How many months until I could disembark? I think it was about three months.

Only three more months in this hell and then I’m free.

Did I only experience hardships while on the deep-sea fishing boat? That wasn’t the case. I met people from various cultural backgrounds and learned new knowledge.

And, among them, there were always some strange ones. One guy was on the deep-sea fishing boat just for his YouTube vlog.

“Just once, okay? Yeonwoo, hey, Yeonwoo! I beg you, please. Please just appear once, huh?”

“Ah, no. There are plenty of other people!”

  “But you’re the best looking!”

He was a funny guy. What was even funnier was that he had adapted so well to the deep-sea fishing boat that he planned to stay on board for longer. Apparently, he would serve for three years and receive military exemption or something like that.

  Well, that wasn’t my concern.

After the hellish life ended, I immediately enlisted in the military as soon as I disembarked. It’s easier to do all the hard stuff at once.

  “We are!”

  “Beep!”

  “One!”

…Damn it, I just remembered what my grandmother said. Life requires rest periods too.

There was a reason why you could get a military exemption if you worked on a deep-sea fishing boat for three years. In other words, the deep-sea fishing boat and the military were on par with each other.

I escaped from one hell, only for another to start.

‘You make plans, but they’re all shitty plans. If that’s the case, don’t bother planning. Damn you.’

A friend casually said that to me a long time ago. I dismissed it as nonsense at the time, but now I had no choice but to admit it.

That friend was wise. Yes, I only make shitty plans. I’ve come to realize it now. And I made a resolution. I decided to give up on planning, following my wise friend’s advice.

“Corporal Kim Byunghun, what is that?”

“Uh, my brother is a beekeeper, he also sells honey online. Want to take a look?”

“Hmm, so this exists.”

“Yeah, I visited last time and it seemed easy? The bees just bring the honey, you collect it and put it in the extractor, and that’s it. I think I might become a beekeeper too after I’m discharged.”

  A beekeeper….

  ***

Lee Yeonwoo, after disembarking from the deep-sea fishing boat and immediately enlisting in the military, is now a beekeeper nearing his third year at the age of twenty-five.

…Damn it, I just remembered what my grandmother said. She told me to get a proper job.

A job has fixed working hours. In other words, if you work from home, there are no specific working hours.

This damn beekeeping had no end. And neither did the wasps.

Wasps don’t come at a particular time. In other words, I had to monitor them 24/7, 365 days a year.

The bodies of my beloved honey bees were scattered in front of the hive.

Lee Yeonwoo caught the wasps flying around him with an unusual dexterity, wielding a bug catcher in one hand.

“How dare you target my babies?”

Suddenly, it occurred to him that Uncle Cheolsoo had recently been eyeing his beehive. Yeonwoo started to have a foolish suspicion.

Could these be highly trained wasps sent by Uncle Cheolsoo?

He burst into laughter at such an absurd thought.

  ‘Enough, let’s have a drink.’

He headed straight to the old hole-in-the-wall bar in the neighborhood.

“Yeonwoo, you rascal, you should drink less!”

It’s been three years since he moved to the countryside, and he’s already close with the people of this village.

The villagers were delighted to have a young man in a village that was only inhabited by the elderly, and Yeonwoo, who had lost his parents at an early age and lived with his grandmother, also treated them comfortably.

Now, he might be treating them as substitutes for his deceased grandmother.

Yeonwoo cheekily retorted to Grandfather Beom, who was nagging at him.

“I told you to keep the beer in the fridge! How can I drink it when it’s lukewarm?”

“You shouldn’t be drinking in the first place, young man! What’s with drinking in the afternoon!”

Ignoring him, Yeonwoo popped open a can of beer and gulped it down.

  “Urgh.”

It wasn’t cool, but as the alcohol entered his body, his hatred for the wasps that had killed his bees seemed to fade a bit.

‘Well, the wasps must have had their reasons too.’

Sympathizing with the wasps’ predicament, he paid for his beer, then ambled along with the bug catcher in his left hand and a beer in his right. Beer was something he drank almost every day when he was on the fishing vessel. There was no way he would get drunk from just one can.

Even while he was sipping his beer, he swung his bug catcher whenever a wasp came into view, petted the neighborhood dogs he encountered along the way, and lived without a care in the world.

“Oh dear, Yeonwoo, where are you going?”

  It was Uncle Cheolsoo’s wife.

“Hello, ma’am. I’m just making a patrol round before heading home.”

  “A patrol? You’re not a cop.”

‘Well, cops don’t catch wasps, do they?’

Feeling too lazy to explain, Yeonwoo brushed it off with a vague ‘Well, yeah…’

“It’s a relief that you patrol around every day, Yeonwoo. Oh right, did you know that a film crew came to our village from Seoul?”

  “A film crew?”

“Yeah, they said they were famous actors or something… not a drama, but a variety show!”

  “A variety show?”

“They are filming ‘Living in the Countryside for Ten Days’ or something like that. Ho ho, now that celebrities have come and gone, our village will become famous too.”

Curiosity was piqued in Yeonwoo at the auntie’s hopeful words. He was normally indifferent to TV and internet, but the word ‘celebrity’ was a topic intriguing enough to stimulate his curiosity.

  “Which side is it?”

  “Huh?”

“Where they’re filming. I want to check it out.”

The aunt pointed towards the right fork in the road.

  “They say it’s that way.”

‘It’s in the same direction as my house.’

He moved, thinking he should peek at it on his way home.

“Yeonwoo! I made rolled omelet and stir-fried anchovies that you like. Come to our house for dinner later!”

  “Okay, thank you.”

He waved back to the aunt as she receded into the distance.

  ‘Ah, a wasp.’

Every time he caught a wasp buzzing around, he would celebrate with a sip of beer. Before he knew it, he could see the bottom of the can.

He decided he would savor the last gulp.

As he approached his house, he found a crowd of people. Before he could even think that the filming location was near his house, an elderly woman with a red roof yanked him in.

“Inseok, why are you just arriving now! Come on, get in there!”

  “…What?”

Pushed by the hands of the neighborhood people, he found himself unexpectedly at his own house.

And…there were countless strangers standing in his front yard. One of them noticed Yeonwoo and approached him.

“Ah, Mr. Yeonwoo. We were worried because we couldn’t contact you. Everyone-! The homeowner is here, let’s start filming again.”

What the… All the blinding lights, cameras and other filming equipment… What were they doing in his house without permission?

They said they were filming, and I came to watch, but it turns out it’s my house.

  Yeonwoo scowled as he spoke.

“What are you doing in someone else’s yard?”

“Excuse me? …Don’t you remember me?”

The man seemed a bit taken aback as he posed the question to Yeonwoo. Yeonwoo stared hard at the man’s face.

  He did seem familiar…

‘Hello. I came here from Seoul for a preliminary visit. What kind of place is this? Oh, I am this kind of person.’

‘Could we possibly stay at your place, Mr. Yeonwoo, during filming? It won’t be long, just about ten days.’

‘Thank you! Here is the contract…’

Memories of a few months ago flashed through his mind.

  “I am PD Han Taegu!”

He remembered responding kindly to the man’s questions, who was excited to see a city dweller after a long time and was slightly drunk.

He scrutinized Han Taegu PD’s face once more.

  “…You really don’t remember?”

It seemed like the last gulp of beer was saved just for this moment. After gulping down the beer, he grinded his teeth and responded.

  “Yes…, I remember now.”

At Yeonwoo’s reply, PD Han Taegu nodded with a bright smile.

“Then we will be in your care for a while!”

He watched the back of Han Taegu PD, who disappeared into his group after finishing what he had to say. He crushed the empty beer can with force.

Damn, the grandmother had warned him. Not to casually mingle with strangers.
