There was an eerie silence in the dorm for a few seconds.

“Fuck!” Qin Fang, who was the first to react, nearly jumped out of his seat when he thought of his obedient-as-a dog appearance just now.

“You playing us like this, was it fun for you?” The older two were also puzzled. Su Lin was usually too lazy to speak an extra word, but actually would make such a cheap childish joke.

  “Gang up on him! Go!”

  “……”

In the end, Su Lin was not ganged up on.

After all, the game still had to be played and the tests still had to be taken. As long as they played games and took tests, they had to hold Su Lin’s thigh.

The oldest two put away their luggage and left the dorm together.

A little after seven o’clock, Su Lin and Qin Fang went to the dining hall to eat. After coming back, he took a shower and sat on his bed, phone in hand.

It was WeChat’s add friend screen.

He looked at the “Deer OO” he had searched up. The profile picture was a cartoon rabbit against a white background. You could tell it was a girl’s WeChat at a glance.

  He hesitated for a while.

  He clicked [Add Contact].

Then he entered his name and sent it.

After all this, his heartbeat sped up and he instantly had a thin layer of sweat on his palms.

He didn’t exit out, going to scroll through his WeChat Moments. Every minute, he exited his Moments to see if she accepted.

  Ten minutes later, finally.

[Deer OO]: I accepted your friend verification request, now we can start chatting.

Su Lin ruffled his hair with a little bit of fidgetiness.

She really accepted, and he didn’t know what to say.

How do you say hello to a girl….

Without waiting for him to cough something out, the status changed to “The other person is typing”.

  Su Lin waited.

  Waited and waited.

  Waited for two whole minutes.

[Deer OO]: Sorry, I just arrived home and accepted you late. Senior Su, is this you? /question

[Deer OO]: What’s our…. Secret code?

  “……??” Secret code?

Su Lin thought about it, typing: French class?

She typed for a long time.

[Deer OO]: Oh, hi senior! I was afraid it was someone with the same name ^o^

…… So we had to use a secret code?

Su Lin lowered his eyes and smiled a little.

[Deer OO]: Did you come to me for something, senior?

  [Su Lin]: Mm.

[Su Lin]: It’s about your scholarship interview. The previous person had something to do and now I’m in charge, so I have to make an appointment to record. Are you free this weekend?

This time, the “The other party is typing” lasted for a minute.

  “……”

Why was she saying that was taking so long to type?

[Deer OO]: Yes~ But it has to be after 5 o’clock on Sunday afternoon, is that okay to you?

Su Lin counted. Seventeen words took a minute to type?

He hesitated. Without answering her question, he typed and asked her: Are you free to talk on WeChat right now?

He didn’t know how long he waited.

[Deer OO]: Sorry, senior! QAQ…. I just type slowly, I’m actually very free….

  “……”

Looking at this sentence, Su Lin imagined the expression she had if she said this.

  He couldn’t help but laugh.

He thought about it and gave her a suggestion: you can send voice messages1.

Afterwards, he saw the status at the top become “The other person is talking”.

  Unexpectedly…. So obedient.

  [Deer OO]: [Voice Message]

  Su Lin clicked on it.

—Hi, senior! I usually send voice messages to my dormmates but I was afraid you would think it was weird and didn’t send. Umm, I go back to school at four or five o’clock this Sunday afternoon, is that okay?”

Lu Yuanyuan’s side was quiet with no background noise, and her soft voice transmitted through the phone and clearly passed into his ears.

When she talked, she seemed to habitually add some intonation. The ending syllable of her last words would be slightly stretched out.

After listening to her voice, Su Lin could only move the phone away after a while.

Then he slowly touched his ear.

  Don’t know why but….

  It seemed a little tingly.

At precisely this time, the sound of water in the dorm stopped. Qin Fang walked to the bedside while wiping his hair, sat down and fished out his phone, “Let’s start, ah Lin ge?”

“Give me a few minutes.” Su Lin came back to his senses and quickly sent a message back to Lu Yuanyuan.

After she replied “OK”, he went through their chat history and felt it would be strange to continue the conversation.

He exited out of WeChat and opened the game, “Come on.”

Su Lin slept for four hours yesterday and didn’t rest during the day. After playing for more than an hour, he felt a bit unable to continue.

“I’m sleepy, you play by yourself.”

“Okay, okay, okay. I’ll wear headphones, you sleep.”

After lying down, he put on earplugs and an eye mask.

For some reason, his mind was completely filled with Lu Yuanyuan’s voice, but her appearance also surfaced in his mind. Closing his eyes, it was like she was appearing before him.

After waiting for a while longer, he still couldn’t sleep.

He took off the eye mask, fished out his phone from under the pillow and opened WeChat, and looked at their chat history again.

He also, conveniently, listened to her voice message again.

He bent his lips silently. After bringing down his phone, he long pressed the voice message.

  Then clicked [Favorites].

Translating this story lowkey gives me serotonin. I get happy translating it bc they’re so adorable haha

1 Nothing to do with the story but I’m convinced that my mother very rarely types on WeChat. I’m always seeing her sending voice messages and never actually physically typing. I hear from my other Chinese friends that their mothers are the same. I think it’s because the older generation prefers calling, meanwhile, I abhor calling. I put off ordering my senior portraits because I had to call the company and ended up procrastinating for three months….
