The quiz was one hour long.

Maybe because she did the homework assigned by Yan Chuan before, Lu Yuanyuan felt that the test questions weren’t difficult. Although she needed to think about the questions for a while and after she really answered it, she found that there wasn’t a single question she was unsure about.

After the one-hour test, there was still half an hour left in the class. Of course, Yan Chuan wouldn’t dismiss them early.

All the people sat back to their original seats one after another.

Lu Yuanyuan used to sit on Su Lin’s inner side. She basically sat in a corner, plus she looked small, so she guessed that people in class couldn’t see her too clearly.

And now, because it was too much trouble to switch back, Su Lin sat next to her after the exam, and so the usual position of the two had been swapped.

She sat next to the aisle for only half an hour, but she felt it was somewhat unbearable.

“Senior,” Lu Yuanyuan didn’t move her head, whispering to the person on her right hand side: “When you normally sit here, there are also this many people looking at you?”

  “……”

Su Lin paused for a moment and lifted his eyes to sweep a glance at the “so many people” she was talking about.

His tone was casual: “Well, they’re idle. I don’t care.”

“Oh….” Lu Yuanyuan nodded, “It just feels a little strange ah….”

The “ah” in her words was slightly dragged out. Her tone held  a little complaint, the last syllable soft and sticky.

Su Lin listened with an itchy heart.

Maybe it was because she just finished the test, but Lu Yuanyuan seemed to have little intention of concentrating on listening to the lesson. After talking to him, she held a pen and unconsciously wrote and doodled on her notebook.

He happened to look at her notebook.

  Black, very eye-catching, words.

  [Aiya, so annoyingg! o(^`)o]

  “……”

Su Lin, for a moment, almost laughed out loud.

He averted his eyes and pretended to cough twice before he could hide his laughter.

Lu Yuanyuan turned her head at the sound: “Senior, are you sick?”

  “No.”

Just when he finished, he didn’t know what went wrong but his throat was a little itchy. He turned his head and coughed twice.

Upon seeing this, Lu Yuanyuan suddenly pulled out her cell phone from the cubby and stealthily peeked under the table typing something.

Su Lin turned around and saw her on the Baidu search engine, poking the keyboard letter by letter to type, but he couldn’t see what she was searching for.

  After a few minutes.

“Look, senior!” Lu Yuanyuan’s lowered voice carried a bit of excitement.

She switched her phone to her right hand, turned the screen’s brightness up, and then moved it between them.

  Baidu: [Soy milk for coughing]

[Does soy milk stop coughing? -Experts answer online]

Q: Can I drink soy milk to cure coughs?

A: “Hello, drinking hot soy milk can cure coughs. Soy milk with rock sugar….”

  – Li xx Deputy Chief Physician x County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Lu Yuanyuan took back her phone and her big black eyes were completely earnest: “Senior, look. Soy milk can cure coughs, so drink some quickly.”

  Su Lin: “……”

  Su Lin was really convinced.

  For some unknown reason.

He drank another cup of free tasteless soy milk with bean residue from the school’s dining hall.

  Sunday morning.

Despite the fact that it wasn’t a school day, Lu Yuanyuan’s biological clock was still on time.

She sank into the soft bed, and stared at the beige ceiling for a while as her eyes went from misty to clear.

She didn’t know how long it had been, but she vaguely heard light footsteps and conversations outside of her room. She blinked and sat up from the bed.

She slipped on her slippers and went to the window to draw the curtains.

Because of her sensitivity to light, her grandparents specially gave her curtains that were thick and blocked out light.

The moment she pulled it open, the early morning sunlight poured into the room.

  Soft, not blinding.

Outside the window was the familiar scenery of the neighborhood. She obviously couldn’t see the birds, but her ears could hear their melodious but not annoying chirping.

When she looked at the time, she found that she had slept for nine hours and felt cozy all over.

She rubbed her long hair, stretched, washed up and left the room.

  —”Yuan Yuan’s awake?”

Lu Yuanyuan looked at her grandmother setting up the table, so she answered as she went over to her, “I’ll do it, Grandma. You sit down.”

Grandma didn’t say anything and sat down as she was told, smiling and narrowing her eyes, “We’re not waiting for your grandfather today. Let’s eat first.”

“Hmm?” Lu Yuanyuan looked at her, “Where did grandpa go?”

Grandma looked helpless, “Just went to your Grandpa Chen’s house to play chess.”

  “……”

Grandpa Chen was their neighbor who lived upstairs.

However, playing chess this early in the morning, Grandpa was really….

Lu Yuanyuan curled her lips, “So has Grandpa eaten? I’ll go and send him something if he hasn’t eaten.”

“Eat before you go.” Grandma nodded her head.

  “……”

After eating breakfast, Lu Yuanyuan helped Grandma wash the dishes and noticed that the usual place for boiling medicine was empty today.

She wondered, “Grandpa doesn’t have any patients that are coming for medicine today?”

Grandpa was a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. He didn’t want to be too burned out now that he was older, so he didn’t want to manage a store anymore. Nonetheless, Old Zhongyi1 Lu had gained a reputation, and there were still patients who had accumulated over the years that came to the house one by one to get treated.

“There’s one tomorrow. We’ll boil when the time comes.”

Hearing her grandmother’s words, Lu Yuanyuan nodded and bent her big eyes, “I have a school meeting to attend in the morning. Grandma, please tell grandpa for me that I’ll come back next week.”

After she finished, she hugged her grandmother from behind, and stood there for a while intimately.

Grandma’s smile deepened, “I know, be careful on the road.”

  “I know.”

She left the kitchen and was just changing her shoes to go out when her grandmother suddenly called out to her, “Yuan Yuan!”

Grandma came out with a little worry in her eyes: “Has your father call?”

  “……”

Lu Yuanyuan’s hand on the door handle still and she blinked, “Not yet….”

Grandma came over, frowning, “If he calls you and says something shameful, you come back and tell me and your grandpa.”

“Mm.” Lu Yuanyuan’s stiffness disappeared. She raised the corners of her lips to smile at the old woman, “Don’t worry, Grandma.”

  —

Lu Yuanyuan went out of the staircase and met all the elders she knew well along the way.

Grandma’s house was located near the suburbs, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. The quiet and tranquil atmosphere and the tree-lined environment was very suitable for retirement. Many people had bought houses for the older generation of their families in this community.

Leaving the neighborhood and walking to the subway station, it didn’t take long to get on line 2. She sat for half an hour, got off the train and walked for ten minutes, and arrived at the place.

In fact, there was no meeting. She went out today because of the previously arranged tutoring.

After taking the subway here, it took another ten minutes to find the place.

When they were discussing the schedule last time, she met a very beautiful middle-aged woman who was kind and classy.

Lu Yuanyuan pushed open the bedroom door and looked at the girl who turned her head. She couldn’t help but feel the power of genetics.

“Hello sister,” The girl bent her almond eyes. She had white and delicate skin, a pointed chin and a clever smile, “My name is Shu Tian.”

1 Zhongyi means traditional Chinese medicine doctor. It’s quite a mouthful so I’ve retained the pinyin.
