The screen automatically switched to her personal settings. Next to the level column was the title “Trainee Host” in brackets. As she clicked on it, she saw more details about how she could level up. It depended primarily on how many times she had broadcasted and the number of people who tuned in to her channel, and with a higher level, she could be able to use more features of the app.

Under “General Settings”, she could see that there was only one regular staff member who worked for the radio channel at the moment.

【Name: The playful ghost-child

Vengeful Ghost Level: 1.5 stars

Self-introduction: Play a game with me! Otherwise, you die! Haha

Personality: Playful

Status: Bound】

“Playful? More like a complete sadist!” Tang Tian shook her head and exited the settings page. The main screen of the app had the same background as her mobile phone wallpaper—a dark, blood-red wall. In the centre, the words “Midnight Tales of Horror” were written in bright crimson ink. There were some buttons at the bottom, and a column displaying the countdown until the next broadcast.

【167 hours 48 minutes left until the next broadcast.】

Tang Tian suppressed the urge to throw this mobile phone into oblivion.

Can’t this thing give me a break with the countdowns?!

She clicked the power button, and the screen turned blank.

For now, Tang Tian thought.

After the terrifying ordeal with the ghost-child, she had no more energy left to think about future missions. She tossed the mobile phone aside and lay down to sleep.

Even if the sky falls, I’ll deal with it…tomorrow…

She slept soundly until the next day.

During the next few days, Tang Tian tried to find jobs again. As she majored in Chinese Language and Literature, the only jobs suited for her in the Old City were office or secretarial jobs.

So, she still busied herself with sending off resumes and then waited for interview offers.

Soon, it was Sunday night again.

This time, Tang Tian mentally prepared herself much earlier. She sat up straight in her bedroom and stared at the mobile phone on the table.

She had always wondered how did the mobile phone function without a charging cable, until one day, when she absentmindedly placed it under the moonlight and realised that it began charging on its own. It reminded her of mystical creatures that absorbed the essence of the sun and moon in Chinese mythology.

There was still one minute left until twelve midnight. Abruptly, the mobile phone vibrated loudly. Blood-red words appeared on the screen.

【Are you ready? This is your first time as a trainee host. Good luck!】

It was followed by a string of smaller text that seemed to go on forever.

It’s a script, Tang Tian realised.

As there were only a few more seconds left until twelve midnight, Tang Tian hurriedly clicked on the app and put on her earphones.

Suddenly, she could hear music playing through the app.

It must be a default recording saved within this app, Tang Tian thought.

It was the same piece of music she had heard last week, which lasted for less than twenty seconds. The wailing ghosts and the eerie background music were all too familiar. As Tang Tian listened in silence in the dark bedroom, she could not help but tremble slightly at the thought of what was about to happen.

Soon, the music ended and was replaced by low static noise.

Tang Tian felt her throat tighten as she knew it was now her turn to speak. She lifted the phone and read the script. “Good evening, everyone. Welcome to the Midnight Tales of Horror channel. I am your trainee host for the night. My name is…Tang Tang.1This is purposely taken from the FL’s name Tang Tian, of which Tang means ‘sugar’ or indirectly, ‘sweet’. Tang Tang would literally mean sugar.” She stuttered a little while inwardly cursing the app for giving her a silly nickname.

“If you can hear us, it is the result of your great fortune and misfortune. For my dear audience who has heard our previous broadcast, it’s been a while! Tonight, this channel continues in hopes that all of you could accompany us on a new journey. Our channel aims to bring you stories based on real events, devoid of any untruth. So, share your anguish, your sadness, and your regrets with us. We will settle your unfinished business and bring peace to your unresolved hatred.”

“That’s the aim of our channel, we welcome anyone who wants to share their stories with us. We will start by sharing one true ghost story, then open the line for anyone who wants to share. Those who do will receive a little reward from us. We hope that it will help you achieve your desired happy ending. Now then, let me tell you a story about…” Tang Tian paused upon reading the two words that were highlighted with red on the screen, then finished weakly, “…ghost marriage.”

She waited for the next line to appear on the screen. But all of a sudden, it was as though the mobile phone had died. Nothing else appeared on the blank screen.

Realisation dawned upon Tang Tian and she widened her eyes. Underneath the low static sound transmitted through her earphones, she could almost hear her own heartbeat getting louder with each passing second.

What a disastrous first-time broadcast! Stupid phone! If you’re going to help me, at least keep up the effort until this ends!
