Chapter 7: This Woman is Stupid!(1)

Ruan-shi’s heart quivered as she raised her hand gently to her chest and asked dumbly, “That wound, is it from back then?”

Tang Song Nian nodded. “At that time, I also thought I was dead. Luckily, I met a distinguished person later, who saved my life.”

“Mother… How could she do that!” Tears filled in Ruan-shi eyes, choking with emotion

Just looking at the scar on his chest, anyone could imagine how badly he was hurt. On top of that, he was less than 15 years old. He should not have borne all those injuries and suffer those hardships.

“She said that being a stepmother is difficult, so she had to…” Tang Song Nian mumbled with an indifferent tone.

From three sons, two were not biological, while one was. And to send out one, she only chose the one she had given birth to.

Ruan-shi felt her heart grieving in pain; subconsciously, she hugged him more tightly.

On the bed, Xu Yun Yao’s eyes squinted. She was caught slightly unprepared by what she had just heard.

It turned out that the old man still had such a sad past! Clearly, she was his mother, but she treated him even worse than the two half-brothers.

‘Being a stepmother is a difficult task? Forgive her for not realizing such a complicated dilemma.’ (T/N: THIS phrase refers when she was still a concubine)

She only knew that for her own flesh and blood, she would be willing to put on battle clothes (t/n: fight in the harem) and carve out a good road for him. How could she choose to sacrifice her son for others?

At the thought of this, she wrinkled her nose with slight anger.

It was a pity that heaven didn’t give her that chance; Xu Yun Yao never gave birth to a son or a daughter until she died. The fact that she had no children was also a big obstacle to her success. Tang Song Nian, that ignorant old man, also used to verbally attack her.

On second thought, Tang Song Nian once attacked her with various kinds of pressure. She gritted her teeth in anger and annoyance. The injustices that were washed away just now came back again.

“Lord, Mo Yan came to report that it was a matter of urgency from Ma Butou.” Cui Wen rushed in.

“I’ll be right there!” Tang Song Nian’s depressed feelings were immediately swept away. He changed clothes and quickly left under Ruan-shi’s watch.

“My Lord, The Sun Family Main Manor in the 18th alley of West Street is caught on fire. Someone has been sent to put it out.” On the way out of the house, Ma Butou briefly reported the matter to Tang Song Nian.

“Try every means to control the fire and don’t let it spread!”

However, Xu Yun Yao naturally knew that Tang Song Nian had been hastily called away and heard Ruan-shi worried voice asking Cui Wen, “It’s getting dark now. What was the matter that made him so urgent?”

“It seems that a house on the west side of the city is on fire.” Cui Wen inquired about the news report.

“Caught on fire?” Ruah-shi was obviously shocked, and her tone was even more worried. “I just hope those skilled personnel will not be hurt.”

Tang Song Nian did not return for a long time. Ruan-shi’s heart was worried about her husband, having trouble sleeping. However, Xu Yun Yao was so young that she soon fell asleep.

When Tang Song Nian hurried to the scene, the fire had already abated. The surrounding people and the county government’s employees were all put into fighting the fire.

Nearly half an hour later, the fire was completely extinguished.

Tang Song Nian’s face was dusty. Yet, he carelessly wiped it and hurried into the main building of Sun Manor, the place where the fire broke out, with Ma Butuo.

When he walked past, he saw at a glance that the two bodies on the ground had already been burnt, so much so that their original identities could not be discerned anymore. Furthermore, the thin body even had a knife in his chest.

“My Lord, after a preliminary autopsy, neither the man nor the woman was killed by fire, and the bodies were burned after death. The man was also hit by a heavy object on the back of his head, but the real cause of death was a knife wound on his chest.” The post-mortem examiner, who had hurried over for a long time, simply checked for a moment and reported back.

Tang Song Nian’s brows knitted together

‘I thought it was just an accident. I never imagined it would be a murder!’

After a preliminary interrogation, it was finally confirmed that the deceased was the owner Sun Youcai and his wife Tian-shi.

He paced again, entered the badly burned main house, and carefully scrutinized the corpse again.

For a moment, he picked up a piece of broken tile in the corner, gently poked at the black thing covered on it, frowned, sniffed, and looked at it again. Indeed as expected, he found several pieces of such broken glass, all of which were stained with the same thing.

“Come and see, what is this?”

“The smell seems familiar, but I can’t put my finger on it.” Ma Butuo thought for a moment, shaking his head.

However, Shen Ming was thoughtful. He rummaged around the room for a moment, saying, “My lord, it must have been on the glass.”

Tang Song Nian looked over and saw him holding palm-sized, arc-shaped tiles. On the glass was a half-burnt, half-intact pickled vegetable leaf.

Ma Butuo quickly walked over and took the pickled vegetable leaf and sniffed, “My lord, this is indeed the smell.”

“The wound on Sun Youcai’s head was also stained with it.” Wu Zuo suddenly reminded a matter, and spoke in a hurried.

“Maybe it was this jar of pickled vegetables that broke Sun Youcai’s head?” Ma Butuo  was surprised.

Tang Song Nian did not answer the question, but there was also such speculation in his heart.

“My lord, my lord, come and see!” All of a sudden, an official shouted from outside.

Tang Song Nian hurried away and found a young boy of about six or seven years old lying on the ground near a well far from the main house.

“My lord, he is in a coma.” An official picked up the child.
