243. A Way Found

Luo Feng, after working flat out for a whole day, came to the conclusion that the pill could only deaden the poison. It couldn’t detoxify the poison. Everybody was depressed by the news. Yuxing Tianrui, however, composed himself after hearing it. Everybody walked out of the house where Du Chuxuan was. They stood in the yard, waiting for Yuxing Tianrui’s instructions.

“The day I entrusted him to you guys, I said that he would be the only one you should serve. Now I have no intention to punish you for failing to protect him, for I was the one who should’ve taken on that responsibility. I want every member of Sect Luo to focus on finding the antidote, except for those who are needed in the capital!

“I want every bit of information which might lead to the discovery of a cure delivered to me at all costs, no matter how unlikely it sounds. I, Yuxing Tianrui, thank you guys in advance.” With that Yuxing Tianrui folded his hands in front of his chest and bowed deeply to the others. Alarmed, all the others took a step backward involuntarily.

“You don’t have to do this, Your Highness. We exist to serve you. We’ve all seen what you’ve been doing for him, and we’ve all long since acknowledged you as our real master. It’s our bounden duty to find the antidote.” Everybody promptly dropped to their knees and made a promise, but they also knew that the ratio of success was very low.

Luo Feng who had looked it up in all the medical books he had was sitting in his room in a daze when he suddenly spotted a shabby pad of jottings beside his hand. He couldn’t help but pick it up to read it. Inadvertently, he saw a line of small words written in an inconspicuous corner. The ink had faded somewhat due to its many years’ standing.

But at the sight of the contents, he jumped up and abruptly rushed outside. “Your Highness! Your Highness! I think I might have found a way! I found a way!”

The others were still standing in the yard. On hearing his voice, they subconsciously looked in his direction. Luo Feng, too excited to explain, raised the book in his hand. “I got this when buying books years ago. Since it’s all about rare diseases difficult to cure, I never paid much regard for it.”

After hearing his words, Yuxing Tianrui felt a rush of hope. He subconsciously reached out his hand to take the book, but his hand paused halfway, for he was worried that it might be a disappointment. Luo Feng, uninterested in what Yuxing Tianrui was thinking, earnestly began to read those words.

“A 1000-year-old snowdrop from Mount Tianshan and a 1000-year-old ganoderma, mixed with a hundred 100-year-old ginsengs, are a potent tonic which can deaden poison of hotness. Any poison can be detoxified by fighting poison with poison.” As he slowly read those words, everybody lapsed into silence. They first heard the sound of hope and thought that the problem was solved, but unexpectedly, the most difficult part had only just begun.

“A 1000-year-old snowdrop can only be found in those bottomless caves at the top of Mount Tianshan, right? The problem is nobody knows which one of those caves it grows in. How are we supposed to find it?”

“I heard that a snowdrop must be ingested immediately after it’s plucked to ensure its efficacy. If its active ingredients spread, nobody can withstand the potency,” said another man, sounding even more anxious. That was too difficult to find.

Yuxing Tianrui, hearing their discussion, fell silent. Naturally, he had heard about the snowdrops growing on Mount Tianshan before. In fact, he knew more about the plants than most people did. It was a piece of information known only to the imperial clan. There had been rumors since ancient times that snowdrops found on Mount Tianshan could bring people back from the dead!

He turned his head and looked in the direction of the house. If this was really the only way, he would do it. Even if he had to carry Du Chuxuan to the top of Mount Tianshan step by step, he would do it. How could he watch his loved one die in front of his eyes? But first he had to subjugate Turk!

“Say no more. Every member of Sect Luo is to do everything within their power to help those in the capital city complete the mission assigned by Du Chuxuan. After that, I want you to purchase every 100-year-old ginseng and 1000-year-old ganoderma you can find in the market, whatever the cost!”

With that, Yuxing Tianrui turned around and left, Luo Feng following in his wake. He instructed Ada to stand guard outside the house, then walked into the study with Luo Feng alone. “Tell me, what are the odds that this will work?” He knew something about detoxifying poison, and he suspected that taking the rare drug would not be enough.

Luo Feng was surprised that Yuxing Tianrui had caught on so soon. He took a deep breath and said, “You’re right, Your Highness. Before the administration of the medication, he needs me or Luo Qing to help him expel his poisoned blood from his body. The snowdrop will expel the remainder of the poison. As for the ginseng and the ganoderma, they’re life-saving tonics.”

Yuxing Tianrui didn’t need Luo Feng to expound. The poison had been slowly spreading. The longer they dawdled, the greater danger Du Chuxuan was in, and the more of his blood they would have to expel. Du Chuxuan might not live long enough to go to Mount Tianshan with him.

“You need to think this through, Your Highness. If we adopt this method, we’ll have to cut his dose of the drug meant to deaden the poison, because every medication has side effects. Every time the poison kicks in, he’ll have to fight the pain with his willpower. Also, there are risks involved in the method. The snowdrop alone—”

“I want him to live!” Yuxing Tianrui roared without warning, blue veins flickering horribly in his neck from his efforts to subdue his anger, his eyes scarily red. Luo Feng was under great pressure. He slumped to his knees, wordless.

Yuxing Tianrui realized that he had lost his cool. He took a few deep breaths to compose himself. “You may rise. By finding this method, you’ve rendered me meritorious service. The matter of Noble Lady Xiao has been settled, which means there’s no need for Luo Qing to stay in the capital anymore. Tell him to come here as quick as possible. Before his arrival, you’re the only one I can rely on to tend Ah Xuan.”

“Your Highness may rest assured that I’ll do everything within my power to treat his condition,” Luo Feng said with his hands folded in front of his chest and then left.

Once again, Yuxing Tianrui was alone in the room. He looked at his palm and felt a pang of dejection slowly rising in him. “It will work. Trust me.” He kept murmuring those words repeatedly like a helpless child having trouble finding his home.

Outside the door, Du Chuxuan lowered his hand, feeling a sense of loss. He gave Luo Feng a significant look and then left with him. Ada, naturally, made no remarks. What was going on between the crown prince and his significant other was becoming too complicated.

“Master, His Highness–”

“Don’t tell anyone I’ve found out about it. Since this is what he wants, let’s give it a try. I’ve been on borrowed time, anyway,” Du Chuxuan smiled, looking quite relaxed.
