“Lu Yu, one hundred and twenty-seven marks.”

“Here.”

“Your results dropped this time. Put more effort into your next examination. Check your answers and avoid wasting precious marks. Do you understand?”

“Yes, miss.”

“Chen Mu, one hundred and fifty marks!” A smile appeared on Ms. Liang’s face. Her tone was also much friendlier and gentler.

“Here.” Under everyone’s scrutiny, Chen Mu walked up the stage and retrieved his test paper.

“Your results are consistent, please keep up the good work. Among your language subjects, if you can improve your English by another 10 marks, you can aim for Royal Capital University or even Hua Tsing University1. Time to strengthen yourself for that,” Ms. Liang said.

“I will. Thank you, miss.” Chen Mu emotionlessly returned to his seat after retrieving his test paper.

It was his third year in senior high, and it had been three years since he started scoring full marks for his mathematics exams without any exception. For other people, the reason why they obtained a hundred and five marks was that they were only capable of getting a hundred and five marks.

It was different from Chen Mu as his paper was maxed out at a hundred and fifty marks. To Chen Mu, mathematics was a piece of cake.

Not to mention, Chen Mu had been crowned Year 3 Senior (9)’s Little Natural Sciences Prince for being quite a looker. He would occasionally receive love letters from female students that were in other classes.

“Damn it, Chen Mu is a monster! He scored full marks again! Give me a break!” one of his classmates exclaimed in jealousy.

“He always gets full marks. Still not used to it yet?” said the classmate’s deskmate.

“We’re in the same class, how is it that we’re so different?!” replied the same classmate in dissatisfaction.

“Instead of your results, I think the gap between your looks is far greater.” His deskmate mercilessly threw a jab at him.

From an academic perspective, Chen Mu was already considered a successful person. In everyone’s eyes, he was strolling on the highway of life. Nevertheless, at this time, Chen Mu was supporting the back of his head with his hand as he looked out into the distance through the window. He seemed to be contemplating the pointlessness of his life.

At a glance, in the visible future, it was very certain that Chen Mu would enroll in one of the 985 or 211 Project Institutions. His main course of study was basically confirmed as well; it would be something related to computer or network engineering. Evidently, he wanted to become a programmer as well. The reason was simple—the job paid well. Chen Mu did not mind exchanging his life for money, and maybe even losing all his hair to get himself a house, a car, and a mediocre wife. He did not mind living like that for the rest of his life.

Chen Mu excelled in his studies and also had a pretty face. It seemed like he was winning at life. However, because of how poor his family was, his choices were limited.

His father suffered from liver disease and had to stay home a lot. On the other hand, his mother earned a meager salary as a cashier at a supermarket. Having to depend on a single person’s salary to feed the family, it was devastating.

If Chen Mu had not consistently remained as the top student of his year each time, as well as gotten his school to waive a massive amount of the tuition fee for him, finishing high school might have ended up unknown to him.

When the time came, he would surely have to take up a student loan in order to attend university. He would end up in massive debt amounting to tens of thousands of yuan. After his graduation, he would have to work overtime at some internet company to pay off his student loans.

Nevertheless, what was most important right was that Chen Mu had a younger sister who recently became addicted to a game called League of Legends.

It broke Chen Mu’s heart. However, he kept it from their parents to avoid burdening them even further.

Chen Mu used to have a sister complex. His younger sister was a beautiful girl that had a sweet voice, and she used to pass her examinations with flying colors. However, for unknown reasons, the older she got, the worse her studies became. It was as though she slowly lost focus on studying over time.

Chen Mu felt a headache creep into his mind. His path had been decided, and his life was boring. Each day, he would burn the midnight oil. He was still young; what was such fatigue to him? Much wearier and longer years awaited him in the future.

How Chen Mu wished that he could take a rest. He wished that he could become a salted fish1 and read novels all day long. To him, that was life’s best pleasure.

Chen Mu really wished that he could start earning money quicker. It was unfortunate that he could only start working and saving money after another five years. What a long and tedious journey.

Furthermore, what was he going to do after he made his way to postgraduate studies? Should he continue studying? If he did, it would mean another two years of studying. Summing it up to seven years, there was a chance that it meant he would miss out on a lot of things.

“Ding! Host discovered. The Unkillable Demon King System is binding to the host…”

The sudden voice gave Chen Mu a shock. What in the world?

Chen Mu was completely flabbergasted. ‘Now, even a system has appeared. Think I never read online novels?’

Chen Mu was a person who understood the importance of striking a balance between work and play. Whenever he achieved his targeted scores in any subject, he would reward himself with a congratulatory hour to read online novels. Therefore, he knew what systems were.

‘The name of this system, the Unkillable Demon King System, sounds a bit ruthless to me. It can’t be that it’s supposed to make me some demon king that’s going to destroy worlds?

‘What should I do? Should I accept it? What if I’m being asked to destroy the world for real? And what if the system destroys me if I reject it?’

Chen Mu’s head was still churning with nonsensical fantasies when the voice in his head sounded again.

“The Unkillable Demon King System has successfully bound to the host. System is activating… System has been successfully activated. Welcome, Host. Please accept the binding prompt.”

“I accept.” Chen Mu had no idea what the binding prompt was. Nevertheless, rejecting it did not seem like an option. Rumors had it that systems were good things.

“Do you want to change your current life?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want to earn money?”

“Damn it, what kind of question is that? I want to earn money so much that I’m going nuts.” To Chen Mu, it sounded like the stupidest question in the world—was there anyone who could bear parting with money if they wanted to survive in the world at all?

A man without money was not a man at all. So what if Chen Mu’s results were good? Was it not all for naught if he could not pay his medical bills?

“Are you willing to remain single for the sake of your mission?”

“I refuse,” Chen Mu expressed his rejection. He thought, ‘With such a handsome face, do you really think I would’ve maintained being single if weren’t for my high standards? Who knows how long your mission might take? What happens if I end up having to be alone for the rest of my life?

‘Don’t systems usually help their hosts flirt with girls? Is mine broken or something?’

“I apologize, I will now extract all of your newfound powers and search for a new host. There is nothing to worry about. After extraction, it will only take you three years to awaken from a coma. It won’t affect you much.”

“Fine, I’ll take it. Tell me about the mission. I’ll do it even if I have to destroy the world,” Chen Mu said solemnly. ‘I’ll turn into a vegetable instantly if I reject it? What kind of operation is it?

‘Please, I never asked you to come to me. Sigh, you’re the one who messed up.’

“That’s more like it, I’m the Unkillable Demon King System. The host must become the Unkillable Demon King in League of Legends. Let the world fear you, make professional players tremble at your feet, strive to conquer and become the world’s strongest—claim the Triple Crown!” The system blurted out a line typically found in Eighth-grader Syndrome1 plot devices.

“…”

“I give up. Go ahead and extract all my powers. I expected more when I heard the cool name, the Unkillable Demon King System. I wasn’t expecting it to be a gaming system. There’s no future in it. I refuse.” Chen Mu felt like he had been trolled.

If Chen Mu worked harder on his own, he would be able to make his way to Royal Capital University, one of the top fifty elite universities in the world. Why would he pursue gaming for his future career? What a nonsensical system.

“Do not be so hasty to reject the offer. This system has sought you out from among ten billion people on this planet. Without a doubt, you’re a League of Legends prodigy. Yet, you’re obsessed with your studies and thus, indulge yourself in dishonest work. I am here to get you back on the right track,” the System said nonchalantly.

“Being obsessed with my studies is considered being dishonest; gaming is the right path. You’re spouting trash in a serious tone of voice. If my younger sister wasn’t addicted to games, maybe I’d believe you,” Chen Mu replied.

“After you complete your assignments, you’ll be rewarded with enough points to heal your illnesses. You’ll be able to cure your father’s liver disease and make him stronger than normal humans,” stated the System.

“Is… Is that true?” Chen Mu was hesitant. The disease that plagued his father was the source of pain for his entire family. Previously, his father used to work as a university lecturer when he was still healthy. He used to earn a handsome salary that was complete with five insurances and one fund1. Moreover, he used to have the added benefits of winter and summer holidays. Life was very pleasant back then.

His mother was an intellectual too. She used to work as an accountant in a small company. Nevertheless, their wholesome family had been utterly destroyed by his father’s illness. To treat his illness, they not only used up all of their savings, but they also found themselves in debt of about two hundred thousand yuan. It was apt to say that his father’s illness had wiped them out.

To take care of his father, Chen Mu’s mother had no choice but to resign from her company and work as a cashier in a nearby supermarket.

At the same time, she would also take up private accounting gigs to pay for some of the household expenses. However, despite doing so, they never had enough money to spend because of the medical bills.

His mother’s salary was low, and there was no space for further self-improvement in her job. She did it only to take good care of his father. Due to all this, Chen Mu’s father always thought of himself as a burden to the family, and he was often unhappy.

Now, a system had popped up and told Chen Mu that it could heal his father’s illness. To Chen Mu, nothing was more important than his family’s health; forget about Royal Capital University and Hua Tsing University.

Therefore, without any more hesitation, Chen Mu decided to accept the System’s mission.

“How much do I have to do to cure my dad?” asked Chen Mu.

“Based on system calculations, the system thinks that the host will have to become the world champion at least once to collect enough points.” The System’s answer gave Chen Mu some sort of an estimate.

“What does staying single mean?” Chen Mu continued to ask. He could not allow the old Chen bloodline to run dry now, could he?

“The host’s mission is completed the moment he obtains the Triple Crown. After that, the host may choose to do as he wishes,” explained the System.

“What’s this Triple Crown?” Chen Mu asked. Did it mean becoming the champion of three championships or what?

“Three Summoner’s Cup. To become the world champion, it should take you at least three years. The last host spent four years trying to complete his mission. He intended to strive for the Quadruple Crown. However, he was trolled by his teammates and that caused his inevitable defeat. As a result, his points were deducted, and the System was removed from his body before it came to this world in search of a new host.”

“Then, what? Did that person die?” asked Chen Mu.

“No. If the mission has been accomplished, extraction of the System from the host’s body will not cause any harm,” answered the System.

“Oh, I understand now. So, I have to remain single for three years? That’s it?” Chen Mu thought it was still plausible, he would remain single until his sophomore years. It was not that bad.

“No, the host will receive strict training from the System to become the Unkillable Demon King. The training is not limited to gaming prowess but includes professionalism, sportsmanship, and morality. The host must become a respectable character,” said the System.

“It’s just gaming, how professional does one have to be? You’re adorable, are you sure it won’t become some sort of addiction?” As a god-like figure among the high-flyers, if there was one thing that had been ingrained in Chen Mu’s mind throughout years of his education, it was that gaming was not something he should involve himself in. Trifling with games could mean destroying one’s determination to strive for progress.

“Please do not belittle games. In the future, it will become an Olympic event recognized by all countries. Your planet is progressing slowly. The last host’s annual income exceeded ten million U.S. dollars. Please don’t worry about your future, sir,” said the System.

“Oh? Ten million? U.S. dollars? Tsk, tsk, tsk. That good, eh? Alright, then I’ll play this game out for sure! From today onward, my mantra will be, ‘I am the man who will become the king of games!” said Chen Mu.

“Yu-Gi-Oh1 is from another dimension. It’s a card game. Please get your facts straight.” The System stopped him immediately.

“It’s alright, it isn’t a big problem. Speaking of which, don’t systems usually come with benefits?” Chen Mu asked.

“Yes, but there’s another question you have to answer. Before you win your first world championship, you’ll have to fulfill each system requirement and dedicate your time and hard work into it. Are you capable of that?” the System asked.

“I can.” In Chen Mu’s mind, there was nothing to fear. For a reward worth twenty thousand, he would willingly study with all his effort for a year. Hence, what was beating a little game to him?
