Iron Powder and Spellcasters

Chapter 106: execution

   Chapter 106 Execution

After a night of fierce fighting, the corridors near the gun emplacements on the west side are now full of corpses, some from Veneta and some from Tanirians.

If it wasn't for the Veneta who brought the leftover gunpowder back to the barracks every day, the losses last night would only have been worse.

After dawn, the Veneta began to clean the battlefield and collect the remains of their comrades.

Winters and Taylor, who hurriedly dealt with their wounds, immediately returned to the West-Fourth Artillery Group.

Winters had a creepy wound on his forehead, which was barely sewn up with black cotton thread. If the injury was two inches further down, Winters would not be able to keep his right eye.

Taylor's stab wound was on the top of his head, and he had to shave his hair completely for the stitches.

But they are all lucky because they are still alive.

Bubba was lying in front of them, the corpse had stiffened. The dilated eyes stared at the sky absentmindedly, and the mouth was long and big, as if it was still shouting.

Nearly the right half of his neck was smashed, and a lead shot from a heavy musket killed him. In addition to this fatal gunshot wound, there were more than a dozen other large and small wounds on his body.

He fought with wounds until a buckshot killed him.

At the last moment of his life, Bubba was still clutching his halberd. The grip was so strong that Tyler couldn't separate his hand from the halberd.

Winters stood silently behind Tyler. In the last scene in his memory, many enemies rushed towards him, and suddenly he was hit hard with a warhammer on the head, and blood blurred his vision. Bubba snarled and swung his halberd to block the enemy, while Tyler and Wake dragged themselves farther and farther away from Bubba.

He couldn't remember what happened after   . The hit on the head almost made him faint, blurring his consciousness.

In the melee at the artillery position, the Tanirian shooters immediately noticed the Veneta officer who was charging at the forefront.

Three crossbows quickly aimed at Winters, two crossbowmen missed, but the third one succeeded.

A stubby iron crossbow hit Winters in front of the door, knocking him to the ground.

If not for the helmet, Winters would have been shot on the spot.

Even Taylor and others thought Warrant Officer Montagne was shot to death, but when they recovered the "corpse", they found that Warrant Officer was still angry. Although the crossbow arrow penetrated the helmet, it could not go any further.

During the    melee, the surviving soldiers fought desperately to protect the confused Winters, and Bubba was killed in the process.

If Bubba hadn't stayed behind to block the Tanirian soldiers, Tyler and Wake would never have had the chance to drag Winters away.

"That's how he died," Winters thought sadly. "Before he died, he ate only half a loaf of white bread, and drank a little beef soup. He said he was happy to eat white bread, and then he died."

Death for the country, glorious and great, maybe the messenger will tell Bubba's parents so. But Winters knew that Bubba didn't die for Veneta at all, he died of the inflated ambitions of a handful of careerists.

Those people brought him from his hometown to this island with a piece of rough bread, and then let him die here.

"He's not yet twenty, he's only eaten white bread once..."

"Isn't that what you want?" Old Taylor closed Bubba's eyes with trembling hands: "You give Bubba white bread and Bubba meat, isn't that what you want? Isn't that what you want him to die for? Is there a war?"

   Winters did not answer.

"Is it?" Taylor's emotions suddenly became agitated, he turned around and grabbed Winters' arm, looked into Winters' eyes angrily and asked, "Is it true or not?"

"no."

Old Taylor seemed to have aged by a dozen years. His anger dissipated, leaving only endless emptiness. He murmured, "That stupid boy Bubba didn't die in vain... He didn't die in vain..."

Winters was silent for a long time, then whispered: "No, he just died in vain. If it wasn't for the ambition of some people, he could not have died, and Dan could not have died, and many people could have not died. Neither do we Here and the Tanirians are fighting for their lives."

"When the emperor was still alive, I ate the rations. I have already seen through it for more than 40 years. The life of a big-headed soldier is the most contemptible thing in the world. Bubba's life, my life, both, no The big men see us as human beings." Old Taylor carefully groomed Bubba, turned his back to Winters and said, "The big bosses are not afraid of death, they are just afraid of dying in vain. Bubba is not for the big men above, he is for you. Fighting with Tani. If you're not taking advantage of him, he's worth it..."

Tyler covered the wound on Bubba's neck with his collar, stood up, looked into Winters' eyes, and said seriously, "Warrant Officer Montagne, you have a magic... Willing to die magic. I've only seen it in one person before you, and that was Ned Smith. Please don't abuse this magic, remember your kindness now, when you're a big man , don't let us die in vain."

  …

  …

The Tanirians raided three of the eight artillery positions during the night, crucifying two half-guns.

The artillery of the West-2 and West-3 artillery groups were all nailed to death, and all the officers and sentries were killed in action. Due to Winters' counterattack, most of the heavy artillery in the rear of the West-Fourth Artillery Group were kept.

After the reinforcements from the rear arrived, they quickly repelled the attackers on the west-four artillery positions, and the twenty or so Tanirian soldiers who did not escape were all captured and captured.

The most bizarre thing about this raid is that the sentries in the other two positions failed to raise any alarms.

The post-war survey proved that the Sentinels did resist fiercely, but no one heard any abnormal noises from those two positions. The same is true for the Montagne squad in the west-four battery and the Socorro squad in the west-one battery.

Rumours arose in the barracks, and the soldiers privately said that the city's Tanir sacrificed six children to the devil in exchange for some kind of evil law, which could kill people silently in the dark night.

Layton was furious when he learned about this, and the furious Layton personally tortured the captured prisoners.

According to the confession of the captives, they did not attack from the city gate. Some sailors in the city had an idea to use the pulley block technology of large warships into small boats to the city wall. They built a set of temporary lifts with pulleys and wooden boards, and quietly put soldiers off the city wall from the corner of the west city wall.

According to the prisoners, they first attacked the West-3rd Artillery Group. When they were about to attack the West-Second Artillery Group, the West-4th Artillery Group sounded the alarm.

Captain Hernan, who led the night raiding force, in order to destroy one more set of artillery pieces, took the risk of splitting half of his manpower back to attack the West-Fourth Artillery Group, and led his team to attack the West-Second Artillery Group.

But no matter how Layton tortured the captured Tanirian soldiers, they couldn't tell exactly how he managed to silently raid the Veneta position.

On the night of the night attack, not only the Veneta could hear nothing, but also the Tanirians who attacked. Footsteps, shouts, weapons clashing, nothing could be heard.

In the hand-to-hand combat, their ears used to be full of screams and shouts of killing, but this time they could only see others open their mouths and couldn't hear others.

All the prisoners confessed that they could only hear their own voices during the night raid, and all they heard were the voices that sounded like their own voices after covering their ears.

According to the captives, Captain Hernan knows a kind of black magic. As long as he wants, he can deprive other people within a few dozen meters of hearing.

Only one of the captives recalled that Captain Hernan had a masked guard next to him. The masked guard did not fight, but no one thought it was strange because he was a bodyguard.

But that captive has always been Hernan's subordinate. He had never seen this mysterious masked guard by Hernan's side before tonight, and he had never heard of Hernan's black magic before tonight.

In addition, there is no valuable information to ask.

Unexplainably lost two officers, more than 60 soldiers and 28 cannons. The furious Roster Leighton ignored the dissuasion of other officers and vowed to use the most cruel way to execute all the prisoners in front of the defenders.

But when Layton decides to be reckless, nothing can stop him.

The Tanirian soldiers on the city wall watched with trepidation as the Veneta people prepared for the execution: the soldiers moved dozens of logs more than two meters long to the front of the position, and the carpenter began to sharpen the moved wood.

The shackled Tanirians were brought to the front of the city walls, many of whom had been tortured to the point of death.

After being pinned to the ground, the captives immediately understood their tragic fate. They begged, howled, and prayed, but the executioners were unmoved.

The executioner inserted a sharpened stake into the [monthly worker] door of the captive prisoner, who let out a scream that would give the bravest nightmares.

The other executioner behind the captive raised a large wooden pole with both hands and struck down with all his strength, and the stake was nailed into the human body at once.

Death on the spot is already a relief for the captives, and the undead captives will have to go through even more terrifying torture.

The executioner then lifted the stake and inserted it into the clearing in front of the city wall. Under the body's own weight, the stake continues to be inserted into the body little by little.

The tortured will die quickly, but the stake will not stop, and eventually the wooden tip will come out from the captive's mouth and neck, and the captive's body will be worn on it.

Twenty wooden stakes were placed there in a row, and the prisoners died tragically under the watchful eyes of the defenders.

Witnessing this infernal cruelty makes even the most numb person tremble.

Not only the Tanirians on the city walls suffered great mental torture, but even the Veneta soldiers were shocked.

The military priest Leonard even said bluntly to Layton: "General Layton, you will go to hell!"

"Huh, as long as William Kidd goes down first." Layton dismissed the contempt from the clergy.

Even Andrea, who had no empathy, couldn't bear to see such a scene, and whispered to Winters: "General Layton has done something a little too much. If you want to kill, you will kill, why do you do this..."

"No, Layton didn't 'kill' them, Layton 'executed' them. It wasn't aimless tyranny, it was a **** show,"    Winters replied with a deadpan expression.

"You...will only make the Tanirians on the city walls more tenacious..." Antonio sighed.

"Maybe so," Layton said nonchalantly, "but I also imprinted fear into their souls."

Amid the crow's song, the war is falling hopelessly in a more savage, cruel, and **** direction.

In the past, sometimes when I was tired when I got home, I would go to bed first, then get up to write. This is not very good. I adjust my work and rest, I must go to bed before one o’clock, and I will post more and less.
