6 – Devil King’s Date?

When I woke up, I was in a dream. The surrounding scene shimmered with a violet hue. It’s the dream world, created by the succubus.

Beyond the violet-shimmering space, someone was approaching. A woman wearing a black dress like the void of the night sky, with purple hair reminiscent of the remnants of the night sky. It was Scarlett.

Scarlett lightly covered her lips with her hand, chuckled and spoke.

“Did you sleep well, Rain?”

“Well, it seems like thanks to you, I’m sleeping well.”

“Rain’s body is laid in my room for now.”

“…Sorry for causing trouble.”

“It’s fine. After all, it’s between Rain and me, right?”

I can’t quite pin down what exactly Scarlet and I are to each other. Comrades leading a faction together? Friends?

The very fact that I’m pondering suggests that I might not be cut out for socializing. After this mission, I should retire. To wrap things up as quickly as possible, I’d need to exit at just the right moment, gracefully.

Being a leader of the Four Heavenly Kings is burdensome, as is the mission assigned by the elder. However, I have to properly conclude both. The mission needs to be completed so flawlessly that the elder won’t have anything else to say.

“Rain, you look like you’re lost in thought again?”

“It’s a habit. Can’t help it.”

“The scenery still feels too desolate, doesn’t it?”

With a flick of Scarlet’s fingers, the purple-tinged air surrounding us began to fade, revealing a new vista.

It was, oh, a motel. A 21st-century South Korean motel. A place I had visited once. There was even a television, though I wasn’t sure if it worked.

“What an interesting place, huh?”

“What did you do…?”

“I created a space that Rain would find comfortable. This isn’t my dream but yours, so it changed into a place you know.”

“Well, this is more, uh, not so much comfortable as…”

It made sense, given a succubus’s powers. A ‘convenient’ location for a fling probably…

A tension headache began to throb, then vanished, leaving me to chuckle in relief. It was better that a place from my past appeared rather than the organization’s; that would have been a real mess.

“Did I make a mistake?”

“No, um, thank you. I think I’ll really be able to relax for the first time in a while…”

I sprawled out on the motel bed. I could feel the mattress—soft yet supportive—cradling my body. It was a comfort I could never dream of in this world. A luxury of civilization, experienced after so long.

There was a TV remote on the bedside table. Turning on the TV with it, an old variety show I remembered watching came on. The quality was poor, and the story was off, so I turned it off again. I guess this was built from my memories.

“What was that just now?”

“Television.”

“I’ve never heard of it…”

“It doesn’t exist in this world. Maybe it’s because this is a dream or it came from my imagination.”

“Is that so…?”

Despite the unsavory aspects of a place like this motel, like Scarlet said, it was indeed comfortable. Maybe because it was a dream, I couldn’t delve too deeply into my thoughts. My mood became unreasonably relaxed.

It felt as though I had returned to 21st-century South Korea. It wasn’t like those days driven by social commitments and harsh realities but rather like those carefree days spent idly lounging in a motel.

Indeed.

“Uh, Rain? What? Why again… How did it turn out like this…?”

“Really now…?”

“I can hardly absorb energy with my hands…. R-R-Rain, could you close your eyes for a moment… please?”

“Mmm…?”

It wasn’t a difficult request, so I closed my eyes.

Like before, Scarlet’s hands grasped my cheeks. But this time, it was both hands instead of one.

And then, a peck.

Something stole a kiss from my lips and slipped away. When I opened my eyes again, Scarlet was turning her head with her ears beet red, unable to hide them.

“Scarlet?”

“Th-Th-That’s… so, are you okay now?!”

“Ha ha, yeah. Thank you.”

“Whew…”

“I shouldn’t have made you worry.”

“Don’t get the wrong idea? Even if I were dreaming, I wouldn’t do this with anyone but Rain…”

Fanning herself with her hand, Scarlet cooled her reddened face. Who would believe, looking at her now, that she was a succubus?

Her expression fitted a girl who had never held a man’s hand more than a succubus. And that was all the more Scarlet. She was, from her very existence, a being full of contradictions.

As the lust faded, a profound emotion welled up instead. I felt both grateful and sorry.

“Sigh… If Rain feels such warm, gentle emotions, it’s really too embarrassing for me, who’s having weird thoughts…”

“Is it really that bad?”

“Of course… Rain, you just rest. From now on, don’t think about anything at all!”

“Sure, sure.”

“Oh, Rain. Can I look around this room?”

“Feel free. It’s essentially your creation, this room.”

Now that my mind was at ease, it was time to get some sleep. Although, technically, I was already asleep.

Falling asleep within a dream was a curiously wondrous feeling. It was like watching myself sleep in the third person.

My mind drifted into further haziness. My chest rose and fell with each in and out breath.

Meanwhile, Scarlet rummaged around nearby, inspecting various things. A television, a small refrigerator with bottled water, a hairdryer, a smartphone charger, condoms… Why were those here?

I didn’t recall condoms being in the motel I stayed in. It must have materialized here due to the assumption that motels would have them.

While I pondered this, my consciousness snapped back to alertness. Scarlet seemed to notice and looked my way, still holding a condom in her hand.

“Rain?”

“Ah, Scarlet. How long will this space last?”

“Hmm, I’m not sure. Maybe until Rain wakes up…? Since it’s my magic that has put him to sleep, he should wake up when it’s dispelled… Oh, it seems like it’s about to end soon.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. Did you enjoy the dream?”

“Thanks to you, I rested well. I feel a bit more at ease. Thank you.”

“hehehe, you’re welcome.”

Once I wake from this dream, I have to return to the harrowing life of a spy, day after day.

But, having reflected on myself, I was able to realign my goals. My objective is to retire as soon as possible. As one of the Four Heavenly Kings, I’ve been planting daggers in the hearts of demons, and at the right moment, I plan to be defeated by the hero and make my exit. Until now, I’d been focusing on increasing my influence over the demons, but that wasn’t what truly mattered!

The hero needed to become stronger faster. Strong enough that it wouldn’t be strange for him to defeat even the weakest of the Four Heavenly Kings.

I will retire from this life within two years at most. It might seem odd for one of the Heavenly Kings to bow out so quickly…

But for me, it was feasible. No one would find it odd.

Because I am…

Known as the weakest of the Four Heavenly Kings!
