Game’s Dogma

Chapter 180: A Tiny Spark

For three entire days, countless players held their breaths as they witnessed the tragic battles that unfolded.

Dark World smugly uploaded countless videos onto the official forum. One showed a Howl of the Tempest Wolves player struggling fiercely despite being surrounded on all sides, bringing down an enemy with him as he cast his final skill and died. Some Dark World players even toyed around with female players from Howl of the Tempest Wolves by attacking certain parts of their bodies ‘unintentionally’.

Players no longer mocked Howl of the Tempest Wolves and went silent after seeing how the war developed in the past three days. One video after another, the world beheld how the unyielding members of Howl of the Tempest embraced death with welcoming arms. They never considered how long it took to gain their levels back; their minds were set on killing another enemy, saving another comrade.

Such was their hot-bloodedness as zealous wolves!

Finally, a turn of events occurred—players were applying to join Howl of the Tempest Wolves! The group of players numbered around three hundred, many of which weren’t even from Yoda. They banded together on the forums, met up in the game, and teleported to Yoda as a group. One of them whose ID was Nerdie created a post which read: ‘What are heroes?’

‘What are heroes? The ones who flaunt their superiority and mock their enemies? Or the wolf pack who brainlessly challenged their foes six times despite knowing they were the underdogs?

‘I can’t tell.

‘I’m not a veteran or elite whatsoever. Gosh, I’m just Level 10. Even in real life, I’m just a piece of trash who lives in the Tenth City. The word “hero” is an idea far beyond my reach, far beyond my comprehension. However, every player in Howl of the Tempest Wolves is a hero to me.’

The post blew the horns of their offensive the second time. Players surged into Yoda, and Howl of the Tempest Wolves were flooded with new members. In a single morning, their player count broke past 2,000.

‘They’re not a strong guild. But—they are a guild that holds a strong belief, a guild that never abandons its comrades. Rather than a guild, it’s more of a family.

‘I’m joining this family. Is anyone willing to become comrades with me?’

Nerdie concluded his post with such a line.

In the afternoon, another bombshell stirred everyone up once again.

Moonless Night lay resting in the conference room. Together with him were the core members of Dark World: Starless Night, Fei Yeung… For the past three days, they had been under great pressure, even more so than Howl of the Tempest Wolves.

Over 4,000 people couldn’t rest easy the entire time. Twelve hours wasn’t a short period, nor was it too long. Soon, members started refusing to participate in defending their base for various reasons, ranging from work, personal issues, to family issues. Only two to three thousand players readily took part in every battle. It didn’t just strain them physically, but also mentally.

Suddenly, a system notification woke Moonless Night’s from his nap.

Base Assault?! Moonless Night had a look at the time and cursed, ‘Fuck! What’s wrong with the system? Hasn’t it just been five hours since the last assault?’

Hearing his shout, his guild members also woke up and rubbed their tired eyes that hadn’t gotten enough rest in a good while.

After having a good look at the notification, Moonless Night blew over the top as he yelled, ‘Dammit! You damned thieves dare to interfere!’

Assassination Coalition had officially built their base at Yoda. The next moment, they initiated Base Assault on Dark World.

Windstrider projected the hologram from his phone and silently stood back behind Drako Yau.

The past few days were enough to make Windstrider admire his mysterious boss from the bottom of his heart. In every battle, Mask was the first to charge in as well as the one under the most pressure, but he never shrunk back. Like an unyielding spear, Mask would rather break than bend.

The person projected from the hologram was the guild master of Assassination Coalition, Goemon.

‘Why?’ Drako Yau asked a straightforward question. He had been slightly sleep-deprived lately, but this much was just a piece of cake compared to his training back in the days.

Goemon showed his bright-white teeth as he grinned. ‘Mask, I’m moved. Never before has anyone dared to challenge the authority of a first-rate guild—never. When Howl of the Tempest Wolves, once a first-rate guild, dares to take the lead, what reason is there for us Assassination Coalition to shrink back? I also owe you a favour.’

Drako Yau shook his head. ‘That was not a favour. There just weren’t any assassins in my squad.’

Goemon gazed intently at Drako Yau, but the fiery red mask blocked his probing gaze. He said, ‘I really want to pry open that mask of yours and see what you’re made of.

‘The videos have sold you out. Every single time, you lead your members at the very front. You even took a sword aura to protect a newbie who got killed so many times that he was just Level 8 once. Everyone can tell what sort of person you are.

‘I’ll gladly become friends with such a person.’

Assassination Coalition had always been feared not for their strength, but their suicidal attacking style and persistence—though the first guild that came to mind when mentioning such traits was no longer them. The crazed wolves had taken their place.

Assassination Coalition wasn’t too great in numbers, nor were they powerful players. Their assault ended swiftly with even greater casualties.

Seven hours later, Howl of the Tempest Wolves launched their seventh assault, and they ended up losing another level. Three hours after their attempt, another Base Assault was initiated on Dark World. The challenger this time was Corrupted Officials!

‘I’m not helping Howl of the Tempest Wolves. It’s just that we’re in the same boat. Once Moonless Night, that maniac, finishes off Howl of the Tempest Wolves, will he sit idle and leave other guilds alone? More importantly, it’s about time that haughty fella learns his lesson,’ said Hexen as he laughed creepily and revealed his rotten teeth.

Worthy of their reputation as a first-rate guild, Dark World also successfully defended against Corrupted Official’s assault. But that wasn’t the end of their misery. An hour later, it was Hot-Blooded’s turn to strike.

Howl of the Tempest Wolves, Assassination Coalition, Corrupted Officials, Hot-Blooded. The four guilds, like a set of skill combos, attacked in turns. Even though most of Howl of the Tempest Wolves’ players had lost seven levels, Dark World’s players also lost four levels on average under the constant siege, with some cannon-fodder even losing nine or ten levels.

Dark World really suffered a massive blow this time around. No matter how mad Moonless Night was, he had no choice but to stay out of the spotlight for a while. When Dark World finally slipped back to Empyreon, the entire Yoda celebrated in an uproar.

It wasn’t just a simple victory. Ordinary players challenged their elite counterparts, a challenge by commoners against nobles! What’s more—they won!

Howl of the Tempest Wolves took the world by storm. Although the majority of their members had lost many levels, many flooded to Yoda to join them, bringing their player count to 3,000. When the guild rankings refreshed, Howl of the Tempest Wolves returned to being a first-rate guild and were ranked eleventh.

Drako Yau faded out of Howl of the Tempest Wolves once again.

The incident overhauled the city of Yoda. The four great guilds of Yoda, namely Howl of the Tempest Wolves, Assassination Coalition, Corrupted Officials, and Hot-Blooded, never once fought a war among themselves. They had forged their friendship through fighting against a common enemy. The four guilds also gave the faint impression that they banded together under Mask, willing to fight for his cause.

Triggered by the catalyst known as Dark World, the three major guilds that used to rule Yoda separately became one with tight bonds together with the newcomer.
