GHML – Chapter 31.2: “You Want A Divorce?” (2)

The bowl of longevity and two eggs, although simple, brought warm tears to He Jiang’s eyes who wolfed them down without a second word.

He Jiang: “Thank you for the noodles. I have to make a trip to my parent’s home today, do you want to…”

Shang Jing: “I’m not going. Please tell them I’m busy.”

Even though it was impolite, but… the last phone call he had with Father He was still fresh in his mind. Plus, they were going to file for divorce soon. It would not be right to act chummy in front of the elders and provide them with false hopes.

He Jiang did not insist and replied, “Ok.”

He Jiang: It’s already enough with me lying to him. Let’s not involve others unnecessarily.

“I’ll be back home for lunch.”

Shang Jing: “I know, you don’t have to keep reminding me.”

In fact, it was better with He Jiang out of the house, it would make preparing the birthday lunch easier.

Shang Jing whipped out his phone the moment He Jiang stepped out of the house and reviewed the tutorial video ‘How to present Shaxian snacks like Michelin 3 star dishes’. After confirming his grocery list, he opened a food delivery application and placed his order.

Next, he went into the storeroom and took out a set of exquisite enamel tableware and cleaned them. The unique shapes of the plates were going to be the main essence of the dish.

To complete his shopping list, he went to the security guardhouse and plucked two stalks of peppermint leaves the Security Guard leader had been tending to, and bought some blueberries and cherry tomatoes from the fruits shop in the neighborhood.

Another hour later, his 88 yuan total dishes arrived.

For the main dish, he used a silver fork and twirled some Black Bean Sauce Noodles on it, removing the spring onions on top as he did, to form a round ball of noodles. Next, he placed it in the middle of one of the large round plates and removed the fork. To garnish the dish, he added two fresh peppermint leaves on top and filled the empty spaces with some blueberries and cherry tomatoes cut in half.

To complete it, he filled a white saucer with peanut butter, making sure to garnish it with a peppermint leaf.

It was important to keep the portions of the Black Bean Sauce Noodles on the plate small so as to not compromise the presentation.

For the next dish, he took out two chicken wings from the bags, refried them with a layer of egg and breadcrumbs, and placed them on a rectangle plate lined with a dolly paper. On one end of the plate, he squeezed a drop of ketchup, and on the other end, he arranged a pile of peppermint leaves. Similarly, the chicken wings were arranged into a ball with one above the other, and the empty spaces filled with two blueberries like they had fallen there by chance… The overall presentation of the dish was vibrant and appetizing.

The little artist worked on the dishes for a whole hour, producing eight plates of dishes. But there were still leftovers in the takeaway boxes.

Stuffing them into the microwave, he heated them up and dug in.

Next, he went into the wine cellar to pick a bottle of red wine and two tall wine glasses.

To complete his presentation, he threw a large lace tablecloth over the dining table, letting the ends flow down the four sides of the table. It was romantic.

And that concluded his work here.

He Jiang started having lunch at 11AM with his parents. Filling himself half-full, he stood up to leave.

Mother He: “Remember to bring Xiao Jing along with you next time.”

He Jiang replied in a resigned tone, “I’ve told you many times that I’m still chasing him and may not be able to bring him here the next time I come over. Are you banking on that to keep me away?”

Mother He: “I’ve seen reviews on the internet and know about the close relationship between the both of you. I have also watched the live broadcast. Son, if you really like him, you have to be more proactive in chasing him, stop dragging your feet. Didn’t he make you dumplings on the show with your aunt’s recipe?”

But He Jiang did not want Mother He to be over-optimistic, just in case she decided to call Shang Jing on a whim. “With your son working in the entertainment industry for such a long time, I believe you know not everything you see on the television can be trusted.”

Mother He: “Just tell me whether the dumplings he made were your favorite.”

Every year, on He Jiang’s birthday, Mother He would personally wrap some dumplings for him. He Jiang was a picky eater and wanted to eat dumplings made by people he loved the most, saying it was more precious and how he would never get sick of it.

But this time, the words ‘I’m eating this everyday’ were basically written on his face when those same dumplings were placed in front of him.

He Jiang chuckled and answered, “Yes.”

Mother He: “Fine. Hurry back home and have lunch with your boyfriend. Didn’t he cook up a feast for you and is waiting for your return?”

He Jiang: “Mm, I’ll visit again when I have the time.”

He Jiang was stunned and elated when he saw the table of luxurious Western-style dishes. Even though the portions were small, it was a non-issue since he already had something to eat at his parents house. The most important thing was that the dishes looked expensive which reflected Shang Jing’s sincerity.

Shang Jing was worrying about the food getting cold when he saw He Jiang stepping into the house. He stood up and exclaimed guiltily, “The supplier delivered the food too early and it got cold.”

He Jiang: “It’s alright. We can reheat them.”

Shang Jing glanced at the eight beautifully plated dishes and asked, “Reheating the food will affect its presentation. Do you mind that?”

After reheating the food, they would become normal Shaxian snacks again.

The corners of He Jiang’s lips twitched upwards. “I’ve already received your kind thoughts. It’s cold outside, it’ll be better to eat some hot food.”

With that, he opened the microwave oven and reheated all the dishes in ten minutes. By then, the blueberries and cherry tomatoes were wilting away.

He Jiang: “They are just drooping a little, no harm done.”

Shang Jing sat down nervously. With the essence of the dishes gone, the mouthfeel of them would no doubt be discounted.

His eyes were fixated on He Jiang as he took a bite of the ‘Passionate Special Tomato Sauce Spaghetti’ and eagerly asked, “How is it?”

He Jiang: It tastes like the Black Bean Sauce Noodles from a University canteen. The restaurant Shang Jing found doesn’t seem authentic. He must have seen those adverts by those internet celebrities and got taken in.

“It’s delicious.”
