Chapter 17: Who Will Be First?

“Bai Tiantian also managed to find a beast lair that has an assessment token placed in it.”

In the camp, a soldier in charge of tracking Bai Tiantian shouted.

Right on the heels of that, the image of Bai Tiantian displayed on the detector screen was transferred to the big monitor.

Almost instantly, everyone’s attention was drawn naturally toward the monitor.

Bai Tiantian’s cute and charming looks were not the only reason for that. The main reason was because of the environment she was in.

Rotting corpses and gleaming white bones littered the ground. One could vaguely hear metallic clicking sounds, almost as if someone was typing on a keyboard.

Soon, everyone understood the reason for the sound.

A ginormous centipede quickly crawled out from the depths of the cave.

Its body was more than 10 meters long. Under that, its densely packed green long legs kept moving. That was the source of the metallic sound that everyone heard.

Everyone watching the monitor felt a tingling sensation in their scalps.

“What the heck? This is freaking scary!”

“If this thing appears in front of me, I’ll probably burn down my entire house just to be rid of it.”

“This is a superior-grade Savage Multi-Armored Centipede. It has a strong defense and high attack power. On top of that, its venom is difficult to avoid. Bai Tiantian is in trouble.”

But soon, this person changed his mind.

On the screen, Bai Tiantian approached the Multi-Armored Centipede and raised her tender hand.

Swoosh!

A blue light that was visible to the naked eye emitted from the palm of her hand. Following that, the Multi-Armored Centipede did something unbelievable.

“Am I seeing things? The Multi-Armored Centipede has bowed its head and is rubbing it against Bai Tiantian’s palm. It’s acting like a puppy would!”

Everyone froze. Right on the heels of that, there arose a tremendous uproar among the crowd.

“F*ck, this doesn’t make sense!”

“The Multi-Armored Centipede has a fiendish and ferocious disposition. It enjoys feasting upon human flesh. All this information is recorded in the Dire Beast Illustrated Handbook.”

“Could we have been mistaken about the Multi-Armored Centipede all along?”

“How is it possible that we’re wrong about it? Have you forgotten that Bai Tiantian’s career talent is a beast tamer?”

“A newly awakened martial artist can tame a superior-grade Savage beast? She also has monstrous talent!”

“It’s already something worth celebrating when we have Su Hei, a person who has such monstrous talent, in our base. I didn’t expect that there are another two people like that.”

“The recruits for this batch are absurd!”

At this moment, Su Hei appeared outside the military camp with the assessment token in his hand. Wang Dong, Li Hua, and the others had also been transported back with him.

“The assessment token has a transportation function?”

Su Hei was astonished.

It was the first time he had gotten teleported, and the magical experience lingered in his mind.

“Su Hei!”

Qin Feng walked out of the military tent and called out to Su Hei.

“You, kid, have wowed everyone with your performance!” he gushed. “When you guys were surrounded by the black-ringed leopards, the captain quickly brought his men over to support you. We didn’t expect that you would not only escape from those black-ringed leopards unscathed but also eliminate a Spirit-level Eight-Eyed Blood Wolf.”

As he spoke, Qin Feng also motioned for his men to carry Li Hua into the medical tent—that had just been pitched—to give her emergency medical care.

“I was merely lucky, and my friends cooperated with me well.” Su Hei smiled modestly.

Qin Feng did not buy that and quickly interrupted, “Why are you so humble? I’m on your side.”

“I’ll let you in on a secret. The captain has already told the higher-ups about your performance. You haven’t even joined the City Defense Team, but your name is already well-known amongst the fighters.”

Su Hei was unbothered by such stuff, and he gave a half-hearted smile.

“Leader Qin, there are still seven or eight of us who haven’t killed enough dire beasts, so they haven’t passed the test yet. I want to bring them back there and hunt dire beasts.”

Qin Feng quickly held onto Su Hei. “All of you have been deemed to have passed the test!”

They cooperated and killed an Eight-Eyed Blood Wolf together under Su Hei’s leadership. If they were not qualified, no one would be.

Su Hei felt that Qin Feng made a valid point, so under Qin Feng’s instructions, Su Hei told everyone to head toward the pitched tents to rest and wait for everyone else to finish their test.

Su Hei entered the tent.

Just as he did so, the youth in white, Li Burou appeared in front of the military tents. He was holding a token in his hand.

He called out to Qin Feng, who was intending to head back and smiled warmly.

“Leader Qin, I’ve gotten the assessment token,” he reported.

Qin Feng nodded. “Not bad. Congratulations on being the second martial artist who has gotten the assessment token.”

Li Burou’s smile froze.

He asked incredulously, “There’s someone who has gotten the token before me?”

“Indeed. Like you, he just came back,” said Qin Feng as he pointed to the tent that Su Hei and his team were in.

Li Burou turned his head. Through the gap in the tent flap, he immediately saw Su Hei among the crowd.

Li Burou knew that a powerful figure had arisen from Class D.

Originally, he was not bothered by that at all. After all, with Class D’s standard, an intermediate-level martial artist emerging from it was already considered powerful.

It seemed like he had underestimated that fellow.

“Su Hei, huh? Interesting.” A soft smile played on Li Burou’s lips.

He wanted to turn and leave.

However, in front of the military tent, a figure materialized from nowhere.

Woof!

The figure had not fully materialized, but the sound of barking was already heard.

This person was Bai Tiantian.

She exclaimed, “Leader Qin, I got the assessment token! I should be the first to do so, right?”

Bai Tiantian strode toward Qin Feng and handed him her token.

Qin Feng reached out to take it, then shook his head with a smile.

“Although you aren’t the first, the fact that you managed to get hold of this token proves your ability.”

His words sounded pleasant enough, but Bai Tiantian’s focus was on the second half of his sentence.

“There’s someone even earlier than me?” Bai Tiantian looked around, and her gaze landed on Li Burou.

“Damn it. I can’t believe that I’m one step behind you again. Ice Cream, bite him!” she ordered.

The snow-white puppy that Bai Tiantian was holding onto started to growl and bare its teeth at Li Burou.

Li Burou was already used to how Bai Tiantian behaved. He smiled faintly.

“Although I’m faster than you, the one who snatched first place from you is someone else. I’m merely second,” said Li Burou

As he spoke, Li Burou pointed at Su Hei who was in the tent.

Upon hearing that, Bai Tiantian was dumbfounded.

She did not expect that someone would be even faster than Li Burou.

“This man is really something!” she thought.

Bai Tiantian did not manage to give any response as something suddenly happened.

Someone else materialized out of thin air.

“Su Hei, I’ve gotten the assessment token. Let’s see how you compete with me!” A sinister voice rang out.

It was Cao Guangning. His mouth was wounded.

The next instant, he sensed that something was amiss.

Qin Feng, Li Burou, and Bai Tiantian were staring at him.

They thought, “Did this guy just say out his thoughts?”

Li Burou was a straightforward person.

Thus, he asked, “Cao, did you just say out your thoughts?”

“It’s none of your business,” snapped Cao Guangning.

He knew that he was in the wrong there, so he quickly changed the topic.

“You two are impressive. I thought that I was the first and the only one to have gotten the assessment token,” said Cao Guangning.

“It’s all in your head, young man,” Bai Tiantian said cynically.

Li Burou also shook his head. “Nope, you’re not the first. Neither are you the second or third.”

As he spoke, Li Burou pointed his slender finger at the side.

“He is the first to get the token.”

Cao Guangning followed the direction Li Burou’s finger was pointing in to see Su Hei sitting crossed-legged in the tent.

Instantly, his face darkened.

“It’s him again! Su Hei!” he thought angrily.
