Chapter 320: The Nautilus

Chapter 320 The Nautilus of the Decisive Battle

Gorgeous often accompanies greatness, luck more often comes from simplicity.

In the unprecedented naval battle on Midway Island, there was a submarine with a cute and pink name that started to steal the show unknowingly. Its legendary experience, like its name, is full of luck and fantasy.

This is the USS Nautilus, an American submarine of World War II.

The name of the submarine    Nautilus comes from Jules Verne's novel "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea". The submarine of the same name has a fantastic underwater adventure in Verne's pen. But in fact, the submarine, which was named Nautilus during World War II, did not look cool at all, and there was no romantic temperament at all.

The "Nautilus" (SS-168) belongs to the Narwhal-class fleet submarine. It entered the US Navy in March 1930 and was considered an older submarine at that time. It is a large ocean-going submarine with a length of 113 meters, a width of 10.1 meters, a draft of 5.2 meters, a surface displacement of 2,987 tons, and an underwater displacement of 3,960 tons. The dual-shaft propulsion system is equipped with two diesel engines with a total power of 5,600 horsepower and two electric motors with a total power of 1,600 horsepower, which can reach speeds of 17.4 knots and 8 knots respectively, with a range of nearly 10,000 nautical miles and a maximum diving depth of 90 meters. Equipped with 6 533mm torpedo tubes (4 at the bow, 2 at the stern), 26 ammunition, 2 152mm guns and 2 7.62mm machine guns.

The Nautilus is actually a submarine that is neither pretty nor cool, but rather big and dumb.

Since the decommissioning of the Nautilus, the Americans have not built such a large conventional submarine.

The submarine Nautilus set off from Pearl Harbor in the late stage of preparations for the Battle of Midway, and sailed for a long time without any danger and without encountering any Japanese ships.

   June 4th, 7:00 sharp.

Early this morning, it and its full crew were ordered to stand by about 200 nautical miles west of Midway. At this time, it was slowly floating on the sea leisurely, and it didn't look like it was fighting with the Japanese to the end.

The captain, Major Brockman, was trying his best to look west at the bow of the boat, as if he wanted to see what the black dots in the distance ahead were.

"Major Brockman, there are a lot of ships in the channel ahead." The radar operator suddenly stuck his head out of the hatch and reported loudly.

"Dive urgently, all the personnel are in place, don't drink! What about you, chief officer, that's all you need for ethanol fuel, you'll die if you drink less, war, be serious!" He was less than forty, looking like The lean and happy Major Brockman immediately descended from the bridge to the cabin along the cabin door escalator and shouted casually.

"Uh, yes, major, all crew members pay attention, there is a situation ahead, take your place immediately, this is not a drill." The first officer put down the glass bottle in his hand, burped, looked around and said loudly.

The submarine operators at each post immediately moved in an orderly manner. A minute later, the Nautilus submarine slowly dived into the sea, white waves rose slightly on the sea, and the huge ship disappeared without a trace.

"Raise the periscope and report the bearing!" The major said solemnly.

"Yes, raise the periscope, 80 degrees straight ahead, 6000 yards away." The chief mate repeated.

"Stay level, move forward 80 degrees, and maintain a speed of 8 knots."

Ten minutes later, Brockman put his hands on the lift pole, and found dozens of his own bombers from the submarine's periscope, bombing Japanese ships in front. U.S. bombers in the air, one after another, glide low-altitude bombs. But almost without exception, they were shot down by zero-type fighter machine guns or by anti-aircraft guns on ships.

"The brothers of the bomber are so miserable, how can there be no fighter escort. This fighter is hiding beautifully, you hide, hey, it's smoking, it's all over, don't you have any results!" The major shook his head while watching, wrinkled. He frowned in a low voice.

"There was an explosion! It was the sound of a bomb hitting the hull, and there was also the sound of a bomb exploding in the sea!" Sonar Brat suddenly put down his headphones and shouted excitedly.

Major Brockman was refreshed, and his eyes were again attached to the periscope, looking in the direction of the sunship.

"Blutter is right, there's a faint glow of fire and black smoke coming out of the Japs' destroyer! Good job. Oh, no, there's a Japs' plane coming in our direction, lower the periscope, don't let The Japanese see us! Come on, you little **** drink first, you can't do anything!"

The sound of    "Guru Lu" came, and the periscope descended in response, and there was a wave of waves on the sea. Half a minute later, the sea was calm, and there was no trace of it.

"Continue to dive, brothers, to the huge fleet of the Japanese devils, we will kill them below, and we will give them a surprise! Let them know what a **** surprise!" Brockman was delighted to see the hunt. A terrifying cold light appeared.

"Major, isn't this a bit exaggerated, once we are discovered, we will be chased to death later!"

"If you want to get a medal, you must not work hard! If you want to do it, you must do it. Brothers, do you think so!" The major was full of pride and big-hearted, and he didn't care at all.

"I came out, and after so many days under the water, I was suffocated to death. It would be so boring if I didn't do anything!"

"Captain, you have the final say. If we all die, that's fine. If you don't die, you promise me to introduce your sister-in-law, and you fooled me last time!" the chief engineer said strangely.

"Okay, I got it, I must introduce Marilyn to you, everyone, keep your voice down, don't let the Japanese sonar hear!"

After making up his mind, the whole ship moved. The Nautilus slowly sank to twenty meters below sea level, slowly and ghostly, heading towards Japan's huge mobile fleet. The Nautilus single-handedly sailed towards dozens or hundreds of huge Japanese ships, like an old lady hiding in the dark to shoot arrows at soldiers in full armor. It looked funny and tragic, but she was so resolute and majestic!

One minute and one second passed, and the Nautilus miraculously drilled into the Japanese fleet from underwater without being found.

   7:45am.

"Afloat the submarine to periscope level." Major Brockman ordered decisively after hearing the sonar operator Blatt's soft position report.

A minute later, the Nautilus floated up gently, and when it was only 5 meters away from the sea, the water injection stopped.

   "Raise the periscope!"

After dozens of seconds, the major's eyes looked at the scene full of enemy ships in the periscope, both surprised and worried. The sweet and bitter feelings come and go back and forth in my heart, very sour.

"We are full of Japanese aircraft carriers, cruisers and destroyers, brothers, I am determined to do it!" The major finally gritted his teeth to set the tone and said softly.

"Let me see, which one is more cost-effective, this one looks like a destroyer? This one is a cruiser? This one is good, big, oh yo, it's an aircraft carrier! Brothers, get ready and follow my orders!" Major Brockman turned the periscope from side to side and took the trouble to pick targets.

quite a bit like the grandson monkey picking peaches in the peach garden.

While Major Brockman was observing and calculating the distance, the sonar operator Blatt listened for a while with his earphones on, and then said softly:

"Major, a destroyer is approaching us, and we have been spotted!"

"Got it, leave him alone and run after this wave. I order! The target aircraft carrier is 4,000 yards away, and the No. 1 and No. 2 torpedo tubes are ready!"

"Received, the No. 1 and No. 2 torpedo tubes are ready!"

"Open the No. 1 and No. 2 underwater launch pipes."

"Received, open the No. 1 and No. 2 underwater launch pipes."

"Report the position and distance of the enemy ship!"

"80 degrees straight ahead, 3800 yards."

"Aim for the target, Torpedo No. 1, launch!"

"Received, the No. 1 torpedo is launched!"

   "Torpedo No. 2 launched!"

   "Torpedo No. 2 launched!"

After a tense operation, two huge MK14 torpedoes were launched from the water, with long water-skiing marks, and hurried towards the Japanese aircraft carrier.

The crew of the    Nautilus listened with bated breath. After a while, there was a "boom" sound, and the huge sound was monitored by the sonar operator Blatt.

"Hit! What the hell, this is a dud, it didn't explode! Another missed." Blatter said bitterly.

"Boom, boom, boom" Suddenly there were four or five explosions above the submarine, and all the crew members were shaken.

"Depth charge! Dive! Emergency dive! Run, go under the nearest Japanese ship!" Major Brockman shouted in a hurry, no longer lowering his voice.

In the next few minutes, the depth charges above their heads exploded one by one, the lights in the Nautilus flickered, and the atmosphere was very depressed. Whether this huge submarine can escape the Japanese pursuit, no one is sure.

Who is God's darling will see the true chapter at this time.

"Don't run in a straight line, in circles, in an arc! There are countless ships here, there are many noises, and the Japanese's sonar is backward, so it may not be able to catch us." After the major ordered the first officer, he said to himself. .

In the deep blue claustrophobic sea, the Nautilus was chased and bombed several times along the way. After desperately circling under the Japanese ship for a few minutes, the sonar operator Blatter said softly:

"The Japanese fleet headed east, as if two ships were left behind to deal with us. Listening to the sound, it should be a cruiser and a destroyer. They don't seem to know where we are, and they are throwing depth charges everywhere."

"Don't make any noise. We slowly drove westward and stabilized." Major Brockman said solemnly with sweat on his face.

"Come on, the little one is coming in our direction!" Blatter said softly.

"Dive down, set a depth of 80 meters, hurry!" the major said urgently.

"Received, set the depth to 80 meters, pour water, hurry up, you slackers, why do you usually drink so fast!" The chief engineer scolded the sailors in a low voice, and the sailors were all in a hurry.

Immediately, the submarine slanted down and dived silently into the deep sea.

the top of their heads. The Japanese light cruiser Nagara and the destroyer Arashi were hovering around the sea, and then each was responsible for a piece of the sea, constantly dropping depth charges.

"Boom, boom, boom, boom", depth charges exploded near the Nautilus, and the huge vibration and water pressure were instantly transmitted to the submarine.

"Bang dang, chi chi chi", the sailors on the submarine suddenly staggered, several pipes burst open and the water column under high pressure splashed everywhere.

"The rear cabin is flooded, some people, come and rush to repair with me, hurry up!" After the chief mate finished speaking, he grabbed the pipes and handles and stumbled, and a few sailors followed.

"Block the leak, hold steady, and continue to dive." The major was no longer nervous. Now I have no choice but to do my best to obey the destiny.

"It's 80 meters underwater, keep the hull level." The chief engineer said softly.

"Continue west, at a speed of 5 knots, don't stop. If you are still waiting, it will be over."

   "Received, speed 5 knots, west."

"Bratter, report the position and situation of the Japanese ship above, Brat?" The major asked several times, but the sonar operator Brat didn't reply. on the ground.

"Captain, Bratt hit his head, his face was covered in blood, and he passed out."

"shit, medic, hurry up, put a bandage on him and see if Blatt can keep working. At this juncture, if Blatt can't work, we're just as blind."

A few minutes later, the Nautilus slowly left the sea area just now, and the depth charges were still exploding not far behind the boat. The leak in the submarine was also plugged.

"Major, Blatt woke up, the blow on his head was covered, and the bleeding stopped. But his condition is very bad, he should have been knocked out of a concussion." The medical soldier reported softly.

"I'm fine, I can still work, I'm just a little dizzy. Help me get to my seat." Blatter said weakly, struggled to get up, and sat down with the help of the medics.

Blatter picked up the monitor headphones and put it on his head, listened for a while, and said weakly: "One of the two Japanese ships drove away and went east, and the other was still a few hundred meters behind us. Wandering around, it should be a destroyer."

Brockman nodded and said softly: "Continue to maintain the original course and 5 knots per hour. People who are not on duty are not allowed to walk. I will hold back when I **** and pee, and I am not allowed to make a little movement. It seems that the Japanese anti-submarine is a little weak, we may be able to hold on."

"Major, Blatter fainted again. Now it's better not to let him work any more, to avoid overuse of his brain, and he should be allowed to lie down and rest." The Medical Corps reported.

"You deal with it, take care of Bratt. Hey, this is bad. First mate, who would listen to this stuff, just listen to it, and now we are blind."

"That thing is so professional, who the **** knows it, no one on the boat understands it."

"It seems that after escaping this disaster, we have to go back to Pearl Harbor. We can't do it without Blatt."

After more than an hour, the Nautilus drove west for about ten kilometers. They still didn't know what was going on above their heads. Major Brockman couldn't help it.

"The submarine floated up, slowed down, and stopped about 5 meters from the sea surface."

"Received, float up slowly, and float to the surface in three minutes."

Three minutes later, the Nautilus hovered five meters below sea level.

"Raise the periscope and prepare for battle." Brockman held the periscope, put his eyes on the observation mirror, and looked out to sea. After looking around for a week, he laughed and said, "Haha, the Japanese are gone, we won the game of hide and seek! First mate, lift the boat, float to the surface, let's go out and get some air."
