Chapter 20: Easy Evolution

When the masked man saw Cao Yan escaping with a cart, he shouted to his teammates, “Everyone, take note. One of the carts is stolen.”

The man was afraid to look in the direction of his leader after the report. If that person escaped from him with a cart, he would have to take up the majority of the responsibility, which might very well be the end of his life. He did not dare to dilly-dally further. He released the rope tying the other cart to the wind-calling beast and jumped on its back quickly.

That wind-calling beast started dashing behind Cao Yan.

Not long after the two left, the robot fighters’ leader successfully caught up and killed the elderly man. He then turned back to look in Cao Yan’s direction before going over to the cart that was left behind. He flipped the cloth covering the cart and glanced inside. “There’s nothing here. Two people stay behind; kill off those who are still breathing. The rest of you, follow me and give chase.”

The others remained silent and moved in an orderly manner to do what they had to do.

After a long chase, they found a body lying by the road. Upon closer inspection, it was the first person who got on the wind-calling beast.

Done checking on his teammate, one of the masked men reported to the leader, “He’s dead. The fatal blow was on his neck, which was almost completely broken. It was death in a single blow. The other party should be a skilled killer. He’s merciless, and his weapon is very sharp.”

The leader slightly furrowed his brows together. They had immediately started their pursuit, yet the man had died in such a short period. On top of that, his death was done so cleanly. The other party was genuinely skilled!

The leader immediately became prudent. “Continue the chase. Stay close together.”

The group followed the tracks left behind by the cart and continued deep into the night.

What exactly happened that made Cao Yan kill off his first chaser silently?

Rewinding the time back a little.

Cao Yan leaped onto the cart pulled by the Wind-calling beast. The two beasts were running like the wind along the forest road.

He sat in the cart and glanced back. When he saw the masked man not giving up, he just pressed his lips together gently.

The two traveled a great distance within a blink of an eye. Without any warning, the masked man fell off the wind-calling beast, and onto the ground. Blood squirted out from his neck, and he was dead within a second.

Cao Yan was not shocked when he saw the scene; instead, he let out a soft sigh of relief.

He had already made preparations for what was to come the moment he leaped onto the cart. He was here to meet up with Eggy. When he jumped on the cart, he could already sense Eggy not far away. Through their spiritual connection, he got Eggy to lay in ambush along the way so that he could make his escape.

The reason for the masked man’s sudden death was that simple.

Eggy hid along Cao Yan’s route. After his cart passed it, it spat out a string of silk across the road and made it invisible.

It was almost impossible to see the string of silk even in the day, much less at night.

With the chaser moving like the wind, how could he notice such a fine string of silk? When he dashed past, the silk thread cut his throat, and the poor guy died without even knowing how. Even with all the skills and abilities, he never got the chance to use them.

Ever since he learned the existence of supernatural powers in this world, Cao Yan knew that it would be a matter of time before he would run into an unavoidable conflict.

Just the fact that they wanted to silence him, a bystander, showed that they weren’t kind souls. Cao Yan did not feel bad if Eggy killed one of them.

After the successful ambush, Eggy spat out a mouthful of black gas, and the silk thread disintegrated.

Cao Yan had instructed Eggy to destroy the murder weapon. He did not want the rest to figure out the cause of their teammate’s death.

After following his instructions, Eggy spat some silk threads towards the trees by the road and swung itself forward to catch up with the cart. It landed beside Cao Yan and flailed its legs around.

Cao Yan did not know what it was trying to express. He thought it might be acting cute since it supposedly had cuteness in it.

Perhaps it was trying to fish for compliments after killing someone?

Though, Cao Yan soon realized that Eggy appeared different. It was obviously larger in size and the black mist around it was denser.

F*ck, had Eggy evolved?!

Cao Yan’s plan was to rush over to guard Eggy while it evolved. He didn’t think that it would be done with the whole affair while he was on the way to meet it.

It only used such a short time to move up one stage?

How could the process be so simple? It was not written like that in the skill book. Even breaking through stage one to stage two would require at least a quiet environment without any disturbance during the evolution process, as the demon pet would be the most fragile then.

Eggy’s evolution process seemed as simple as farting, and the quiet one at that. Even Cao Yan, who had a spiritual connection with it, could not tell before seeing it with his own eyes.

This was obviously not a good time to check on Eggy’s condition. They should make their escape first.

After riding for a while more, Cao Yan sent a mental message to the wind-calling beast to get it to slow down and stop by the side.

The pursuers could catch up to them any moment, so Cao Yan had to make haste. Before leaving, he lifted the cloth to look at what was hidden underneath.

“What’s in these two gunny sacks? One of them has a human shape. Is it a corpse or a living person?”

Cao Yan had already noticed the two large gunny sacks in the car when he just got on. He did not know what specifically was within the sacks, but judging from the shape, one of them seemed to contain a person.

He did not want to meddle in others’ affairs. However, looking at the human-shaped sack, if he just left, he might cause an innocent life to be lost. While he was stuck in a dilemma, Eggy spat out two silk threads to stick the gunny sacks together. It then displayed its overpowering strength as it dragged the gunny sacks like they were toys into the forest.

Cao Yan was delighted. He gave the wind-calling beast its last command with the spiritual bridge.

The wind-calling beast continued dashing forward and vanished in the blink of an eye.

Cao Yan, on the other hand, went into the forest and disappeared behind Eggy.

Despite entering the woods, he did not let his guard down. He only relaxed a little after they changed directions several times and made sure they did not leave any tracks behind.

After making his escape, Cao Yan hid at the fringe of the forest and got Eggy to keep guard as he looked inside the two gunny sacks.

Cao Yan untied the one with the human shape first and found a pretty boy lying inside, unconscious.
