Chapter 9: Welcome To My Home

“So... You don’t want me to call you teacher, master, mistress or something?”

“No. It makes me feel like an old scrawny demon. Just call me Vera.”

“Okay!”

The two humanoid demons, Blake and Vera were currently walking through the forest side by side as they leisurely chatted with each other as if there weren’t any dangerous demonic beasts that roamed around everywhere throughout the forest.

Earlier, after Blake had calmed down and apologized once more for getting Vera’s shoulder damp with his tears, Vera led him back to where the 4 other wolves were still lying on the ground and told him to finish them off so that he could also take their souls.

Blake refused at first, thinking that Vera would not be getting anything even though she had ‘painstakingly’ fought those wolves, but she shrugged him off, telling him that even 1000 of those wolves wouldn’t be enough for her to receive the significant strength boost, or in Blake’s term, a level up.

It made him wonder how high was Vera’s level, but after he asked her if she had evolved or not, she only laughed saying,

.....

“Just focus on your own progress, Blake. Setting your goal on something so far away sometimes leads to demotivation instead.”

He had guessed what she had meant by saying that was that she was way stronger than him and he shouldn’t even bother wondering how strong she actually was, and just focus on himself.

But how could he not be curious? He wanted to know more about the demoness. Not only her strength, but he also wanted to know everything about the devilishly beautiful demoness that had caught his interest and even rooted him in place when he first saw her just by seeing her looks.

Vera noticed Blake’s guess and spoke, “I’ll tell you later when you’ve evolved once.”

Hearing that, Blake didn’t ask any more questions and just went straight to kill all 4 wolves that actually had their feet tendons completely cut off hence why they were lying there all this time.

[You have leveled up!]

Blake received the notification once again after he had eaten all four souls and then he checked his status.

He had only glimpsed upon it the first time he had seen his status because he was still talking with Vera, but now that they were simply walking through the forest without doing anything in particular, Blake now had the time to properly look at them.

‘What’s a darkness demon?’ He asked inwardly.

He didn’t expect to get an answer, but soon the mechanical voice chimed in again and replied to him,

[It’s a species of demons that are well-versed and have a very high affinity to the Darkness element compared to other demons.]

Seeing that the system had the ability to answer the questions that he was wondering about, he continued,

‘Darkness element affinity? What is that? How many elements are out there? What affinity do I have?’

Blake was waiting patiently for an answer, but even after 10 whole seconds, the mechanical voice didn’t give him even a single reply.

‘Is this the system broken? Or does it have certain rules about answering those questions?’

Blake then looked at his status once again before he asked inwardly again,

‘What does physique and spirit stat mean?’

And this time, the voice answered again,

[The physique stat represents your overall physical capabilities. Putting points in the physique stat will strengthen your body’s strength, agility, endurance, and toughness altogether.]

[The spirit stat represents your overall magical capabilities. Putting points in the spirit stat will improve your ability to control the nether, increase your comprehension ability, and also your mental strength.]

‘I see... I guess the system can only give answers to the questions regarding the things mentioned on the status page. It can give explanations to what is a darkness demon because darkness demon was mentioned in the status, but it can’t give an answer to what affinities were because it wasn’t written on the status page.’ Blake thought as he nodded to himself.

‘But the real question is, how do I allocate the unused status points?’ He thought while staring at the 10 unused status points that he got after leveling up twice.

Blake thought long and hard for about a full minute to not get an answer as he was still lost about how things actually work in the demon world and whether increasing his still low physique stat to be the same level as his higher spirit stat or he should be a spirit purist and put all his unused points to the spirit stat.

He liked- loved to use magic and cast spells, and he was actually leaning towards the latter choice and he wouldn’t really mind too much abandoning his physical stat altogether with his undying and overflowing love with magic.

But he didn’t know whether that would be a good choice for him, so he hesitated profusely and held his decision.

However, in the midst of his confusion, he suddenly saw an angel with glowing white light veiling her whole being walking in front of him. Despite the fact that the angel was actually a demon and the white light was actually red light coming from the red sun above, Blake didn’t care too much about the details and decided to ask his angel-like teacher about it.

“Umm... Vera, how do demons usually get stronger after eating souls? Do they get to choose whether they want to strengthen their physical strength or their magical ability?”

“No. They can’t choose which part of them gets stronger. The souls will automatically nourish your body according to what type of demon you were born to.” She explained.

Seeing that Blake still looked as if he had more questions unanswered, she continued,

“To simplify it, there are two types of demons, the physical type and the mage type. Both of them can use runes. But as their name suggested, the physical type mostly used their huge body, sharp claws, or any of their distinctive physical traits and rarely drew runes or even studied them because their runes were ingrained in their body and they can just activate it when they want to.”

“While the mage type was the complete opposite, instead of having a strong physical trait, they are good at controlling the nether in our surroundings, and by learning how to draw runes, they were able to cast different kinds of versatile spells to fight instead of biting or punching their opponents.”

“The wolves earlier were the example of the physical type, while you and me here are examples of mage-type demons.” She finally finished explaining.

“I see, then the only thing that would be getting stronger the more I eat souls is my ability to use the nether better right?”

‘That means my earlier thoughts were correct. I should put all the unused stats into the spirit stat...’

“Not exactly.” Vera suddenly said, stopping Blake from dumping his 10 points into his spirit stat.

“While it’s true that our ability to control the nether will be the main point that will receive significant improvement from the souls, our physical body would also get stronger, albeit in a much smaller ratio compared to our ability to control nether.”

‘Ah! I almost messed up!’ Blake cried inwardly before releasing a sigh of relief.

“Alright, thanks for the explanation, Vera.”

Blake then returned to his status screen, before asking in his head,

‘How do I put the unused points to the stats that I wanted?’

[Just say how many points you want to put into which stats.] The system’s voice chimed in.

‘Alright, just to be safe for now, let’s not make the balance too different from each other.’

Blake then proceeded to put 4 points into his physique stat while the rest 6 points into his spirit stat.

After walking for some time, the two finally arrived at a decent-sized clearing in the forest, enough for Blake to roll around his body a hundred times from one side of the clearing to the other.

“We’ve arrived. Welcome to my house.” Vera suddenly said while pointing at the middle of the clearing.

Blake was excited when he heard this, but when he followed Vera’s fingers, he was confused as he didn’t see anything in the middle of the clearing.

As he was about to ask Vera where was the home she was talking about, Vera drew some runes on the air in front of the clearing, and when she finally finished drawing the runes, the runes once again disappeared into thin air before it finally revealed a black circular portal, and Vera promoted Blake to go through the portal.

Blake was quite unsure since the black portal looked ominous, but since Vera had gone in first, he soon followed her inside the portal.

And when he stepped out of the ominous dark portal, he was frozen in place as the stark difference between the portal and the things that were hidden behind it.

A two-story wooden house that was built with sturdy-looking and glistening wood stood in the middle of the clearing, and on both sides of the house, even encompassing the back of the house was a garden full of beautiful flowers ranging in colors from red to the red sun until as blue as the blue sea that Blake had seen back in his own world. He didn’t know whether Vera did it intentionally or not, but the colors of the plants were complementing each other as even with all kinds of different stark colors in front of his eyes, he felt that the garden was a beautiful painting that was both relaxing and mesmerizing to look at.

“Let me repeat this again. Welcome to my home.” She said with a smile that rivaled the beauty of the garden itself.
