When he said that, his high-spirited face revealed a hurt expression for the first time, exposing Carlos’s weakness.

“John, you know that I can’t forget Jessica. I caused her death. It’s my fault…”

John appeared tense, and he pursed his lips, not saying anything.

He knew who the girl Carlos was talking about. She was Jessica Godfrey, and she was the woman Carlos loved.

Three years ago, Carlos met Jessica at a party, and it was love at first sight. Soon, Carlos started to pursue Jessica crazily.

He was not only handsome and had a good family background, but he was a great sweet-talker when he had his eyes on someone. Not long after, Jessica agreed to be with Carlos, and they became an enviable couple.

Carlos and Jessica were madly in love, and they kept showing off their love publicly, causing his friends to tease him all the time.

Then, Jessica got pregnant, and the two families decided on a date for their marriage.

At that time, Carlos thought he was the happiest man on earth, and he wore a blissful smile on his face every day.

Nonetheless, the good days never last. On the day Jessica gave birth, Carlos was framed by his cousin, and he was imprisoned.

Jessica had always been weak. Hence, when she heard the news, she panicked. That night, she had complications during her labor, and neither did she or her child survive.

After that, Carlos was successfully released from prison due to his family’s influence, and took his revenge on his cousin.

However, Jessica was dead, and so was Carlos’s child.

Such an incident was a huge blow for Carlos, and he felt utterly hopeless. Since that day, he lived in guilt…

It was also because of this matter that Carlos became frivolous, and he was never sincerely involved with another woman anymore.

At least, until he met Cassie…The woman was like a thug, dominating Carlos and forcing him to marry her.

In his opinion, it was better to marry Kathleen than Cassie. At the very least, Kathleen was sensible, obedient, and not annoying.

“I’ve discussed it with my parents, and they approve of my marriage with Kathleen. However, you have the last say!”

Carlos turned to John and said, “I know what you’re worried about! Moreover, you don’t have to worry about anything. Even if I get engaged to Kathleen, I won’t touch her!”

Then, Carlos’s gaze was slightly swaying. “After all, I only have Jessica and our child in my heart…”

John quietly looked at John, not saying anything.

Carlos continued, “John, I know you like Kathleen, and I know why you’re marrying Sherri. You want Sherri to be a guise. Nonetheless, aren’t you going to marry Sherri in the end? Do you want Kathleen to be a shameful mistress? Will Kathleen be willing?”

That would be so unfair for Kathleen.

“Who told you that I’m going to let Kathleen be my mistress?”

“What else could it be? Are you going to marry your adopted daughter, Kathleen, publicly?”

“This is none of your concern!”

Carlos frowned. “John, listen to me. I won’t harm you, nor would I hurt Kathleen!”

“That’s enough! Let’s not talk about this anymore! I won’t agree to it!”

John looked at Carlos and warned him, “Don’t mention anything about the engagement anymore!”

After saying that, John turned around and left.

Carlos grinned, then he looked at John with a complicated gaze. “You’ll regret it sooner or later, John. I’ll wait until you change your mind.”

John ignored Carlos. He opened the car door and drove away.

Carlos sat on a reef at the shore, watching the sky slowly turned red, dark, and black. He had not realized that it was late at night, and he could not even see the road in front of him clearly.

Carlos sighed, took out his phone, and made a call.

When John reached home, the sun was already setting.

The setting sun gave a red tinge to the sky, and the white clouds were illuminated by the sunlight, showing a captivating hue of orange.

In the dining hall, Kathleen was sitting alone at the table, eating in silence.

When she saw John, she hurriedly stood and greeted him, “Young Master, I thought you were not coming back for dinner.”

John answered coldly, “Where else would I go for dinner?”

Kathleen lowered her head. “I’ll get a bowl of rice for you, Young Master!”

Then, she filled a bowl with rice and placed it on the table, serving John.

John liked to eat fish, so she removed the fishbones and placed the meat on his plate.

John liked prawns, so she peeled the prawns and placed them on his plate.

Kathleen was really considerate, and John’s expression softened when he saw that.

John looked at her with his profound gaze, ordering her, “Feed me!”

Kathleen was stunned, but she still fed him the fish on his plate.

The fish was fresh and delicious, and John felt more at ease.

Kathleen sized his expression up and down, asking, “Do you still want to eat more?”

“As long as you’re feeding me, I’ll eat it!”

Kathleen nodded, and she picked another piece of fish, feeding John.

Seeing her being so obedient, John was more relaxed.

Then, he looked at Barkley and waved his hands. “The rest of you are dismissed. Kathleen will serve me!”

Barkley nodded. After that, he left with the other maids.

Kathleen looked at him and tensed up. She thought that he was about to do something to her.

Unexpectedly, John did not do anything over the line, and he just ate.

Kathleen felt relieved.

After dinner, John went upstairs, and Kathleen followed him.

When they were in his room, she helped John remove his coat and started helping him clean up.

John stared at Kathleen with his profound gaze, and there seemed to be complicated emotions in his eyes.

Kathleen started to blush, and she murmured, “I’ll sanitize your prosthetic leg, Young Master!”

As she said that, she quickly left the washroom and entered the bedroom.

When John came out in his wheelchair, he saw Kathleen sitting on a chair, wiping his prosthetic leg. Her face was beautiful and innocent, and her long hair fell charmingly.

However, her expression was dispassionate, and he could not tell what she was feeling.

John pulled her up and met her eyes. “Kathleen, do you feel aggrieved from serving me every day?”

Kathleen looked at him and answered indifferently, “I don’t feel aggrieved. Serving you is what I should do, Young Master. Aren’t I here to clear my debt?”

“What if one day I said your debt was paid, and you’re free?” John stared at her. “Have you thought about this before?”

Kathleen was dumbfounded, and she looked at John with a cold gaze. “Will there be such a day?”

John was caught off guard. “No! There won’t be such a day! Never!”

“If that’s so, why did you ask me that?” Kathleen lowered her head and started to wipe his prosthetic leg again.

“Do you want to leave me?” John grabbed Kathleen’s shoulders and asked, “Tell me, do you want to leave me?”

Kathleen frowned. He was shaking her too hard. “Young Master, I don’t! I know I owe you, so I’ll always stay by your side and pay the debt!”

“Even if you can never clear your debt?”

Kathleen stared at him, stupefied, and said nothing else..
