Chapter 10

Her dad was dead. He had been executed for driving under the influence of alcohol, causing the truck to topple over. A married couple was crushed to death and a boy had lost a leg.

She was dumbfounded when she saw the cold body of her dad.

Since then, she lost a dad and became afraid of the stormy night.

Kathleen’s heart tensed up in fear like a bow that had its string pulled completely, her face deathly pale.

Tears trickled down her cheeks as the sound of thunder and rain became louder and louder.

Just then, John opened her door and walked into her room.

He flipped open the blanket and saw Kathleen curling up on the bed, her eyes swimming in tears. “Kathleen, don’t be scared. I’m here…” he said in a deep voice.

When Kathleen raised her pale, tearful face and saw John showing up in her room, all her fears faded away. She burst into tears and threw herself into John’s embrace.

She grabbed tightly onto his pajamas and did not let go as she wept, just like what she did when she was little.

John wrapped his arms around her shivering body, pressing her tightly against his chest, and lightly patted her back.

“It’s okay, it’s okay…I’m here…”

His movement was gentle, each stroke like a quiet comfort to her. She started to loosen up.

He had not known after how long, but she fell asleep sometime later.

John looked down at Kathleen, the streams of tears on her pretty face made her look extremely pitiful.

He gently wiped away her tears and fell into a deep sleep with her in his arms.

The next morning, the rain had already stopped and daylight had filled the room.

The rays of sunlight pierced through the clouds and shone on the ground, as though the thunderstorm of the previous night was all a dream.

Kathleen saw John’s stunning face as soon as she opened her eyes.

The memories of the previous night came flooding into her mind as she stared blankly at John.

His forehead was clear and well-shaped, brows thick, eyelashes lush and long, and handsome face perfectly angular.

His face was flawless, as if God had really taken time to mold him personally.

In all the years she had known him, this was the first time she had attentively studied his face.

Was she afraid of him? Of course she was.

John was overbearing, brutal, cold-blooded, and aggressive. Surely there was no one who was not afraid of him.

Still, she could not leave him despite her fear, for he would wrap his arms around her on every rainy night and coax her to sleep.

In that year, when he reached out his hand and asked her to go with him, she felt like he was the only person in the world who could protect her. That was why she reached out her small hands to him.

Over the past decade, this man had infiltrated into all aspects of her life. He was everywhere.

He offered her protection but at the same time restrained her freedom.

As it said in the book, those who could protect you from the wind and rain could also make you live in an abyss of darkness.

However, Kathleen had never forgotten her duty all along.

She was here to pay off her debts. Once her debt was paid off, she would leave…

Her constant staring finally woke John up. He looked into her bright eyes and said in a raspy voice, “How much longer are you going to stare at me?”

Kathleen was slightly shocked. Having realized that John had woken up, she awkwardly tore her gaze away from him, her face blushing a little.

John tilted his head and stared at Kathleen, his handsome face was unreadable. “You’ve been staring at me for so long early in the morning. Do you have feelings for me?”

“Listen, Kathleen. You’re still very young, give up the idea that you ought not to have! Besides, I have a fiancée!”

Kathleen looked down and said indifferently, “No, I was just waiting for you to wake up. I didn’t dare to move because I was afraid that I would wake you up…”

“Is that so?” John’s face slightly darkened as he glared at Kathleen and snorted, “Glad to hear that!”

He glanced up at the clock, got out of bed and left her room.

Before he left, he purposely sneaked a look at Kathleen and found her face remain indifferent. She did not give him any response.

John’s expression was grim. ‘I did her the courtesy of accompanying her last night as I know she’d be afraid of the storm, but she didn’t even say thank you.’

He went back to his own room and looked at the neat, perfectly spotless room.

The glamorous chandelier, expensive decorations and soft carpet were still there, yet John felt ineffable loneliness.

‘What’s wrong with me? I feel like my room is so empty and lonely.’

He pressed his lips tightly together as he recalled the scene that had happened earlier and suddenly realized that Kathleen’s room had a very homey atmosphere.

Sherri had arrived early at Lambert’s residence to visit John. Her face screwed up in fury when she saw John coming out of Kathleen’s room.

He was wearing silky blue pajamas. She could tell from his unkempt hair and lazy look that he had just woken up.

‘He just walked out of Kathleen’s room, which means he had been sleeping with Kathleen last night!’

That thought drove Sherri crazy. She felt like an angry beast as she wanted to rip Kathleen apart.
