Chapter 5: Rejection That Causes Obsession (2)

Today began and was just as ruthless as yesterday. Apparently she crawled into the bed, fluttered the covers and held the position till morning. Chloe couldn’t understand why Rosie was screaming in front of her.

“My Lady!!”

“… uh?”

“Wake up! Do you know how many times I called you?”

“What? Morning already?”

“What do you mean already? I woke you up an hour later than usual.”

“No way!”

“Absolutely yes.”

With Rosie’s blatant answer, Chloe washed, dressed, ate and drank without hesitation.

“I worked yesterday, why did I get more?!”

She had to suffer from a much thicker stack of documents. She tried to pretend she was sick because her injured butt was sore from the fall last night.

“Shall I put on another cushion?”

None of these tricks worked. In the end, Chloe could only get out of the office after handling even more documents than yesterday.

“Huh…”

Her shoulders ached, her back hurt, and her eyes were dim. Chloe walked down the hallway while groaning in pain, suddenly saw the bright red sunlight through the corridor window and ran.

“No, the sun is already setting! Isn’t it too short a day?”

Chloe, muttering, looked almost like she was crying. And that night, as dark darkness fell, a slender young Lady moved her butt and left the Duke’s residence.

Knock Knock.

At the small sound of knocking on the window, Rayleigh put down the book he was reading and headed towards the terrace. As he pulled back the curtains to check who it was, Roy looked up and raised her hand as if asking him to open the door.

“Oh, my…”

It was good she knocked when previously she put a log through the window. It was cute to see him being steady in an unexpected corner. As soon as Rayleigh opened the door, Roy squeezed inside.

“Ah, it’s cold.”

Roy’s pale lips shivered as she passed by him. The night breeze was getting colder day by day as the harvest season was coming to an end. The distance from the main gate to the main palace was considerably far, but Roy was infiltrating, so it would take even longer. Rayleigh lightly pushed Roy, who was rubbing her forearms, into the chair he had been sitting in. It’s close to the fireplace, so it’s warm and the chairs were soft; quite the comfortable place to sit down. The vigilance of Theodore was still great, but if she did not do this, she would not be able to warm up.

“Ugh!”

Rayleigh’s face was stiffened by Roy’s one word. Roy’s bursting sound was far from surprising. Her sharp and skinny shoulders and clearly crumpled eyebrows.

“Are you hurt?”

When Rayleigh asked, Roy only closed her eyes for a long time. Just before his patience was about to run out, she answered.

“Don’t worry, Your Highness. I tend to make a clear distinction between public and private matters. I can do well without disturbing my work.”

A reply without letting him know the reason, leaked out from Roy.

“How?”

What did she think of me as?

“Sorry to bother you.”

As Roy gently shook her hands, Rayleigh suddenly felt like a nervous wreck. He knew that the relationship was made half by force and half by blackmail. It’s a fact that ‘trust’ can’t be built overnight. As long as he has the last name of ‘Theodore’, it would be difficult to get her to lower her guard.

Didn’t you write the contract as you wished?

And yet… no, he wouldn’t let himself be bitter just because he didn’t know she would think him as ruthless.

“You.”

“What?”

“No.”

Rayleigh, seeing her bright blue eyes, rubbed his face with a big sigh.

“Come on, read it.”

The papers he threw fell to the table in front of Roy, making a heavy sound.

“Uh? This is from yesterday?”

“Look again.”

“Again? Why?”

“Can you memorize it?”

“It’s not perfect, but I understand it roughly–.”

“Read.”

He wasn’t a layman, but a ‘Theodore’ is still mean and ruthless.

“…..”

“Read, read! Stop staring at me!”

He was just worried and glaring when looking at her. He did not know where or how much it hurt, but he could not let it go. If he told her to rest until she was healed, it was clear that she would be on the alert like a bushy tailed rabbit. Didn’t she run away astounded at the ‘favor’ of him giving out an emergency exit yesterday? The feeling of regret grew bigger and bigger, and his speech became cooler.

“Abandon the mindset of being rough about what I’ve asked you to do.”

“Yes, sir. Sure thing.”

“If you understand, read it.”

“If you’re a king, how about memorizing?”

“I know it well.”

“Wow.”

A night like yesterday began again with the sound of paper turning. In a moment, both Roy and Rayleigh started to turn the paper in their hands with terrifying concentration. It was Rayleigh who was faster. He had been processing these papers for a while. It was a tremendous speed compared to the fact that 30 sheets were barely processed throughout the day. What was it? Rayleigh tilted his head and suddenly realized why he couldn’t concentrate all morning. Roy. It was because of the bad guy in front of him. He couldn’t concentrate on his work all day thinking of the guy who fled and ran away as if his favor was a plague.

“Hmm…”

How could she just refuse from the beginning to the present every time, every moment? His eyes narrowed as he watched Roy flip through the papers. A man of contrived design.
