Brainoid

Chapter 3 Cooperation #

When Qi Min left the laboratory, she had completed five of her six major cycles. The last one deals with the up-down cascade relationship between neurons, so it takes an extra long time.

She left school with her computer and took the subway back to her friend's house where she was staying.

Qi Min’s friend is Yan Zhaolan, who was also her classmate in college. Because she did not have a direct PhD, she first studied for a master’s degree and has not yet graduated with a doctorate. But because she was studying for a Ph.D. at one of the top two universities in China, she got married while studying for a Ph.D. If she hadn't had a close relationship with Qi Min when they were in school, she probably wouldn't have let Qi Min live in her home.

However, Qi Min knew that it would be a nuisance for her to live in the couple's home. After returning home, he went into his bedroom and never came out unless necessary.

She entered the room at five o'clock in the afternoon, connected to the Internet, opened Jupyter, and started tinkering with her code again. After running the sixth major cycle, she is equivalent to running a connector of 256^(3)=25616777216 virtual neurons. However, this is still far behind the number of neurons in the human brain (about 86 billion). four orders of magnitude.

This can only be regarded as a beta version of the brain-like body, but Qi Min can already do something with it. The simplest testing method is to do machine learning. There are a lot of ready-made codes on Github. Qi Min randomly found a piece of code and posted it, adjusted various parameters and let it start running.

This seemed to be running without any problems, but after a while Qi Min's cell phone rang.

"Hey, are you Teacher Qi Min from the Biology Department?" the person over there said, "I am the administrator of the school's computing center. Are you the one who has been running the code?"

"Uh... maybe it's me." Qi Min replied nervously.

"Can you please stop for a moment? The computer room is overloaded, causing the medical department to lose power again." said the administrator of the computing center.

"Oh...I'm sorry..." Qi Min apologized quickly, but she glanced at Jupyter and saw that half of the code was already running. The supercomputer has its own backup power supply, so it can actually last for a long time.

You can fight for it. Qi Min added: "But it's not necessarily a problem with the computer room. When the weather is hot, the physiological medicine laboratory consumes a lot of power."

"That's what we say, but the power consumption of the supercomputer room is also too high." The administrator of the computing center said, "You'd better stop for a while, so that we can explain it to the teachers of the Department of Medicine."

People have said this, and Qi Min is too embarrassed to continue running her code.

She paused the code she was running and asked the phone again: "Is it okay?"

"Hey, it will be done right away. No problem, thank you." The administrator of the computing center said quickly, "Please wait... for two hours, and then continue running."

Qi Min waited for two hours, but when she restarted the code, she found that the code running speed had obviously slowed down. She went to the computing center to check and found that her computing resource allocation was limited to 30%, while her code had been running with 50% of the computing resources before.

This is really unpleasant. But Qi Min has no choice. After all, the computing center is shared by other departments in the school except the computer department, and the biology department probably won't break up with the computing center because of her project, which is used for funding and writing articles.

But originally using 50% of the computing resources, it already took a whole day to run a 256×256×256 connector. In the future, using 30% of the computing resources to run a full-size brain-like body, I really don’t know what year it will be. The month goes by.

Qi Min felt that this wouldn't work and she had to find another way.

——

Soon this "other way" came to her on its own.

On Saturday, Yan Zhaolan's school held a doctoral forum. Because there was a free lunch, Yan Zhaolan took Qi Min with him.

At the doctoral student forum meeting, Qi Min learned that the School of Life at Yan Zhaolan's school had a cooperative project with the supercomputer "Nimbus" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and "Nimbus" is much more powerful than the supercomputer in the computing center that Qi Min is currently using. . The important thing is that the supercomputer of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has its own power supply system, at least it will not compete with any medical department laboratory for power.

Qi Min originally didn't want to trouble Yan Zhaolan anymore, but it was related to whether she could pass the annual assessment, so she still had to ask Yan Zhaolan to introduce her to the teachers of the "Yuyun" team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Yan Zhaolan heard her talk about this and immediately agreed: "Of course, my boss is in contact with the teacher over there. Come with me..."

Yan Zhaolan led Qi Min to an old gentleman and a middle-aged lady who were talking. Qi Min recognized the old man wearing a blue suit and a distinctive colorful tie as Yan Zhaolan's doctoral supervisor, Professor Zheng Wenyu. The lady he was talking to had a visitor ID, so she must be a teacher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Mr. Zheng Wenyu is a very kind person. When he saw his student coming, he introduced Yan Zhaolan to his collaborator: "Xiaoshan, this is the one I mentioned before. Our laboratory does 3D printing and culture of stem cells. Zhao Lan, a doctoral student.”

"Hello, Teacher Zhou." Yan Zhaolan shook hands with the lady who should be named Zhou Xiaoshan.

Ms. Zhou Xiaoshan probably thought that Mr. Zheng’s students had something to do with him, so she left temporarily because she wanted to sign the signatures for the junior doctoral students who came to register.

Mr. Zheng Wenyu asked Yan Zhaolan: "What's the matter, Zhaolan?"

"Teacher Zheng, this is my undergraduate classmate Qi Min." Yan Zhaolan pulled Qi Min over and introduced her to her tutor, "She is now..."

She forgot which school Qi Min got his teaching position from, but fortunately Qi Min added in time: "It's the University of Science and Technology of China."

"Yes, University of Science and Technology of China." Yan Zhaolan quickly answered, "She is doing bioinformatics and wanted to ask if she could cooperate with us and use the 'Nimbus' supercomputer together."

"University of Science and Technology of China..." Mr. Zheng Wenyu hesitated for a moment. It’s really not surprising that people would hesitate. Yan Zhaolan received an undergraduate degree from a top 2 university in China and a PhD from another top 2 university. Since Qi Min was Yan Zhaolan's classmate, Mr. Zheng assumed that she was still studying for a Ph.D., but she turned out to be a low-ranking 985 student at the University of Science and Technology of China with a ranking of at least double digits, which was really hard to trust.

However, the University of Science and Technology of China is still a university in Beijing, and local schools should cooperate with each other. This matter is actually about borrowing the computing resources of "Nimbus", which is not too troublesome in itself, and Mr. Zheng Wenyu cannot refuse it.

"Okay, bioinformatics and interdisciplinary subjects deserve support." Mr. Zheng said, "Send me the project plan and I will discuss it with Teacher Zhou Xiaoshan from the Chinese Academy of Sciences."

This is basically equivalent to agreeing. Qi Min quickly thanked you: "Then... thank you so much..."

She wanted to say something more, but Yan Zhaolan secretly pulled her away.

Arriving in a corner away from the big names in the academic world, Yan Zhaolan patted her angrily: "Zhou Xiaoshan from the Chinese Academy of Sciences is right there. Why don't you talk to her directly? And why are you mumbling when talking to my boss?" You are a serious laboratory PI who has obtained a teaching position, why should you be nervous?"

"That's different. Here are all the big guys from the top 2 universities, and I'm just a loser from the Chinese Technical School..." Qi Min explained hesitantly.

"Screw you, you went to the same school as me, and we were top students back then." Yan Zhaolan rolled his eyes at her, then turned around and saw someone bringing desserts for the tea break, "Forget it, let's eat something first. Say it again."

I won’t say which TOP2 university it is, so as not to start a fight_(:з」∠)_
