Big Country Technology Starts with Mobile Phones

Chapter 86 Dual flagship folding screens

Samsung S6 has a curved screen and the blessing of the Samsung brand, but it also has shortcomings, such as a non-full screen and slow charging speed.

In terms of price, it's not bad, because people who choose mobile phones in the price range of more than 4,000 yuan no longer care about the cost-effectiveness of this phone.

Liu Dalang remembers that when Samsung S6 was just released in China, the starting price for 3+32GB was 5,088 yuan, and it was not a full Netcom version.

Coupled with Samsung's hype, ordinary people who want to buy a Samsung S6 have to pay a premium to buy it. At the highest, the premium exceeded 1,000.

This is very different from the later diving stars. Without Nebula Technology, Samsung and Apple this year would be invincible in China.

But now that Liu Dalang is here, he will not let Samsung and Apple have such an easy time in the Chinese market. I heard that Samsung S6 is a representative of high-end phones?

He didn't believe in this evil. Apart from the much-hyped 2k curved screen, the other parameters of Samsung S6 were not that eye-catching compared to Xingyu-Ning.

This time for Xingyu-Ning, he plans to raise the starting price to 3,999 because he is confident in the crystal diamond craftsmanship, Nebula flash charging and full-screen design.

And he also has a killer weapon in his hand, which is the high refresh screen of Xingyu-Ning and Xingyu Tablet. The impact of 90hz high refresh screen is self-evident.

Compared with curved screens, these are things that consumers can actually feel, and the price of 3,999 is not low for an emerging brand.

But this does not mean that the price-performance ratio of Xingyu-Ning is very low. On the contrary, its price-performance ratio is far higher than that of products on the market at the same price or even higher.

Liu Dalang's pricing strategy is relatively conservative because Nebula Technology does not have the brand influence of Samsung and Apple, and its market share is not high enough.

He needs Xingyu-Ning to truly impact the Chinese market and raise Nebula Technology's market share to a new level. At the same time, he will not give up the exploration of Nebula Technology's flagship machine.

Zhang Jianzhi has already taken the Nebula S Fold to explore overseas markets, while the Nebula Technology R&D Department is researching new hinge technology.

If you want to make a good folding screen, it is not enough to fold the screen outwards. Folding screens inward folding are the development trend, but folding inwards has a fatal flaw.

That’s the crease. The crease may not be obvious on a new phone you just bought, but after using it for a period of time, the crease will greatly affect the visual appearance.

This is because the ordinary folding method is like a piece of paper. You have to press it again to fold it in half. Over time, there will naturally be obvious creases.

There are two ways to solve the creases. One is to thicken the fuselage. Like the Motorola razr, make the fuselage so thick that it does not need to be folded in half.

The second is to develop hinge technology. Like Huawei mate x2, hinge technology is used to make the creases shallower, but it is not completely crease-free.

The principle is very simple. Since there will be creases when the paper is folded in half, just bend the paper without pressing it so much that it will not have creases.

Hinge technology is not that difficult to research, and it can also hover at multiple angles, which is very cost-effective in terms of time and cost.

In fact, Liu Dalang can be like Samsung's folding screen. It doesn't matter if the crease is heavy, and it can be used as a gimmick to sell a high-priced folding screen alone.

But he won't do that. Nebula Technology wants to make money, but it will never be sloppy in its products and sell a defective product to the Chinese people.

At the same time, he also wanted to make Nebula Technology’s flagship phone less likely to be copied by rival companies.

As soon as he said it, he immediately found Qu Xiangqun, the director of the design department, and they went to the R&D department to discuss the design plan. There were two design plans:

“I hope we can make a large-sized folding screen phone, just like the Nebula S Fold, and also make a small-sized one!”

To put it simply, it is a horizontal folding screen phone that looks like a small tablet when unfolded, and there is also a vertical folding screen phone.

The size after unfolding is no different from an ordinary candy bar phone, but after folding it becomes very compact, like a rouge box.

There is no need to think about vertical folding screen mobile phones. It is still a market for sophisticated people, and at the same time, the starting price of the folding screen can be lowered to less than 10,000.

He has even thought of the names. The foreign versions are called Nebula S Fold2 and Nebula S Flip, but they definitely cannot be called that in China.

The flagship phone of Nebula Technology is either named after Nebula or the 88 internationally accepted constellations, without even adding any numbers.

There are 28 constellations in the northern sky, 12 constellations in the zodiac, and 48 constellations in the southern sky. One name for a flagship phone is enough for Nebula Technology to produce a flagship phone for more than 20 years.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t remember clearly, because each model is unique. In order to reflect the identity of the flagship machine, Nebula Technology will also limit the number.

And each flagship phone is marked with a serial number. Some special serial numbers can also be used to increase prices and increase brand influence.

Of course, the premise of all this is that Nebula Technology’s folding screen flagship phone is amazing enough, and at the same time it also needs to increase the popularity of folding screens.

Samsung can promote the popularity of curved screens, and Nebula Technology can also promote the popularity of foldable screens. This is very simple. In the end, consumers have to foot the bill.

In order to increase the stunningness of the folding screen flagship, Liu Dalang also decided to make an interest screen display. If he wanted to do this, he had to use LTPO technology.

Simply put, LTPO is an adaptive refresh rate, which can lower the refresh rate to 1hz when the phone is not in use.

It's easy to do the screen-off display, but what's difficult is to keep the screen off for a long time without affecting the battery life.

Nebula Technology has a high-refresh screen, but the LTPO technology has not yet been completely conquered. They can only use a similar smart refresh rate instead.

In addition, Liu Dalang also made a detailed design for the folding screen flagship. Qu Xiangqun and the people in the R&D department were dumbfounded after hearing:

"Is this okay? Chairman! I thought Cook was a master at cutting leeks, but I didn't expect you to be the ruthless one! Isn't this... too ruthless?"

"What does it mean to cut leeks? We provide these functions to consumers for free. We do research and development for free? This is called fighting if one is willing to suffer!"

Liu Dalang denied Qu Xiangqun's statement that he was cutting leeks. How could a businessman's business be called cutting leeks? Isn't his design perfect?

If it's perfect, what's wrong with consumers paying a little extra? Is this a problem?

In addition to the folding screen dual flagships, Liu Dalang also designed the next-generation Spark and Xingyu.

The biggest highlight of the next-generation Spark gaming phone is that it has a 120hz high-brush LCD screen, and it will no longer use Qualcomm's Fire Dragon.

Because there are still four chips on the market that can compete head-on with Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, excluding the A series and Kirin chips, there are two remaining chips.

One is Samsung's Exynos 7420. Meizu mx5 Pro used this Samsung chip in this Fire Dragon incident.

The other one is Nvidia's Tegra X1. This chip has explosive performance and is comparable to entry-level discrete graphics, but it has a fatal flaw.

His baseband is not as good as Qualcomm Snapdragon's baseband. If Nvidia chips are used, Liu Dalang will have to consider plugging in Qualcomm's baseband.

From a cost point of view, it is obvious that even if Nvidia's Tegra X1 can rub the Apple A8x on the ground, no mobile phone manufacturer will choose it.

Therefore, this chip is more used in car computers, tablets, and switches.

Liu Dalang doesn't want to use Samsung's chips. Isn't this a case of capitalizing on the enemy? Of course, using Nvidia's chips is also an advantage, and it will definitely not be as good as our own.

According to information from the R&D department, they will be able to design a chip with a 20nm process or below in up to a year and a half.

But within a year and a half, next door Samsung and TSMC have already achieved technological breakthroughs, and Chang Gung Geng chips are still unable to be used in flagship phones.

This is a bit uncomfortable, but the good news is that 20nm mid-range chips can be used in low-end machines and can be sold in large quantities.

After careful consideration, Liu Dalang decided to purchase a batch of Nvidia's Tegra X1 in advance to test whether it would work.

Samsung’s Exynos 7420 is also needed, because there is no choice. It can be used on both Spark phones and folding screens.

Of course, the release time of the next-generation Spark gaming phone depends on the launch time of three Star Entertainment games and Penguin’s several large-scale mobile games.

Even if there are no games, a gross gaming phone will be released, and there are still a group of users who have Spark-Chi who are urging them on Nebulas Weibo every day.

Fortunately, Star Interactive Entertainment is making good progress. All three games have completed preliminary design, and more than half of the modeling has been completed.

This also confirms the saying that as long as funds are provided, a house can be built in one day.

As for the next generation of Xingyu, since curved screens are already unstoppable, let’s simply divide the next generation of Xingyu mobile phones into straight screen and curved screen versions.

It just so happens that with the curved screen design, the price of Xingyu mobile phones can be raised to a higher level.

Of course, these are things for later, Xingyu-Ning hasn’t been released yet, so it’s useless for Liu Dalang to worry.

From January to March, there is a Spring Festival in between. On the occasion of the Spring Festival, Nebula Technology held an annual summary meeting.

The content of the meeting was very simple. Liu Dalang read the data, the senior management applauded, set a new year's goal, and finally handed out a year-end bonus and so on.

“We released a total of three mobile phones in 2014, namely the Xinghuo-Lie and Chi of the Xinghuo series, and the Xingyu-Mu of the Xingyu series!

The total sales volume of Xinghuo Lie was 5.02 million units, the total sales volume of Xinghuo Chi was 4.18 million units, and the total sales volume of Xingyu Mu was 6.19 million units!

The total sales of Nebula mobile phones exceeded 15 million units, successfully ranking among the top ten in China! "

The top ten are Samsung, Lenovo, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, Coolpad, vivo, oppo, ZTE, and Nebula.

If Nebula Technology adds the sales of Dalang mobile phones, it will be no problem to directly reach fifth or sixth place, because the sales volume of Dalang mobile phones is very high.

The worst thing is Xiaomi. Originally, Xiaomi should have been the sales leader in 2014, but due to the emergence of Dalang mobile phones, Redmi's sales were greatly reduced.

The upward momentum of Apple and Huawei is still strong. Lenovo sells more products, but its reputation is a bit average, and other manufacturers have little impact.

After Nebula Technology returned to China, it squeezed more of the market of others. LG, HTC, etc. were directly squeezed out of their survival space in the second half of the year.
