Big Country Technology Starts with Mobile Phones

Chapter 111 Dual-core linkage technology

Amid the controversy, Nebula Technology once again increased its investment in research and development. After adding scientific research personnel, the progress of Chang Gung 4 has been accelerated again.

The Chang Gung Memorial Project Team of the Nebula R&D Department stabilized the Chang Gung Memorial 4 by continuously adding cores when the star structure was not yet complete.

The ten-core design reminded Liu Dalang of the famous rollover incident in the history of MediaTek: one core was in trouble, and nine cores were watching, which made a big joke.

Chang Gung 4 also has ten cores, not only ten and three cores, but also a 20nm process technology. In theory, it is easier to overturn than MediaTek chips.

MediaTek Helio X20 also uses a 20nm process technology, and has a three-cluster and ten-core architecture that divides tasks according to severity.

The star structure was also divided according to the severity of the tasks, and it was still a three-dimensional structure. Liu Dalang really didn't have much confidence.

Theoretically speaking, the three-core and ten-core architecture is a good architecture, and the star architecture is also a good architecture. There is no problem in dividing them according to the severity of the tasks.

But theory is just theory after all. If you don’t put it into practice, you won’t know whether the chip is a good chip at all. Not even the chip manufacturer can tell for sure.

Liu Dalang also experienced the hard work of chip development. During the tape-out process of Chang Gung 4, the waiting for every test was extremely difficult.

During the power consumption test, the power consumption of Chang Geng 4's chip went off the charts. As a last resort, the Chang Geng project team had to overthrow the previous design and start over.

It is strange to say that most of the chips that have overturned in history have been based on the 20-nanometer process. Is there really a problem with the 20-nanometer process?

The Chang Geng project team did not believe in evil and increased the number of cores in Chang Geng 4 to twelve. To everyone's surprise, the twelve cores were successful!

Liu Dalang:? ? ?

Chang Geng Project Team:? ? ?

What's happening here? Liu Dalang suddenly understood why the Chang Geng project team had told him before that he did not dare to develop the star structure until he understood it thoroughly.

NIL technology is also weird. In fact, they don't know that NIL technology is not suitable for research and development and is suitable for directly copying drawings.

From the name of NIL: nanoimprint technology, we know that this is a mass production method after realizing high-end chip production, which will save costs.

Therefore, the best way to use it is to take the existing drawings from TSMC, Samsung, Intel and other manufacturers and directly improve them for mass production.

But the actual conditions simply do not allow it. Why should manufacturers such as Samsung and Intel provide their high-end chip drawings to Nebula Technology?

So what if it saves costs? If you can produce it yourself, why should you hand it over to Nebula Technology for OEM? Just to save costs?

Maybe it really works!

The money is attractive. If Nebula Technology's OEM can save them a considerable amount of costs, they may really give up the current model.

However, the gap between Nebula Technology and Samsung and Intel manufacturers is not only a cost issue, but also some factors that cannot be ignored.

Therefore, Nebula Technology and these international manufacturers are destined to be competitors. If they want to cooperate, it will be impossible unless the Earth Alliance is established.

The Chang Geng project team is also a group of ruthless people. They led a group of NPCs to design Chang Geng 4 using NIL technology, and the tape-out was successful!

Although this chip is a bit outrageous, it has two more cores than the MediaTek Helio X20. Will a twelve-core processor also have one core?

Liu Dalang hoped not. This is the advantage of Nebula Technology. It has its own technology and can conduct multiple experiments in chip development and design.

As for why Samsung processors, which also have chip production lines, are so stretched, it is unknown. It may be that the involution is too serious.

TSMC announced that it has broken through the 10nm process technology. Samsung took a look, is this really a big deal? He also broke through his own technology to 10 nanometers overnight.

In fact, everyone knows that Samsung's foundry process was too eager for quick success and had defects such as leakage, making it difficult to compete with TSMC.

When producing chips with the same process technology, the chips manufactured by Samsung are completely inferior to TSMC in terms of transistor density and power consumption.

Many people question whether Samsung's foundry process is falsely reported, and it is indeed falsely reported. Not only Samsung is falsely reported, but TSMC is also falsely reported.

Liu Dalang can't remember exactly when it started. He only knows that whether it is Samsung or TSMC, nanometer is just an imaginary number.

The NIL technology of Nebula Technology is real. The number of nanometers marked is the number of nanometers. No wonder Chang Geng 4 has twelve cores.

If the chip is manufactured according to the standards of Samsung and TSMC, ten cores will definitely be enough, and twelve core chips cannot be accommodated at all.

If it is placed on a tablet or handheld computer, then it should be ignored. The size of the mobile phone chip still has requirements, otherwise the chip will heat up too seriously.

Qualcomm Snapdragon releases a few Fire Dragons every one or two generations. Whether Android manufacturers like it or not, they have no choice but to bite the bullet and promote it.

If you are lucky, you will get the first-generation U. But if you are not lucky, it will be like the Snapdragon 810, which Xiaomi Note is very confident about. The power consumption and heat generation cannot be suppressed at all.

Not only the Snapdragon 810, every generation of Snapdragon has some problems with its power consumption, but some problems are big and some are small, so they are covered up.

If the Snapdragon 810 is replaced by the Snapdragon 835, how can anyone say that this is a generation of god U? They will just think this is what a normal chip looks like.

So, the ShenU is all compared, including the so-called Kirin 9000, which is one generation better than three generations. Is the experience really that good?

Maybe not? But compared to the Snapdragon 888, the Kirin 9000 has its unique advantages, and this advantage exactly hits the pain points of users.

That's enough!

The Snapdragon 870 that major mobile phone manufacturers boast every day does not generate much heat. Actually, buy one and use it to see if it generates any fever.

It’s no wonder that later consumers are becoming more and more chip-only. To refute the chip-only theory, a premise is needed, that is, there is nothing wrong with the chip itself.

Only when the chip is fine, consumers will care more about design, texture, image, screen, battery, fast charging and other aspects.

If there are problems with the chip itself, whether it is power consumption or performance, it cannot satisfy consumers. The chip is equivalent to the brain. If the brain is not good, how can we expect other things to be good?

It’s simply impossible!

After the successful tape-out of Chang Gung Gen 4, the test team immediately summarized the measured data of Chang Gung Gen 4. The most eye-catching thing is the reduction in power consumption.

The power consumption of the twelve-core Chang Geng 4 is 146% lower than that of the ten-core Chang Geng 4. This result cannot be explained by anyone, let alone Liu Dalang.

Perhaps Chang Geng 4 has found a way to enter high-end chips, which is to add more cores to the star architecture to maintain chip stability.

But what the principle is, they haven’t found out yet. Of course, chip stability is the first priority, and they can continue to study it slowly in the future~

The R&D personnel of the Chang Geng project team really didn’t brag. After the engineering machine test data of Chang Geng 4 came out, it was indeed better than the Snapdragon 805.

Judging from the engineering machine test data, Chang Geng 4 has even reached the level of Snapdragon 808, and is only a little lower than Snapdragon 810 in some tests.

However, the test data of the engineering machine will be better. After the mobile phone is mass-produced, due to factors such as design and increased parts, the performance will not be as good as the tested engineering machine in all aspects.

These are normal conditions, so overall, Chang Gung 4 will not be as good as the Snapdragon 808 on a mass-produced machine, but it will be better than the Snapdragon 805.

Of course, the premise of this comparison method is that Nebula Technology does not have dual-core linkage technology. In fact, Liu Dalang switched to dual-core linkage technology as soon as Chang Geng 4 was successfully taped out.

It costs a lot of points, but in Liu Dalang's opinion, the dual-core linkage technology is worth the price because this technology can be used in the future.

If Nebula Technology has a chip that can compete with or even overwhelm Apple's M-series chips, and then use dual-core linkage technology, wouldn't it be a one-click way to achieve success?

What will the M1 Ultral be then? No matter how powerful Apple’s M-series chips are, how about its gaming performance? This is not necessarily the case with Nebula Technology~

You must know that the market for gaming notebooks is very broad, especially if there is a shortage of graphics cards in a certain period of time in the future, you can only buy them at a higher price.

Whether it’s a desktop or a laptop, countless consumers are willing to buy a high-performance gaming laptop despite the price increase.

What is it for?

Liu Dalang didn't know, and he didn't want to know. He only knew one thing. Computers were updated much faster than mobile phones.

Perhaps the graphics card that needs to be purchased at a higher price now will become garbage that no one cares about in the next two years. It is so cruel.

Therefore, when buying laptops, especially gaming laptops, Liu Dalang always believes that you should understand your own needs before buying.

Because only students have the greatest demand for game laptops. Every year, students tell their parents that they must have a top-end version worth more than 10,000 yuan.

In fact, you can ask yourself, do you really need such an expensive computer? Electronic products are updated so quickly, what should you do when a new model comes out?

Said so much, it is because Liu Dalang saw the hope of Nebula Technology from the mobile phone industry to enter the PC field based on Chang Geng 4.

After the mass production of Chang Gung 4 and the successful development of the astral architecture, the first thing the Nebula R&D Department did was to enter computer CPUs through the astral architecture.

This seemingly impossible thing is actually very possible, because NIL technology itself is a template technology, and you only need to manufacture the chip according to the drawing or structure.

As for how it is made, consumers don't care at all. What they care about is whether the products they buy can meet the expected standards.

Now that Chang Geng 4 has been developed, Liu Dalang will definitely not use the customized version of Nvidia Tegra X1 or Samsung Exynos 7420, but will choose to use Chang Geng 4 with dual-core linkage technology.

A single chip has performance exceeding that of Snapdragon 805, and with the support of dual-core linkage technology, two chips can achieve 1+1>2.

In terms of overall performance, Chang Geng 4×2 can even benchmark with the Snapdragon 820, with more stable power consumption and more powerful performance!

When the time comes to face the media, we can claim that Chang Gung 4×2 has reached the 10nm standard. Two 20nm = 10nm, no problem at all!

In fact, this equation is not true, because dual-core linkage technology is not a simple chip superposition, and the principles involved are very complex.

It also has a very important premise, that is, the two chips using dual-core linkage technology must have low power consumption and be stable enough overall.

Otherwise, no matter how many chips are stacked, it will be meaningless. If you stack ten or eight chips, the phone will not be able to withstand the heat before you start using it.
