Chapter 101: The Moshang Town

Translator: LiamHW

After packing everything up, Yuan Wenxuan raised his face all of a sudden looking at Song Qinghan, he asked, “Master, am I going to get an operation as well?”

Song Qinghan pondered for a moment and then said, “Let’s get your operation tomorrow, is that fine?”

If the pus shouldn’t be used so directly on a normal person, some symptoms should have been caught within one day.

Yuan Wenxuan nodded obediently and agreed.

On the other side, Doctor Shi looked rather resigned standing there while he couldn’t help comparing Yuan Wenxuan to the servant he bought, and then he sighed deeply, shaking his head and saying with resignation, “Child from the neighbor is always better than the domestic ones…”

Xia Yunfei touched the gauze on his body, he uttered suddenly, “If the pus on my body is going to run out, how can we save the villagers in such a large quantity?”

Well, this question was also the one which Doctor Shi and Yuan Wenxuan wanted to inquire. Both of them turned their face to Song Qinghan at the same time, waiting without words for Song Qinghan to open his mouth.

Song Qinghan stood still there and then answered with a wry smile, “As there is a hope, there is a way. Trust me, we can surely save all of them, but not out of the pus from you. We are going to extrude some from the cows.”

With a total stun, Xia Yunfei asked skeptically, “Cow? But we are not animals, how is that possible to …?”

Song Qinghan sighed, he decided not to make any more excuse to deceive them, he just answered toughly, “Just follow my lead, I won’t let you down.”

In the blink of an eye, the day passed again. Song Qinghan didn’t get any abnormally physical rejection while the rashes on Qingfeng’s body was getting smaller and smaller.

After confirming that his operation was correct, Song Qinghan asked Doctor Shi to vaccinate Yuan Wenxuan with the pus and then turned to those bulky men to vaccinate themselves by each other.

Doctor Shi was a bit upset at the beginning when he noticed that Yuan Wenxuan got a way faster movement than he did. But he suddenly cheered up as he took a glance at those bulky men who were all in a clumsy reaction.

Those bulky men looked really dumb fumbling on the other party’s arms and backs as if they were a group of monkeys catching louses from their skins. Though they did imitate the way how Yuan Wenxuan and Doctor Shi did, they were just way too slow-witted to get every step smooth. Some scratched broke the other’s arms with blood flowing out, some even got their white bone exposed with serious injuries. The scene was full of bawls and cries.

Finally, as all of the ruffians finished their vaccination, they lay on the ground on all sides, all of them were putting on an expression of agony on their faces. Well, that was a totally different picture compared to the one when they just came.

Just as he was about to pack things up and head to the Moshang Town, Song Qinghan suddenly thought of something and reminded Doctor Shi, “How about the servant of yours?”

Stunned, Doctor Shi rushed to the room where the servant still stayed and knocked on the door.

Doctor Shi didn’t stay with the servant in the same room but he was with Song Qinghan, he totally forgot the servant in the room while he had to be focused on the vaccination thing.

The servant inside heard the sound and approached, responding faintly and weakly, “Don’t come in… I, I got the smallpox.”

His voice was so faint that Doctor Shi didn’t even catch the last bit of his words. In thinking that the servant hadn’t had something to eat now for almost two days, Doctor Shi asked one of the bulky men to burst the door open by force. As the door opened, he rushed in hurriedly.

At that moment, the servant curled up just right in bed with the thick quilt covered tightly on himself, he stared at Doctor Shi in the eyes for a brief moment, and then tucked himself all inside the quilt.

Doctor Shi got his eyes wide open, he asked in astonishment, “Did… did you get the smallpox??”

Nobody had ever expected that the servant, the one who had acted most meticulously protecting himself, was the only one who got infected among the group. And from his physical situation, he must have had symptoms for days.

The servant sobbed and bawled inside the quilt, and cried with an emotional combination of regret and fright, “I shouldn’t have touched his hands… How about now?! I am doomed to die within days…”

After Doctor Shi regained his attention, he reached out to pull the quilt off the servant, while consoling, “it’s fine, the method Doctor Song applied did work! Come on out and find the answer yourself, Qingfeng is getting better and better. Do you still hate Doctor Song? Come on, let him get you an operation!”

Now he has completely accepted the set of statements from Song Qinghan. The words such as operation, the sewing or cutting stuff and the scalpel were quite smooth jumping out from his mouth.

The servant got his head out from the quilt slowly, and then got off the bed in a rather hesitant way. He burst out into another bawling when he found himself was quite cheeky to beg Song Qinghan, he cried with guilt and sorrow, “I don’t want to reach out to him! He will surely humiliate me verbally…”

Outside in the yard, Song Qinghan could clearly hear the bawl from the servant, he just made a gesture to Xia Yunfei and then placed the scalpel which had been disinfected in Yuan Wenxuan’s hands, saying in calmness, “Go inside and help that boy out, DON’T BE RUDE!”

Yuan Wenxuan was reluctant and stood still there as the scene of the servant kicking him on the butt popped up again in his mind, he got irritated all of a sudden and then pointed at those bulky men, saying, “Let them inside! It seems that they still need some practice.”

Song Qinghan raised his eyebrows suddenly while getting his face sullen, he sneered, saying, “Oh! So you will never save the ones who irritate you in the future? TELL ME, what’s the most significant trait for being a doctor?”

Yuan Wenxuan lowered his head and pinched the corner of his shirt, and then answered with guilt, “The kindness.”

And then, he took the initiative before Song Qinghan lectured again, saying, “Master, I am sorry. I will go inside now.”

Song Qinghan was rather proud and satisfied witnessing that Yuan Wenxuan finished the operation for the servant in calmness.

After Yuan Wenxuan came out, Song Qinghan took him to a corner, he noticed that his little disciple was keeping silence, and then he asked amusingly, “Still angry?”

Yuan Wenxuan shook his head vigorously, pondered for a while and then answered honestly, “A little bit. I know it’s bad with that emotion, but I just can’t let it go so easily.”

Song Qinghan patted Yuan Wenxuan on the shoulder and consoled him, “It’s normal to be angry. Well, I would say that if you don’t have such an emotion, you’re unhealthy. But what I want to remind you the most is that as a doctor, or let’s say, a doctor-to-be, you should learn to separate your negative emotion and your behavior. You should know that we aim to cure people, not to suppress the evil and pacify the good. That’s not our duty.”

Yuan Wenxuan thought for a moment and then asked hesitantly, “But what if a murder got injured, should we save him?”

Song Qinghan can’t help laughing while raising his eyebrows and answering, “But how can you just assert that he is the real murder? Or, should you know his intention to kill people first?”

Seeing that Yuan Wenxuan’s eyes were full of doubts, Song Qinghan knew that these were still too profound for the boy to understand and then he explained, “Let’s make an example. Suppose there are two people fighting with each other, and person A intends to kill person B while person B just wants to defend himself. In the fight of defending himself, person B kills person A unexpectedly. Then should person B bear the name of a “Murderer”? Another scenario is that person C wants to make a massacre in the village and he is right on his way to take action, but he gets killed by person D midway as person D intends to save the whole village. Is l person D another murderer? And let me put you into this picture, will you choose to save person B and the person D if they get seriously injured in the fight?”

Yuan Wenxuan stood still, dumbfounded, with his eyes fixed on Song Qinghan. He pondered for a moment, and then said in a low voice, “I don’t know…”

Song Qinghan smiled big and then touched Yuan Wenxuan’s head gently, saying, “So, my point is, saving people is the only mission for us. It’s not our duty to judge whether we’re saving an evil person or a sage, that falls to the officials. The more we get involved, the more problems we might cause.”

Hearing that, Yuan Wenxuan nodded as if he had understood everything, he promised, saying, “Okay, Master, I will try my best to separate my emotion and my behavior.”

Well, actually, in a further consideration of the whole matter, the servant actually didn’t hurt him at all. Moreover, how the servant acted was a typical reaction that failed to separate emotions and behaviors.

He secretly kept the figure of the servant as a negative example. And hopefully, he would remind himself of not being a man like that in the future.

The group headed to the Moshang Town as all of them had packed up everything.

In fact, those ruffians showed no willingness to follow Song Qinghan to the Moshang Town at all. But Song Qinghan just kept silent, he didn’t reject nor did he allow for a tacit forbearance. Every time when some of the ruffians made some excuses to leave the group, Song Qinghan just stared at them without saying anything, he stared at them coldly which frightened all the bulky men, they would think that they probably got purposely poisoned by Song Qinghan, so they don’t dare to risk their lives but obediently followed tightly behind Song Qinghan. Well, they were finally at ease when Song Qinghan informed them that as long as they finished their tasks in Moshang Town, they could leave.

Not long, the Moshang Town appeared in front. It was a town just like its name demonstrated- a town lay lonely in the desert.

Fortunately, such a town wasn’t located in the westernmost side, it got half of desert yet half of oasis. Though it wasn’t the most pleasing place to live with marvelous scenery, it was quite enough for people to settle down.

Yet, the Moshang Town nowadays seemed to be a ruined town of desolation, nothing alive could be noticed from its lifeless entrance gate but just some blasts of miserable breeze blown in the air. Everybody seemed dying in such a muffled ambience.

Xia Yunfei, the one who knew the best about the town, rushed to the head of the lead, explaining, “Since people got the smallpox, they hate to get out from their home. They are all staying in their home now.”

“By the way, should we head to the sheep farm first?” he turned to Song Qinghan and asked.

He asked so because he still remembered that Song Qinghan once mentioned about two cows which were about to be the life saver for this town.

Song Qinghan nodded, asking, “How many people are there in this town?”

Xia Yunfei pondered for a moment and frowned, answering, “Just before I went out of this town, I suppose there still existed more than one hundred people or around. Some of them got really serious symptoms. So I am not quite sure how many people there are now.”

Diseases always showed no mercy to human beings, so such an illness probably would take someone’s life in every possible second. Song Qinghan got his expression rather serious, he then ordered, “Later when we got to the farm, gather all the workers there first and get them vaccinated. And after that, Xia Yunfei and Qingfeng go and gather the other residents within the town together and separate them according to the seriousness of their symptoms. And we will make operations for them one after another.”

Everyone in the scene echoed in response and agreed, as they arrived at the sheep farm, they commenced taking action separately.

The workers in the sheep farm slowly moved out after hearing the commotion outside. They looked shocked when they saw so many unfamiliar faces out there. They got no idea whether they should go out or return to the room.

Thankfully, they still recognized Xia Yunfei and quickly asked, “Yunfei? What are these people doing here? Didn’t you go out for getting a doctor here?”

With an utter shock, Xia Yunfei felt very depressed when he noticed how the disease ruined his old fellows’s faces, he got his eyes red-rimmed all of a sudden, saying while trying to suppress the sorrow in his mind as hard as he could, “They are the doctors I brought here. You’re safe now, everybody is going to be saved!”

The farm workers stared at each other with shock. It took a long while for them to regain their attention, one of them responded, trembling, “Is, is that for real? We, we’re going to be saved?”

And after that, all of them kneeled down suddenly and kowtowed to Song Qinghan and the others in the group, crying, “Thank Buddha, thank you Doctors, thank you Doctors!”

Song Qinghan pursed his lips and took out the scalpel to disinfect without saying a word.

What he should do now was to run against the time, against the death to grab their lives back from the Yama (The king of the hell).
