103. A Strange Video (1)

As both of them refused to budge, a white cat leaped into the classroom through a window and said in human language, “If you make a phone call to Chief, He Zheng will lose his temper and Chief will compromise; if you do not make the call, Chief will find out and He Zheng will act like a spoiled child and eventually, Chief will still compromise.”

Qin Huai was thrown into a terrible shock. ‘A cat??? It’s speaking??? A cat that can speak human language???’

Tun Shanhai gracefully sat down on the windowsill, licking its paws.

“Tun Shanhai? Why did you come here? Chief is punishing you as well?!” queried Zu Zhichong.

Unable to keep up his pretence of grace, Tun Shanhai flied into a shameful rage, twisted his head around and ferociously raised his paw at Zu Zhichong. With that, a white rapid blur of movement arced across mid-air, leaving three scratches on Zu Zhichong’s face as a pained scream escaped his mouth.

Tun Shanhai sat back onto the windowsill, coldness glinting in his yin-yang pupils. “You’re too talky.”

Zu Zhichong was consumed with anger. Qin Huai gave He Zheng a pinch on the shoulder. He Zheng turned his head around in pain, glared at Qin Huai and demanded, “What are you doing?”

“I–I… Th–This cat can speak? I just want to find out if I’m in a dream.”

“The right way to find out if you’re dreaming is to pinch yourself. If you pinch me again, I’ll beat you to death.”

Qin Huai had an aggrieved face.

It was after hearing this that Tun Shanhai came to realize the presence of this outsider. Zu Zhichong gloated over Tun Shanhai’s mistake. “You’re toast, dear. A non-cultivator just found out your existence.”

For an instant Tun Shanhai’s facial expression froze, and then he took a flying leap, landed before Qin Huai and turned into a human being. Watching a white cat magically turn into a fair-skinned teenager, Qin Huai was astounded even further. On the verge of losing his mind, he shook He Zheng madly. “He–He–He–He–He Zheng! Did you see that? It turned into a human!”

“Troublesome,” Tun Shanhai muttered and then cast a Spell of Erasure on Qin Huai.

The next moment, Qin Huai, who was holding He Zheng and yelling like crazy, instantly calmed down and stared in puzzlement at his hands and feet that were wrapped around He Zheng. He put his feet down and asked, “This is weird. What am I doing?”

And then, as his eye fell on the teenager standing on the side, whose face was full of impatience, Qin Huai was transfixed with shock.

“Wh–Who’s this fella?”

Zu Zhichong gave Tun Shanhai a dirty look and laughed unnaturally, “O–Oh! He’s one of our colleagues. He just came here.”

“Someone walked in just now?”

Zu Zhichong winked repeatedly at He Zheng. Reluctantly, He Zheng said, “He came here a moment ago. You failed to notice.”

Naturally, Qin Huai believed He Zheng. He stroked his head in a silly way and replied, “I see. But this colleague of yours is so young. My brother-in-law hired a child laborer?”

‘Brother-in-law?’

Tun Shanhai and Zu Zhichong secretly cursed at the same time. ‘Son of a bitch! This guy has kinship to Chief!’

Tun Shanhai, seeing the sudden reversal of situation, didn’t dare to cold-shoulder Qin Huai any longer. He hurriedly forced a meek and mild smile, stepped closer to Qin Huai and said in a soft and saccharine voice, “I’m one of the off-staff personnel. I’ve been working for the Supernaturalism Management Bureau (SMB) since childhood. Though young, I’m quite experienced.” Qin Huai was completely bewitched by Tun Shanhai’s voice, his heart fluttering as Tun Shanhai’s eyes, each of which was of a different color, blinked. To give the devil his due, Tun Shanhai, as a descendant of an ancient unique beast, was of superior blood. After turning into a human, he was extremely charming in terms of both looks and figure, which was why Qin Huai, a childe who had seen much of the world, had got his eye on Tun Shanhai.

This fair-skinned teenager standing in front of him instantly took Qin Huai’s fancy.

“Okay, okay, I get it. Where do you live? It must be really tough to start working at such a young age, isn’t it?”

Zu Zhichong was speechless with embarrassment.

And so was He Zheng.

Tun Shanhai forced a smile and started talking with Qin Huai with subdued awkwardness.

He Zheng didn’t have the heart to see his bosom friend being fooled. Given Qin Huai’s family background, people willing to date him could form a line long enough to connect this city and Paris, yet he was here trying to woo a cat. Gripping Qin Huai’s collar, He Zheng said, “There’s nothing suspicious in this place. Does your niece have any other abnormal conduct apart from muttering ‘give me my life back’?”

After being interrupted by him, Qin Huai was sent into a brief trance. Then he recalled something and replied, “I remember that she once mumbled something about… going to an office or something like that.”

Zu Zhichong looked at his watch. It had been only five minutes since Luo Zhou left. The teacher’s office was not far away. Zu Zhichong said, “Let’s go to the office and take a look at the video first. Tun Shanhai, go to the hospital and check Xu Tianhao’s body.”

“All right.” When work was concerned, Tun Shanhai was always conscientious.

Originally, He Zheng had had no intention of taking Qin Huai with him, but he was not sure whether it was safe or not to let Qin Huai stay in this classroom. On top of this, Qin Huai’s niece was involved in this tricky issue, so he had no choice but to take Qin Huai to the office with him.

In the office, Vice-principal Wu turned on a computer and plugged a thumb drive into a USB socket on it.

Seeing the three of them walking inside, Vice-principal Wu slightly moved his upper body to one side and said, “There’s a projector here. Give me a minute. I’ll turn it on.”

They nodded. While they were waiting, Sergeant Luo’s eyes involuntarily rested on He Zheng. Sergeant Luo had many years’ acquaintance with staff members of SMB, and on occasions, he would get some inside information about this department — for example, in the normal course of events, only when a case involved something uncommon would Zu Zhichong be assigned to deal with it. ‘But this man dressed like a childe from a rich family is also a staff member of SMB?’ he wondered.

Being eyed was never a pleasant experience for He Zheng, so he impatiently knitted his eyebrows.

“What are you looking at?”

Sergeant Luo was not angered by the impolite tone of He Zheng. He gave a smile and replied, “Sorry. I’m just curious how you guys gained admission into SMB.”

The look in He Zheng’s eyes slightly changed and with that, he lifted his chin and replied haughtily, “With our strength.”

Sergeant Luo dissolved into laughter. Zu Zhichong fished the button out of his pocket and handed it to Sergeant Luo. “We found this button at the teacher’s desk a while ago. Take a look. See if it’s from the victim’s clothes.”

Ears of Vice-principal Wu slightly twitched as he heard this. When his eye fell on that button, beads of cold sweat oozed out of his forehead. “Thi–This is indeed from that student’s clothes. It’s the very kind of button used on our school uniform.”

Sergeant Luo furrowed his brow, making no remark.

“Where did you find this button?”

“Beneath the teacher’s desk.”

‘We checked the scene several times but nobody saw this button. This is so weird.’ Sergeant Luo flicked them a meaningful glance and replied, “We moved the teacher’s desk aside and checked the ground, but none of us saw any buttons there.”
