Chapter 28: Keep an eye on me

If things went bad for Astoria, I expected to be sent to the battlefield right away, but that was not the case. Garen protects and supervises me in my daily activities. According to the Demon King, the Shrine Maiden and the Saint are usually a pair, and when the Shrine Maiden appears, so does the Saint. For the time being, they want to make me the Saint, inform people that the Saint has appeared, and then send me to the battlefield when the true Saint appears.

I’m curious if there’s any way I can inform the Demon Lord of my situation. Fortunately, no one in Astoria knows that I can read and write. They shouldn’t suspect me because I only borrow picture books from the library when I go under Garen’s watchful eye.

I need someone to assist me in writing a letter to the Demon King, but there is no one trustworthy to assist me.

“It’s nothi…”

“What’s the matter, Mika?”

I’m about to say, “nothing,” when a thought strikes me. Why is Garen so fixated on my being the Saint?

“What makes Garen think I should be Saint?”

“Because you’re the Saint, Mika.”

Garen says it slowly, like he’s telling a child. But Garen must be aware. that I am not a Saint. That’s why he abandoned me.

“No, I’m not the Saint. Garen is aware of this.”

I look Garen in the eyes and say. Slowly, the golden eyes blinked.

“What exactly do you mean?”

“Garen told me, “Why aren’t you the Saint?”

“I never… no, maybe, Mika remembers… No, but it’s not like that…”

“I was beheaded—because I wasn’t the Saint, and you know it, Garen.”

“…Mika.”

I think we should have a heart-to-heart talk.

Why did you abandon me, Garen? Why are you interested in me now if you abandoned me? I have so many questions that I don’t know where to begin.

“…I see.”

Garen’s face appeared to be about to cry for some reason.
