This is the initiation of the first meditation. Zen is also called Zhilin, which means the forest of branches. There are five branches in the first meditation: the first branch of enlightenment, the second branch of contemplation, the third branch of joy, the fourth branch of joy, and the fifth branch of mind. These five branches occur in sequence. , get two merits and virtues, one is the virtue of deviance, and the other is the virtue of kindness. "

When it comes to meditation, Daoxuan is immediately elated, but Buddhism and Taoism are different from Taoism. Its basic practice can be seen in various Buddhist scriptures, which are clearly stated and not conservative at all. This is also the reason why Buddhism can be widely spread. Of course, its practice can be made public. However, his magical powers do not appear in Buddhist scriptures, and are secret.

However, Taoist scriptures are often hidden words, and those who do not understand them often feel like falling into a fog. This is also the difference between popular and secret transmission. If there is no teacher and you want to practice, Buddhism is indeed more convenient than Taoism.

In Daoxuan's statement, there are still some concepts that are different from the common world, and they must not be taken literally, but their meaning must be clarified.

Sensation: the feeling of physical contact with the external environment.The perception at this time is the state of mind of the first meditation, not the perception of the desire realm.

Observation: inner observation.The difference between them is: Awareness is the coarser mind of the object; Guan is the finer observation of the mind.

Joy: A feeling of inner joy.Those who have entered the first meditation, for the first time, find that they have entered the first meditation, have left the world of desire, have no troubles in the world of desire, and are very happy in the center of concentration, that is joy.

Happiness: the happiness felt by the five sense organs of the body.Therefore, entering the first jhāna is also called "the joy of detachment", which means that the feeling of liking and happiness arises in the mind of leaving the detachment (desire realm), that is, the detachment of detachment. When you reach the level of the first jhāna, you can taste the happiness of the first jhāna. Only then did I know that it is not a loss to become a monk.

One mind: The mind remains motionless in a still state.Yixin is also translated as 'one-pointed mind'.

"Then what kind of state is the second Zen, how to enter the second Zen heaven from the first Zen?" Mo Xian asked again.

Daoxuan practiced to the second meditation, and there is complete evidence. He went on to say: "When a person enters the first meditation and continues to practice, he will find that the mind of awareness and insight is very rough. The so-called 'consciousness' is the feeling of objects; "Visuality" is all kinds of thoughts. If you want to enter the second jhana, you must abandon all kinds of happiness in the first jhana, and get bored with the first jhana, then you can enter the second jhana. And the mind is tired, from the awareness without contemplation to the non-awareness without contemplation, the second jhana has four branches, the inner pure branch, the joy branch, the joy branch and the one mind branch, which produce three kinds of merit, namely, the virtue of detachment, the virtue of goodness and Believe and respect."

Daoxuan also said to explain various phenomena in meditation in detail. Since Daoxuan has only reached the second meditation, he has no personal experience in the third meditation, the fourth meditation, and the four colorless meditations, so he does not speak auspiciously.

Mo Xian compared Daoxuan's experience with his own, but he knew that these two systems appeared similar on the surface, but fundamentally different. There is also Qi, an invisible and substanceless substance.

In Buddhism, it is believed that this is form, and what Buddhism pursues is to completely annihilate everything, and only Tathagata consciousness is the root.

In Mo Xian's practice, he started from himself, and he didn't find that he was bored, but unconsciously, he entered the next level, and each level had different effects.

What is the difference between these two systems? Mo Xian wanted to get to the bottom of it, but because of his lack of cultivation, he couldn't get to the bottom of it. He would not give up the practice of Huang Ting Dao. After all, it was his foundation, but he would not be conservative. Stones from other mountains can be used to attack jade. In a word, he has no views of Taoism or Buddhism.
