Chapter 3 Entering the County

Mrs. Li's little moves were clearly seen by Mrs. Zhang. She squinted her eyes and thought that the second daughter-in-law was fine in other aspects, but she was too careless. Fortunately, the second son could suppress her, so she didn't care too much. .

After the tea ceremony and acknowledgment were over, Zhou Ran and Ye Ximing returned to the room.

The door to the room was closed, and Ye Ximing looked at Zhou Ran, "Don't take my mother's words to heart. If you really don't want to stay in the Ye family, you can tell me the truth, and I can give you and Li Shu right now to let you leave."

Zhou Ran shook her head. If she wanted to leave, she couldn't leave now.

"Didn't we agree on this last night? You should keep He Lishu for now."

Ye Ximing stared at Zhou Ran quietly for a while before nodding, "If you want to leave, tell me at any time."

"Okay." Zhou Ran responded, and then talked about another plan of his, "I want to go to the county town tomorrow."

Ye Ximing frowned slightly, but soon relaxed, "Mom should go to the county town tomorrow. I'll talk to my mother later and ask her to take you with her."

Zhou Ran smiled and thanked her, then took out the purse that Father Ye and Mrs. Zhang had just given to her, and handed it to Ye Ximing, "Here."

Ye Ximing glanced at it and said calmly: "Since it's for you, just keep it."

Zhou Ran rolled her eyes and said, "Then I won't be polite."

She is penniless now, so she will keep this purse for now, and will return it when she leaves the Ye family in the future.

The two of them were speechless after that. Ye Ximing was sitting on the bed reading a book, coughing from time to time, while Zhou Ran was reading her "Encyclopedia of Elementary Embroidery Techniques" at the table.

Ye Ximing was slightly surprised for a moment when he saw Zhou Ran reading, but he didn't ask any more questions.

The two of them got along quite harmoniously this day.

In the evening, Ye Ximing told Zhou Ran that he had agreed with Zhang that they would go to the county town together tomorrow.

Thinking about this, Zhou Ran woke up early the next day and lay on the bed for a while. When she heard someone moving outside, she got out of bed quietly, washed and tidied herself up, and followed the movement to the kitchen.

In the kitchen, Mrs. Chen and Ms. Li were just about to start working.

Seeing Zhou Ran, Mrs. Chen smiled and said hello, "Why did the third brother and sister get up so early today?"

Zhou Ran didn't get up until that time yesterday. She thought she was lazy, but she was wrong.

"I got up when I couldn't sleep." Zhou Ran smiled and rolled up her sleeves to help with the work.

Ye Erlang set up a stall in the town to sell steamed buns. The women of the Ye family had to get up early every day to steam the steamed buns. The first two days were because Ye Ximing got married, so they took two days off.

Li looked at Zhou Ran who was working with her head down, rolled her eyes, and asked, "Third younger brother and sister, what did your father and mother put in the purse they gave you yesterday?"

"It should be the same as what my parents gave to my two sisters-in-law."

The purse Father Ye gave to Zhou Ran contained two hundred coins, and the purse Zhang gave her contained a pair of small silver earrings. She felt that since Father Ye and the others gave it to her in front of Mrs. Chen and Mr. Li, they would definitely not treat her differently.

Ms. Li wanted to continue asking, but Ms. Zhang and Ms. Ye Xiaomei walked in, so Ms. Li had to stop talking.

Mrs. Zhang saw a look of satisfaction on her face when she saw Zhou Ran helping in the kitchen. She was not lazy.

Several people worked together, and the buns were quickly served. After the buns were steamed and Ye Erlang drove the donkey cart away, the Ye family began to prepare for breakfast.

After breakfast, Ms. Zhang went back to her room, changed into better clothes, and came out to call Zhou Ran.

Zhou Ran, who was helping clean up in the kitchen, came out and said, "Mom, are we leaving now?"

"Yeah." Mrs. Zhang responded. "Mom, please wait a moment." Zhou Ran went back to the room to wash her hands, tidy up her hair and clothes, and soon came out and said to Mrs. Zhang, "Mom, let's go."

Zhang's eyes turned around Zhou Ran, "Is this what you're wearing?"

Zhou Ran said a little embarrassedly: "Mom, these are already my best clothes."

Mrs. Zhang frowned when she heard this, but said nothing more. She took Zhou Ran out of the yard and walked to the entrance of the village.

There were already several women and children on the oxcart at the entrance of the village who were going to the county town.

Mrs. Zhang greeted the owner of the bullock cart, Old Man Liu, and got on the bullock cart first.

Zhou Ran climbed onto the bullock cart and sat next to Zhang.

A woman in the car, about thirty-five years old, wearing a silver hairpin and a maroon dress, looked at Zhou Ran twice, then turned to ask Ms. Zhang: "Is this your third wife?"

Zhang nodded lightly.

The woman curled her lips and said, "It's not that bad. I thought you were going to marry your San Lang to some kind of fairy."

Mrs. Zhang glanced at the woman and said, neither salty nor coldly: "Although he is not a fairy, he is still better than that mean, lazy, unreasonable person."

When the woman heard this, she glared at Ms. Zhang fiercely, "Ms. Zhang, what do you mean?"

Zhou Ran's lips curled up slightly, and she said curiously: "Auntie, my mother didn't mention her by name, why are you so excited? Could it be that that mean, lazy, and unreasonable person is someone from your family?"

Someone in the car couldn't help but burst out laughing after hearing Zhou Ran's words.

The woman became angry and said, "So what if you have sharp teeth and a sharp mouth? You are not destined to be a widow!"

Zhou Ran's face turned cold, and just as she was about to get angry, Mrs. Zhang had already raised her hand and slapped the person, "Mr. Ma, say one more thing, and see if I don't tear your mouth apart."

The other people in the car reacted and quickly pulled Zhang away and advised: "Okay, okay, we are all from the same village, don't hurt the harmony."

"Yes, yes, Aunt Ma, you are so talkative, please stop saying a few words!"

Madam Ma was angry and guilty, covering her face and muttering in a low voice: "I just said it casually."

"You can eat randomly, but you can't talk nonsense." Zhou Ran glared at Madam Ma coldly, then turned to comfort Madam Zhang.

Mrs. Zhang's face softened a lot when she faced Zhou Ran, she shook her head and said, "I'm fine."

After what happened just now, the bullock cart became quiet for a while, and even the children were silent.

It wasn't until the sun gradually rose and the city gate of Nanxing County appeared in front of everyone's eyes that the children in the car became chattering and excited again.

The bullock cart stopped on the main street of the county town. Zhou Ran got off the bullock cart and looked at the county town while moving her stiff body.

The streets are paved with bluestones, lined with shops, and pedestrians come and go. Occasionally, a gorgeous carriage passes through the middle of the street, and the pedestrians on the street give way.

After Zhang and Old Man Liu agreed on a time to return, they first went to Ping'an Tang on North Street, got medicine for Ye Ximing and bought ginseng tablets, which cost more than eight taels of silver.

Dr. Luo, who treated Ye Ximing before at Pingan Tang, said that if Ye Ximing's body was nourished with precious medicinal materials such as ginseng, he could live for two more years.

Although the Ye family has some wealth, they are just farmers after all. They cannot afford good ginseng and can only buy some second-rate ginseng slices. But even so, in a few months, the Ye family’s savings over the years have been exhausted. Almost bottomed out.
