The first to fifth levels mainly punish sins of lust. The second level is the Sword Tree Hell, where sinners are forced to climb trees with swords hanging on them and experience the pain of being pierced by the sword's blade. Penalties in the third to fifth tiers are more brutal, reflecting the harsher punishment for sexual crimes.

The sixth to ninth levels deal with crimes of killing and harming life. In these levels, sinners would be tortured by being bitten by wild beasts and poured with boiling molten iron. The tenth to thirteenth floors are dedicated to theft and fraud, and the sinners will be punished by having their bodies sawed open and crushed.

The fourteenth to eighteenth levels are the most severe hells, usually used to punish souls who have committed extremely serious sins, such as murdering parents, bleeding the Buddha's body (harming the Buddha) and other serious crimes. In these levels, sinners endure not only extreme physical pain but also prolonged mental torture.
