Every worker who welds Invar steel has to pass the examination and certification of the French GTT company before he can start work.

Just to train an Invar steel welder requires several 10 yuan.

Moreover, patent royalties have to be paid to the French GTT company, ranging from several million dollars to tens of millions of dollars each.

What Dongsheng Heavy Industry is doing now is to bypass these obstacles.

Using manganese instead of nickel, high manganese steel also has good low temperature resistance.

At present, the world's proven manganese reserves are more than ten times that of nickel. Even with Yang Dongsheng's ability, the manganese discovered over the years has basically maintained this ratio.

Therefore, in terms of price, manganese is usually less than one-tenth of nickel.

However, high manganese steel was only used for low-temperature containers at relatively high temperatures, such as liquid ammonia, propane, and propylene. The operating temperature is generally above minus 70 degrees. In order to improve material properties, nickel is often added.

After many experiments, Dongsheng Heavy Industry finally conquered this technology.

The austenitic high manganese steel plate containing 24% manganese still has good toughness at minus 200 degrees.

In this process, Dongsheng Heavy Industry has overcome the low thermal conductivity of high manganese steel, the difficulty of alloying molten steel, and the easy leakage during continuous casting.

During the processing, the surface layer of the steel plate is easy to harden, the cutting temperature is high, chip breaking is difficult, the tool is easy to wrap, the workpiece is damaged, and the processing accuracy is not easy to guarantee, etc. A series of problems.

In this way, high manganese steel can be used to store lower temperature raw materials such as liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, LNG, ethane, and ethylene.

Compared with 9% nickel steel, high manganese steel still has many problems.

For example, high manganese steel has a face-centered cubic crystal structure. Such structural characteristics lead to low yield strength of high manganese steel, usually only 200 to 400 MPa.

Coupled with other deficiencies, the result is that the low-temperature container using high manganese steel is not large, usually only a few hundred cubic meters.

In contrast, the yield strength of 9% nickel steel is usually above 560 MPa.

Large LNG storage tanks and LNG carriers made of 9% nickel steel can be 10,000+ cubic meters, or even 10,000+ cubic meters.
